Alot of girl drummers have problems with subtlety - they only have one level of stick volume. It's like a painter who paints with light to dark strokes to simulate shadow and depth - the same must be applied to drums (velocity). Try hitting the snare as soft as you can then as loud as you can.... play with the levels in between to layer your drum sound - add some texture.
