i went to china like 2 months ago, and let me tell sadly that most of people there are fit, here in america we all are used to be fat and sit and watch tv all the time and they dont, they work out and have better foods, kind of weird ones. Also, if you try to be optimistic... the girl may have been insulted so very deeply, but the fact that her voice was chosen out of the hundreds of girls that may have auditioned is quite a compliment too. The truth is that people would have judged her because of her looks, and I can say with confidence that people would make fun of her looks if she showed up on TV in front of the world. Anyways, with a voice like hers she'll be motivated to improve her image and she'll make it big :))

Check the Singapore papers, please. Every single one of them in the month of August. And I should know because I'm Chinese and I was in China for the Beijing Olympics.

I only knew of it when my parents got the Singapore papers delivered daily to China. I tried accessing many different news websites from the internet in China, and many of the websites were blocked. It was way after the opening ceremony before even the "more literate, urban Chinese" knew about it.

I agree that this version of the song sounds identical to the music video version; but a live recording of a performance at such a populated event wouldn't be so pleasant to listen to with the crowds cheering at the top of their lungs :P Still, beautiful song, and I can enjoy the atmosphere of the live performance while getting the sound quality of a recording.

To answer your question, it is obviously harsh to anyone as long as they stand from the young girl's point of view.

I think that the song itself is not as important(it's a great song!) as understanding and taking in some of their(the singers) body language.
