Yes sir, Bill did a good number of downstrokes, giving his music that aggressive and sometimes bluesy sound. Good playing, hadn't heard that break in quite some time!
I find downstrokes very difficult at speed but you're right, it does rock it along. I notice a lot of players don't use downstrokes at all even when playing tunes like Bluegrass Stomp! Doesn't quite sound right.
A///A///D///D/// A///A///E///E/// A///A///D///D/// A///E///A///A/// I hate to see that sun sink low Just for a cause you ought to know For it's true love I can't forget All my sorrow you'll soon regret There's dishes to wash and a house to clean There's washing to do, oh it seems so mean There's millions of words I can't explain Think of this girl before you change your name. Bill Monroe
Bill Monroe was all about the downstrokes!
Whom do you think Chuck Berry learned from??

Right...it's easier to play it alternating upstroke-downstroke, but it doesn't give the song that Monroe feel :-)
