  • Diana had it all! She is among the few singers who could completely enthrall.

  • when hear a symphony

  • Diana forgot the lyrics in the beginning of the song.

  • I can really see why berry put diana out in front, truly magical voice.

  • sweet tune :)

  • Florence and Mary create beautiful harmony . . . Miss Ross can sing and is supreme eye candy that tastes Diana-mite!

  • Give me a break Carolina, you've been a Catty Little Diva wanna be on dozens of Diana Sites, putting the Lead Singer Down, does not elevate the Background Singers, no matter whay Miss Mary tells you

  • been listening to these voices for 40 years, ( my first musical obsession started with the supremes @ the age of 8 ) if you ask me, this performance is one of the best i've seen. they nailed the vocals from the radio track completely live, including at least 5 key changes, while the slight misstep at the beginning proves the unshakable level of professionalism the supremes already developed early in their career.

  • Even with the slight miscue on opening verse, I still like it better than the studio version. Diana caresses the vocal here into a hush that borders on lullaby. Not many singers can pull that off. Great stuff.

  • She's screws up the beginning, Mary give her a nasty side-eye...

  • I've always loved the music these ladies sang. Don't know anything about their trials and tribulations. I was young and didn't understand that stuff. I just soaked the music in all the way to "Upside Down."

  • My my my my...Flo had such a powerful voice. I have listened to many of their live performances and she seems to consistently over shadow what i call Dina Ross flat voice (in comparison). Motown (Berry Gordon) should have let voice run free and let he take lead.

Florence should have left the group a lot earlier while she still had the strong will. Instead, her heart was weakened with all the drama that often found her on the loosing end.

    R.I.P- Florence Ballard.

  • I've always loved these ladies and there music, incredible. ---- guess i am not your average white boy---- they were GREAT

  • These times must have been awesome.. sad I'm too young to actually judge that. I know this kind of hairstyle from Star Trek, too.

  • I know I am wrong for this, but I LOVE that she messes up the lines... she is not perfect after all. What I do give her credit for is keeping her composure, you can see in her face when she remembers the correct lyrics a look of relief. Also if you pay attetion, Mary Wilson doesn't react to the flub at all... they were classy ladies all the way

  • Really carolinaguy, You actually have to Stoop to Imaginary Plots & Conversations, just to Hurl an Insult @ Diana Ross?, Why not "Grow a Pair" & just say you don't Like her, but you like the Music she created?, Isn't that just a Little More Honest

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear that was a juvinile response. I just noticed Diana was disoriented, and mary looked angry, and given the girls conflicts around this time, it is conceiveable, their was a disagreement backstage. Since I spent for 94.00 to see Miss Ross back in March, I wouldn't say I hate her. I know how to seperate the art from the artist.

  • Its bad when the background out-sings the lead, especially on such a simple song. Flo is tough!

Lady Di was a bit shaken up in the beginning. Mary glared at her before the performance. Fight backstage. Gordy must not have been there to protect Lady Di because Flo is having so much fun in this performance; she must have shut up and shaken up the Diva

  • I sing this song so loud that it startles my dogs

  • flo looks soe unhappy in this clip..r.i.p..ms.ballard!!

  • that line "these tears that fill my eyes, I cry not for myself but for all those who never felt the joy we felt", I thought was so pretentious.

NOW I GET IT! I understand that feeling.

  • I LOVE this clip. Diana flubs the lyric right from the start yet she works it out beautifully. Both Flo and Mary sound and look gorgeous as always. For me, the mistake makes this all the more precious. Simply wonderful. Thanks for posting this.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • I love this version because you can really hear Flo singing almost Angelic. Just wonderful!

  • Detroit is always eternally blessed with the esoteric melody of real class. It shall never fade.

  • @DetroitLove4U Go Texas!

  • To me, Diana Ross has the best singing voice, ever.

  • And this was before all this auto tune bullshit. We need to bring back REAL TALENT.

  • i think diana is one of the most beautiful women i've evev seen

  • Gorgeous Diana :)

  • 10 people don't know real music.

  • If I'm not mistaken, This is the original video to this song..

Great music, great lyrics and great interpretation of the Pura Diva... Mrs. Diana Ross....

  • diva ross kill the song she was the first lady of motown and allways will be hands down

  • 10 people have never heard a symphony

  • gosh they are so, so young and beautiful. talent like that comes along very rarely.

thanks for the post. Diana was born to live on stage.

    awesomessss!!!

  • does she make a mistake at the beginning?

it supposed to start with : you giving me a true love, right?

  • @frankyage

yes, but i think she kept it together and recovered well. did you see Mary's face? "uh-oh". lol.

  • @msgeorgiabama haha, okay, thought so!

  • @frankyage actually there are several versions of the saong, if you have any of the unreleased cds they have many alternate takes with diferent lyrics, its lucky that it was done live so she could create any words she needed.

  • @etrax2000 do you know where these unreleashed cd's are available ? yes i love this version !

  • @frankyage EBAY HAS everything. They are caled UNRELEASED masters, MOTOWN NUMBER 1's and a variety others. Some of the better ones have vocal only tracks and others have different instramentals without bass and some without the strings. and others have different lyrics and stereo mixes when the originals were only released as mono with a faded blend of the background vocals.

  • @frankyage most have already ben uploaded ..try CELEBRITYLOVE' I HEAR A SYMPHONY" THE SUPREMES STEREO MIX

  • I LOVE MOWTOWN MUSIC, I LOVE NORTHERTN SOUL MUSIC. I ALSO LOVE THE HAIR AND THE CLOTHES OF THAT ERA.

  • I love the hair style of that time

  • love motown tunes, I could dance around all day to this. I dont know how anone could not like it

  • i love dianna and the supremes!!!!!!!!! Great best soul

  • To all my fellow vets these songs made it easy to get through that hell in the jungle. Lets all lift a drink to our buddies that we left behind but never forgotten!

  • This song reminds me of a love supreme.

  • You know at the 07 Kennedy Center Honors Diane heard a symphony sitting next to her crush Brian Wilson

  • We Still have Diana, Praise the Lord!, and, well?, We're kinda Stuck with Mary I guess

  • @TheReturnOfBigBear you mean Mary stuck with you. Her name is Mary, that is a sacred Name. Respect her and the fact she was the stabilizing force of the Supremes.

  • Sion6 right on.

  • God Bless you Beloved Florence, you left us much to soon...RIp you wont be forgotten

  • RonaldMcDonaldmartin asshole,for ones,I must agree

  • This was the best.....

  • this video is about the supremes! no mariah or madonna, if you want to talk about thoses Bitches go the their vdeos.

This is all about the Supremes Thank You!

  • Gorgeous Diana

  • Did anyone notice Florence looking right pissed at the beginning? Her expression seems to say "I do not want to be on this damn stage with these two bitches!". O_o

  • @Sion6 Florence was a very gifted singer. She could have really made a career for herself if she had the knowledge, money, and discipline. Maybe she wouldn't have had the mainstream success Diana did, but her voice stretched from opera to soulful blues. Even Diana wrote in her book that Florence could have had one hell of a solo career in the opera field had she been in a different place in life.

  • @wayydowneast So very true. I'm glad that someone finally pointed out Ross writing that because so many don't want to admit it. I think she would have been a great blues/soul singer, maybe like a female Al Green under the correct tutelage, management, and a record company like Stax or Atlantic.

  • ahh so classy!.. great song.

  • LOL@you people arguing over stuff that happened in the 1950s and '60s, before you guys were even born. It's in the past! Move on, and just enjoy the music!

  • @Sion6 Amen brother!

  • @Sion6 lollll..i noe isn't that tha truth..stunning!!

  • @Sion6 Thank you!!!!!

  • @bigbear39ca Horny looking? Lol.

  • Sing it, Diana (and those backup singers, lol)! One of the original divas!

  • @bigbear39ca when am i gonna get some of ur poundin?

  • @bigbear39ca mary's the weakest? diana can't even remember the lyrics to the song! YIKES how unprofessional of her! i bet she clinched really hard after the show while she got pounded with a hot rod for her mistake after the show.

  • @bigbear39ca I wish she would have opened them for me!!!

  • @dmillsify You should have taken a number and waited your turn!

  • @TheMotownManiac seems so simple in hindsight! Good advice, thanks!

  • A 1000 violins fill the air!!!

  • Does anyone else catch that Diana messed up the opening lines? This was the 1st tine they performed this song live

  • @tummielvr yes, I did, but being the professional she was, she recovered just fine!!!! I love those women!!!

  • Amazing background vocals by Mary and Flo... they almost drown out Diana Ross. They were all so young and you can clearly see that Mary and Flo were nice looking girls.I think Diana was too skinny and akward looking at this stage. She also had this habit of hunching here shoulders during every performance.

  • Where Did Our Love Go Part II maybe?

  • Its ashame black female performers had to use wigs back in the 60's. I understand wigs were in at that time but to have to wear wigs for every performance in the 60's...I just can't understand how they handled it, especially in the summer time. lol

  • There's nothing wrong with being in love with "being in love"

  • @carolinaguy321 Diana had two #1 hits between 1970 and 1973, "Ain't No Mountain" and "Touch Me in the Morning", plus a #1 movie, "Lady Sings the Blues" in 1972 and an Oscar nom. "Reach Out and Touch" and "Remember Me" were both Top 20 hits. Diana's career may have not picked up til "The Boss" did she did have hits from 70 to 73. The 70's Supremes only managed five Top 20 hits in seven years

  • This music melts my Heart...

  • I just love diana . She to me shows love and pasion trough out all the performence's . Always a smile from here to Morocco and a unique and bright voice that can never be duplicated she is legend . I love her

  • @bigbear39ca WELL DAMN HOW MONEY DO SHE HAVE KNOW IT ALL

  • Anyone who knows this songs knows that Diana royally screwed up during this performance! haha. She forgot words all the way through!

  • @glendalerhythm SO WHAT SHE CA DO THAT,PLUS SHE SOUNDS GOOD

  • @glendalerhythm So? Lets see you sing a new song for the first time on television. She handled it like a lady.

  • If there was no Flo the Supremes never would had happened. Mary and Flo put Diana in the Supremes.

  • @HairH2O good point. diana was damn lucky and fortunate to have been invited into the group back in 1959. she owes flo everything.

  • @dmustard11 I am glad that someone else recognses that Flo and Mary inviited Diana into the group, and whether or hot she is talented, she more than likely wouldn't have been a star without those two

  • @tummielvr actually Flo invited Mary into the group, but Paul Williams invited Diana into the group after hearing her sing with some friends. After which Paul brought in Betty McGlown. Milton Jenkins initially asked Maxine Ballard to join the Primettes but after declining she told him that Flo could sing. This is found in Peter Benjaminson's book "The Lost Supreme" based on 8 hours of interviews with Flo in 1975.

  • @HairH2O Doesn't matter. That voice, she'd have made it anyway. The road might have changed a bit, though. Once Berry found her, it was a matter of time. Other managers would have put her out front as well. She is, well, the defining female voice of pop music; what, 30 hits (and how many made it to the top)? Who else has that? No female artists do. None. Spice girls sold 70 mil albums, to every single little girl in the world. Mariah, Celine, Madonna, none match the charting queen: Miss Ross.

  • @nitestar95 Cher has placed a song at number 1 for four decades in a row, Miss Ross has not. I don't care for either, just saying. They each have their own fan following. Black Gays: Diana. White Gays: Cher..

  • @nitestar95 Mariah has 18 #1 hits ALL BY HERSELF, along with 6 #1 albums. Let's add to that 8 other top 5 hits, 5 Grammy Awards and 120M RIAA certified sales, and she is still full steam ahead at 41. So, just drop Mariah's name off of your little list. Maybe THEN Diana was the most successful, but now Mariah is. You may have to take Madonna off too, because she took Diana's place in the Guinness record book as most successful female artist.

  • @terrybigteekemp preach it baby!

  • @terrybigteekemp I know Mariah is a great singer... but for the life of me I can't think of more than 2 hits by her. We will see if they stand the test of time.

  • Flo's daughter's need to listen to "Bishop TD Jakes - The Spellbreaker 1" Someone cleary was trying to stop their mother and trying to keep them down. They need to put a stop to it si that the next genoration will be successful.

You do not find it funny how She never introduced everyone to Flu's daughters on Oprah since their mother's movie is coming out in the summer. But instead puched her own kids. Not a hater and will always be a fan of Diana but you need to stop speaking fowl on Mary.

  • @bigbear39ca No offence to miss ross but I heard Liz Taylor stayed away from her also? That is what I read. I do not know if it was gossip. So you have two different people from different walks of life saying the same thing.

  • @SmootherCurls Just wondered if you could enlighten us as to why (allegedly) Liz Taylor stayed away from Diana? Or just more b/s hearsay? And why would the money Mary took from Diana be guilt money when it saved Mary from losing her home? Diana had NO obligation to hand the money over. Diana was caught drink-driving? GOSH! Shock..horror! So what? No one you know ever got caught doing that? Its not legal, but doesnt mean everyday people dont do that. Just shows she's as vulnerable as the next..

  • @SmootherCurls U say that mary stays away from Diana. How do u KNOW its that way around and not that Diana stays away from mary?THATS more likely..until mary needs Dianas financial support again anyway!Ever wondered why (if miss mary is so wonderful) the likes of Oprah stays away from mary?

As for Tammi, well no 1 will EVER forget that wonderful lady and Diana singing 1 of her songs will never make any1 do so!I dont understand ur point on that 1 at all.Diana remade a LOT of songs back in the day

  • @bigbear39ca I do not know if you should defend so quick. How do you know that money she gave was guilt money? I notice Mary stays away from her. All those things makes you wonder what really happened? And did you hear how she sang Tammi Terrill song after she was gone and no one was remembering Tammi things like this makes me wonder. I do not know miss ross and is a fan. Diana Ross was caught drinking and driving. Just because someone stays close to does not mean they are straight forward.

  • this "bigbear39ca" i have notice has left bad comments on Mary Wilson on nearly all Mary Wilson's video's and also Mary in The Supremes videos , Was just wondering why he feels so jealous of Mary Wilson to spend so much time typing cheap shots.

  • if american idol was in their day, their would be no competion, the would win hands down.

  • @bigbear39ca Diane Ross was 1 of 10 PRIMETTES/ SUPREMES, thanks to the writing/production team of HOLLAND/DOZIER/HOLLAND sang lead on the first five unprecedented consecutive #1 that followed. Now, her behind the curtains sexual relations with Motown boss Berry Gordy who followed what is call "the formula" in Pop music at the same time satisfying Diane's ambition made him more than willing to stifle the others (Flo, Mary, Cindy) creating the frictions that followed and the monster she became!

  • Comment removed

  • @bigbear39ca yes, you're right on that one. but the original group was a good mix, as time went on the other 2 were overshadowed by the magnitude of diana's persona.

  • should be he (marivn) never reached 1/10 of her (diana's) success. yeh he was trash and everyone knew it.

  • the best song from the Wonderful supremes love them forevera

  • I'll sidestep the drama about Diana and Flo. I'll just hope my heaven is being in a place like America in soulsville, being 21 forever and living in the happy spaces in those times in those communities from I'd say 1960 till 1972. The music was great then.

  • It's the best song ever!

  • for all the people who keep saying diana screwed up the beginning. Couldnt it possible be as an artist that she may have wanted as different interpretation than the original version????? As an artist myself I know I would; you get tired of the same ol' same ol' over and over. she never missed a beat was always on point so all the diana haters if you had a creative bone; you'd get it.

  • Scout Taylor Compton linked me on Twitter.

  • Flo looks particularly pretty in this video, they all do, but Flo stands out here. Diana messed up in the beginning though lol, wrong words, but she did a good job in the end and has such great charisma. I love all three ladies. All are talented, unique and special in their own way.

  • pretty bad live...

  • I wish that the One Woman wanted from Some Home Planet EARTH...would have the Spirit to Best Represent Herself knowing that it's SUICIDE! to walk alone by herself!.....Diana Ross Absolutely Yea!...Queen Supreme!

  • love it xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Diana Ross is beautiful. You can feel the music.

  • Diana had the look of terror in her eyes at first, then at .29-.31 she was like "O DAMN NOW I REMEMBER"...comical but very professional. Most of these so called artist today would have freaked! Once again i love the way Flo went to church at the end ...

  • I love Diana but was she drunk or something cause she started off so wrong!!!

  • Diana Ross sure could sing

  • carolinaguy, did you forget about aint no mountain high enough going to no 1 ??

  • I don't like this version as much as others. I LOVE the supremes!!!

  • The people who disliked this don't hear a symphony :(

  • very sexy voice I love it

  • How about a word or two for Holland-Dozier-Holland? Without whose genius there would have been no music like this........

  • She was a crook and a thief like her master and Motown pimp Berry Gordy !!!

  • She was Berry Gordy's peace and flunky, they both destroyed Florence Ballard. The late Petey Green called him right " a musical pimp and thief "

  • @patreadwell please no one can destroy you unless you let them. flo was a fat lazy drunk who sabotaged her own career. diane was bright, talented and ambitious, don't fault her for using what the good lord gave her to use. it paid off.

  • @whatigot2say Diana is a snake and a drunk. That"s the reason when she had the nerve to show up at Flo's funeral the people of Detroit spit on her. But her and Barry Gordy will both get their just dessert the moment they quit breathing. Diana Ross is a wash up drunk and everybody that was formerly associated with Motown knows it. And even when she recorded an album with Marvin Gaye he had to be brought into the studio at a different time because they didn't get along and he called her a B

  • @patreadwell diane may be a runk but unlike flo she wasn't a fat lazy drunk content to live in the housing projects and collect a welfare check. flo was responsible for her own demise just as diane was responsible for her rise to superstardom. yes berry gordy is a low life but so were a lot of record company owners. marvin was a low life doper not fit to be in the same room with diane & she let him know it. he was scum that's why his daddy killed his doped up ass.

  • @whatigot2say Get a life, how dare you! Flo was never fat and you don't know the hell that Flo went through. You need to respect Flo and Marvin they are no here to take up for themselves and what kind of person is happy that a father kills his own son. It seem like to me the scum don't fall too far where you stand!

  • @tevtev92 then don't criticize diane for wanting more out of life than a welfare check, and a husband from the housing projects (Flo) Marvin was a known doper & that's why diane refused to record the album in person with him because she was pregnant and wasn't going to have her unborn child inhaling the weed he was smoking in order to sing. he was a loser now he's a dead loser.

  • @whatigot2say Flo wanted more out of life than a welfare check, Flo dealt with alot demons that layed dormant inside of her and ultimately they got the best of her. Marvin was a flawed man indeed, as was Flo and yes Diana was too flawed. I don't care how much he smoked, he didn't deserve to die by the hands of his father.

  • @tevtev92 well then it was a sad state of affairs for all of them.

  • @whatigot2say Yes, Florence and Marvin had there problems. But saying that Florence was fat and lazy, and was quite happy collecting welfare is a down right lie. She wasn't the best for her children. She didn't want to collect welfare, but seeing as motown had made it so difficult for record company's to promote her, no one would touch her. Marvin, well he's just 1000 times better than Diana Ross could ever hope to be, dead or alive.

  • @RedRoosterRoad flo was mediocre at best, there was nothing distinct about flo, there were a million flo's running around the industry. thus her career/life went know where. she should have been content to be diana's backup singer like Mary was. Not sure why you'd compare a male singer (Marvin) to a female (diana) one thing is certain she never reached 1/10 of her success. She's in the record books not him. he was a drugged out loser with a nice voice his entire career. he was trash.

  • @whatigot2say Florence was not mediocre. Her voice had distinctive high notes and brassy low notes. Diana was stuck in the middle with a sort of nasal soprano. She wasn't content to be her back ground singer because she knew they should have been a group. She wasn't just gonna stand there and be walked all over. Marvin Gaye was not a "Drugged out" looser his entire career. He made some fantastic music. Something which you fail to realise.

  • @RedRoosterRoad Flo sounded liked a million other singers at the time. diana's voice was beautiful as demonstrated here, that nasal descriptive is a rewrite of history. her voice was & is still one of the most recognizable voices of all time, no one can duplicate her voice although there are ton's of flo's out there. yes marvin made good music but was too stupid to get his life together or to keep any of his earnings. that i call a loser. DR never had that problem.

  • @whatigot2say "& is still one of the most recognizable voices of all time" no it isn't. It has deteriorated over time and sounds nothing like it did. I don't deny that it is her voice i hear on the records though. And yes compared to Mary and Florence her voice was different. It sounded as if she was white rather than black. Florence had a distinctive voice as she had a lot of power at the top of the scale. She was able to sing high note effortlessly.

  • @RedRoosterRoad "loud" as in flo's case doesn't mean better, diana's tone was much prettier than flo's thus she sold countless millions of records because of it. & yes her voice doesn't sound like it did when she was in her 20's but what 67 yr old woman's voice sounds like it did when they were 24? because diana chose not to sing gospel style like the other blk females of her era doesnt mean she sounded white. she intentionally created her own unique style & apparently she was right.

  • @whatigot2say Yes Florence had a "loud" voice but it was the control she had over it that gave her that special sound. Diana was chosen to sing lead because of her nasal quality. She was chosen because she sounded like a white woman. The Supremes were trying to become successful at a time when it was socially ok to to call black people Niggers.

  • @RedRoosterRoad no diana didn't or wasn't attempting to sound like a white woman. & I got news for u "nasal" quality isn't a desireable trait & doesn't sell records, but a beautiful tone does, diana had one and it sold millions of them for her. she refused to be put in the "black girl" mold and developed her own style and sound. she's an original flo wasn't. flo was a dime a dozen black girl singer.

  • @whatigot2say I don't think Florence was. She had her own unique soul style. Diana had a pop style. Which, ok wasn't too nasal but had quality's of a white performer. That's just how it was. I don't want you to think that I'm trying to make you angry because i am honestly not, i don't see the point. this is just my personal opinion. I saw an interview on YT with Eddie Holland i think, and he said her voice had nasal quality's.

    .

  • @RedRoosterRoad hey i'm not angry you're just expressing your opinion & as i'm expressing mine, that's what opinion sites are for. :)

  • @whatigot2say Good. Just wanted to make sure :L I don't doubt for a second that Diana Ross played a very big part in making the Supremes a success. I think it was just a combination of the right song, the right singers and the right boss (BG) pushing collectively that got the first number 1.

  • @whatigot2say Are we agreed?

  • @whatigot2say I can agree on one thing you said and that's Diana's voice can't be duplicated, and is very recognizable (I like Diana so don't think I'm putting her down). But, there was definitely not tons of Flo's out there. Flo was an R&B/soul/blues/gospel singer for sure, but with range that very few singers possessed, with control that even fewer possessed. She never had to be loud, or forceful with her voice, singing was just as natural to her as breathing.

  • @terrybigteekemp I agree, I love Flo, she could have had it all,God knows that and Flo never had much chance to connect with God on earth, now in Heaven she is Supreme Angelic!!!!

  • beautiful,..when music was still music!

  • Comment removed

  • one of my many favs by them.

  • this lady can sing, diana ross!

  • She screw'd up! I never noticed it before, probably because I wasn't born when this was taped.

Diana, was the Supremes, plain and simple.

And another thing about Diana that she got away with, her air control during singing performances.

She take in alot of air per note. That's really not great singing. On a recording, we shouldn't hear anything other than the crisp sound of the artist voice, not the heavy grasping for air!

    However, Legendary indeed!!!

  • @mustafahajj I'm not being a jerk but how do you know? Are you a sound engineer? Or just a music fan?

  • @dpnowell

Anyone, with a pair of ears can hear this woman taking in large amounts of air per note.

Yes, I'm currently employed in the music industry and Yes, I am a fan of the "Supremes" as well.

  • @mustafahajj Thank you for your response. I obviously have a pair of ears but I've never noticed that before. Maybe it's something I should listen for in the future. Does the action of improperly breathing in before singing a note have a technical term?

  • @mustafahajj I saw an interview by her and she admitted that.

  • Such a pro she is. They all were.

  • That's raw and authentic

  • what is it about girl groups that turn men so on???

  • Thanks for that Carolina guy very interesting

  • Without question, my alltime fave Supremes clip. Anyone can screw up a song, only a pro of the highest form can cover it as well as Diana does. Love this!

  • Diana's voice is quite unique and very attractive to the ear like silk audio!
