  • shit sport

  • Hi @bdogdj ,

I would like to translate your video to Portuguese(Brazil) if you agree. Would you by any chance have the original file without the text? I would of course credit you or send you the finished video so you can upload it yourself.

  • Mmmmmh still doesn't look like an interesting sport that makes sense to me.

  • did you use anim8er for this?

if not what did you use?

  • @flipmstr2 Yup.

  • So each jam can be up to 4 minutes?

  • @BansyHansy Each jam is up to 2 minutes.

  • i just dont understand WHEN to put you hands on your hips! whenever you want or what?

  • @BansyHansy @BansyHansy When a jammer is the Lead Jammer they can call it off any time they want by tapping their hips. Usually it is done to prevent the OTHER jammer from scoring any points. For example, Jammer A is lead jammer and has just scored 4 points on her second pass through the pack. Jammer B has not yest gotten to the pack on her scoring pass. Jammer A sees this and calls off the jam so that Jammer B can't score any points.

  • @BansyHansy *OR* Jammer A is lead but she fell (or fell behind or whatever) and Jammer B is getting to the pack first and is about to score. Jammer A can call off the jam to prevent her from scoring. In this case neither jammer scores any points for that jam (assuming it is the first scoring pass for both jammers).

  • so if your team gets penatlies and all you blockers go off does that mean the other team can score less/nill points...

  • @BoonieBoon1989 No. you get points for each player in the penalty box, or any player that is "out of play" (20 feet behind or in front of the pack, etc. ) at the time the jammer passes the first opposing player that is in the pack. Also, only 2 blockers can be in the penalty box at a time, so if a third is assesed a penalty that sends her to the penalty box, and there are already 2 blockers in the box, her penalty is delayed until one of them returns to play.

  • @bdogdj Ahh that makes sence, thanks :D

  • Awesome! I'm going to be trying derby for the first time soon, and I want to brush up on the basics first. Thank you!

  • cool! thank you

  • Thanks for the rundown! I just joined as a new ref >:D

  • I'm a fresh meat ref in training!!!

  • As the number of people I knew who were involved in roller derby continued to grow...the need to find out how the game worked grew as well. This explained everything very well! Big kudos to whoever put the time into making the animation. A clean visual aid works great.

  • A AWESOME GAME!!! thanks FOR THE EXPLANATION!!!

  • @irishmakbeth- a bit light to be a sport? Are you kidding me? Apparently you've never seen a derby team in action.....we "derby chics" always have battle scars....and their not usually small either!!!

  • I'm hoping to join a team as soon as I get the hang of skating again. Unfortunately, the local rink is only open Friday's & Saturday's so it'll take awhile...):

  • So the blockers can never pass the pivots right?

  • @kastar2209 The pivots and blockers can be anywhere as long as they are a part of the pack. The pack is defined as the largest group of skaters, with skaters from both teams, skating within proximity (10 feet) of each other...or something like that...I havent read the most recent rule set. Other blockers must start a jam behind the pivot only if the pivot is lined up on the start line. After the jam starts pivots and blockers may move freely within the pack.

  • At what age can you join roller derby or is it different for the state? I think this looks awesome & would love to join! :D

  • @kastar2209 have you found out the age yet

  • @amanda12363 No I havent. I went to look it up but came up with nothing :/

  • @kastar2209 The age to join varies leagues. Usually over 18 but some leagues restrict it to 21 and up. Contact your local league for recruiting information.

  • @kastar2209 The age to join varies leagues. Usually over 18 but some leagues restrict it to 21 and up. Contact your local league for recruiting information.

  • Youth roller derby for the win! I'm 13 and joining next year >:D

  • I loved to watch roller derby back in the '80's. I wish there was somewhere close I could see it live. Thanks for the video.

  • @SpringCityMotorsport Where do you live? With over 250 teams in the US alone the chances are pretty good there is a team playing near you.

  • @bdogdj

I live in Tennessee about 2 hours east of Nashville. Probably something in Atlanta, about 5 hours away. I think I will check into that. Thanks.

  • @SpringCityMotorsport Nashville has an excellent team. The Nashville Rollergirls. You should check them out!

  • @SpringCityMotorsport There are teams in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Johnson City. Maybe those are closer to you than Nashville? All four teams are very awesome teams! I have been to each of their bouts, and it was time well spent. :-)

  • @kategirl137

Thanks, I'm right about in the center, so I have been looking at all of the schedules. Found some good pictures and videos of the teams and can't wait to get there.

  • 3:52 Whoahohoho! That's gotta hurt!

  • Do you have to use those specific skates ? Because I have inline skates.

  • @iluvmusik145 Only quad skates are allowed for WFTDA, and as far as I know, there aren't any current inline roller derby leagues (they tried something like it on inlines in the early 90's, I believe, but it didn't last long.) Referees may wear inline skates if they wish.

  • Is this a real sport? i only just heard about it recently and this is the first video that had any real information about it :)

Seems a bit light to be a sport though, are there professional teams/leagues or is it more of a sunday afternoon outing kind of thing? I dont think you could play it competitively, the jammers would never catch up to the pack realistically.

  • @irishmakbeth "never catch up to the pack?" LOL! It would be pretty stupid if the pack skated so fast that their jammers couldn't catch up and score points, wouldn't it? Duuuh. The blockers skate relatively slowly.

As for whether there are professional teams and leagues, no. But if you try to just show up on a Sunday afternoon, you will get your ass handed to you. Derby teams practice a minimum of twice a week, and many practice four or five days a week. It's a real time commitment.

  • I was thinking of getting roller derby skates from dick's for my birthday in the summer & I have a track that looks exactly like a roller derby track behind my elementary school! I want to practice and I was wondering if you know any websites of teens for roller derby. I would like to do it as a fun hobby other than soccer. Please answer, thanks 4 the video 2!

  • Nice touch at the end there!

  • oh i'm sorry jajaja xD

  • oh great!

    =D

    hey!? anybody knows the song?????

  • @sanlenispe The song is "Roller Derby Saved My Soul" by Uncle Leon and the Alibis.

Download it free from the band at uncleleon com

  • Great video, and just what I needed , going to photo my first RD in a few weeks and needed to know what was going to happen.

  • I would like to know the name of the song.

  • I want to do roller derby!

  • Thank you for this video! I was wondering how this was played. Helpful vid!

  • THANK YOU Gem City Roller Girls for explaining a lot more thoroughly than the other videos I found on youtube. You sexy field-plowing-thighed beauties. Though I have no idea what "cutting the track" means and wouldn't tripping technically be blocking below the hips (therefore a major foul)??

  • @adambungle The rules have changed slightly (and continue to change) since this video was produced, but most of it is the same, or close enough not to matter (I wouldn't use it to train referees...).

Cutting the track is when any player passes any other player while out of bounds. Passing one player on the track, while out of bounds is a minor, passing more than one player on the track while out of bounds is a major.

  • @adambungle ...Ran out of room... sorry...

Tripping can be a Minor or Major based on the impact of the foul (almost all rules are based on this magical concept of "IMPACT"). If tripping (or a low block) causes the girl to stumble, but not fall or lose her relative position is a minor. Any low contact or tripping that causes her to fall or lose relative position is a major.

  • @bdogdj ..Oh, and blocking to the thigh is not a penalty even if they fall. A low block (or trip) is from just above the knee down...The thigh is fair game.

  • @bdogdj Thanks for clarifying all that! This sport could be bigger than it ever was but sadly one of best things its got going for it also is holding it back. I'm talking about most leagues being skater run and owned. This means each league is flexible and financially independent but also means there is no single company to grow and invest in it on a national level. My states league is a "non profit" their event photos look like school PE lesson and the web site is a free Wordpress blog. Ehh

  • @bdogdj PART 2 - ..Even though, I really want to get involved with my local derby. I could do heaps to promote and expand it in my state. BUT I just don't know what involvement I can have as I'm a male and its a skater run non profit. I love the company of women and the women that play are real, strong, sexy, alternative and outgoing. No vapid bimbos with surface appearance obsessions thankfully..

  • very cool, I miss RD

  • Great video for rookies like me, perfect..

  • what is this song?

  • Are the jammers the only members on the team that can score points?

  • @kris123kris Yes, only the jammers score points. The other players (blockers and the pivot) try to keep the opposing jammer from scoring, while assisting their own jammer through the pack.

  • @bdogdj Okay last question, does the other team get points if you hit someone illegally?

    Lol, thank you

  • @kris123kris No. Teams only score points when their jammers pass opposing players legally (or lap the opposing jammer).

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. It really helped give me a visual on what's happening. I'm trying to learn as much as possible for the 2011 tryouts in New York! Thanks!

  • I'm tyring to learn so I can play.. I'm just confused by one thing.. does the 'jam' only end when the lead jammer decides? Or is there a time limit?

  • @missmittinz A jam is 2 minutes long unless the lead jammer calls it off.

  • I used to watch this on TV when I was small. I was fascinated by it. I always thought it had a ball in it though.

  • What is the name of the song?

  • I remember watching this as a boy but never really understood the object of the game. Thanks for posting this. A nebulous concept in my mind has been clarified.

  • very helpful video!

  • can only the lead jammers score points? or can the opposing one too?

how can the opposing jammer score points when the are not lead jammers?

  • @ColouredHairStreaks Both jammers can score points, but the lead jammer has the advantage of being able to call off the jam at any time. Remember, every jam a new lead jammer (or no lead) is determined. The status doesn't carry over from jam to jam.

  • @bdogdj

    ohh okay thanks :P

  • Square elbow @ 3:30. Beautiful

  • can the lead jammer change during a jam???

  • @sprangs1 No, but a lead jammer can lose her lead jammer status by removing the helmet cover with the star, or by going to the penalty box.

  • awesome cheers. during a jam can the lead jammer change if so how???

  • this was awesome...really love the song as well. Thnx for the explination...

  • And kudos to Harry Bawls

  • I dont know how many time I watch this game, it still fells weird.

  • Finally! Thank you! You have no idea how many places I've looked this up only to be told generalities and still have no idea -what it is-.

  • yay gem city :)

  • well done!!

  • Ah that was very clear explanation. The animation really helped.

lol at the end when the player knocks off the camera hehe.

  • My son says the red head in the intro looks like me, lmao!

  • Cool. My friend just started doing roller derby and I didn't want to go to her games not knowing what was going on.

  • what happens when the lead jammer 'calls it off' ? cool animation btw!

  • @wittyworldlee They reset and it starts all over again. Each jam lasts until the lead jammer calls it off or 2 minutes passes. The bout is split into two 30 minute periods and there can be as many jams in each period as this rule allows.

  • @bdogdj wups i mean before the jammers go round for the second time 2:13 ?

  • @wittyworldlee The same thing happens. They reset and start a new jam.

    This happens a lot.

For example, if the lead jammer falls behind or is passed by the opposing jammer she can call it off before the opposing jammer can pass any of her players. The lead jammer's team doesn't score any points, but it also prevents the opposing team from scoring any points on that jam.

  • @wittyworldlee ohh!! thanks a lot!! you explain really good! :D

  • I find this video great with the understanding of the rules. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • What a great video, thankyou thankyou thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pretty awesome :D

    thanks for making this vid!

  • :) thanks for explaining this. i just saw the film whip it and was intrigued...never heard about this sport before and it looks amazing!

  • thanks this explained it all :)

  • this wuz a very helpful video

  • Comment removed

  • Great clip. Cheers for the thorough explanation. ;)

  • The helmet covers are called panties

  • Im in junior roller derbey and its soooooo much fun! :3

  • what is the track difference? is it a different track for different leagues or just depends on location? flat track vs ___?

  • @FlatBlackLak Flat track Vs Banked track. Roller derby used to be played on an inclined (banked) track (like the one you see in the movie Whip It!), but now the majority of current teams play flat track roller derby, which can be played on any large flat surface (...well, any surface that is big enough for the track).

  • @bdogdj why did they change to flat tracks?

  • @robotXzombie Going to flat track removes the restrictively high cost and major headaches of building and maintaining a track. This opened up the sport to anyone who can find a smooth surface large enough for the track. There are still banked track derby leagues out there, but because of the low cost and ease of setting up a flat track, flat track roller derby has exploded in popularity.

  • Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!!!!!!!

  • Wow, thanks very much for this clip, now I finally understand the basic rules. It's way more fun to watch a jam, when you have a clue what's going on, lol!

  • Very well done

  • question!! do u have to be tough for become a roller girl??

  • @NuNuzuP Considering it's rough, I would reccommend you're not one of em' shall we say, valley girls with manicured nails and perfect hair. Savvy?

  • you have to be able to take a hit and fall down pretty hard without crying like a little girl. and in some cases u might want to be intimidating, or else the other girls on the opposing team will always knock you down.

  • very informative!

  • I love Roller Derby!!

  • Ah, anim8or.

  • Interesting...always wondered what that game was about.

  • That was a great video! I was invited to a bout but had no idea of how the game was played.

  • this vid is awesome!!!

  • rollerderby girls are hot.

  • this is really helpful thanks

  • That was really interesting I wondered what/how to play. i met someone today who is on a rollerderby, she was trying to recruit me. sounds interesting, i might have to check it out.

  • @pretty02roock A year has passed ... have you checked out "Gem City" - Day ton Oh I Oh ?

  • omg I died laughing when the cartoon girl starts punching the hell out of the other cartoon girl..

Very informative, all my friends keep telling me I should be a roller derby girl and I didn't even know wtf it was so this was great. thanks!

  • Informative video...what songs did you use?

  • This version contains some outdated rules, and the text at the end is harder to read. You want the updated version with "v 2-1" at the end of the title.

The first song is "Roller Derby Saved My Soul" by Uncle Leon and the Alibis. You can buy the CD at a web site named for the song. Google it.

  • Going to my first match tonight and I'm pumped! Now I'll know what I'm watching!

  • so does a game usually end as soon as the first jammer has more points than the opponent like in the video? or do they do more and more laps?

  • Jams can last up to two minutes I think, but before that the jammer can call it off anytime, but if she doesn't they just keep lapping but you gotta imagine that sucks when you're the jammer.

  • Thanks for this video! Im going to my first derby try-out tomorrow, and I wasn't really sure what to do but skate. At least I'll know what the hells going on now! :D

  • H. Brawls - how do I get permission to use this as a teaching tool for my newbies on my team? let me know please.

  • Use the updated version that gets the penalties righter and has the fonts toward the end easier to read. It should be over on the right under Related Videos. v 2-1

  • but wait, wouldnt it be a good thing then to get out because then there will be one less person to pass for the other team and they wont be able to score as much? ...

  • Any blockers not in the pack are scored upon as soon as the the first opposing player that IS in the pack is passed. So, instead of not being able to score on them, they are "free" points.

There are always 4 points/pass that can be scored (a 5th point can be scored if the opposing jammer is lapped...Grand Slam!).

  • Are the blockers aloud to pass the pivots?

    >_>

  • Yes, any time after the first whistle blows.

Even though the Pivots "set the pace of the pack" they do not need to stay in the front of the pack. Blockers and pivots may move areound as they wish within the pack.

  • Hey great video. I am about to be fresh meat for and when I read the rules it was kind of confusing, but the visual aspect help.

By the way, loved the girl beating up the other girl in major penalties...classic!

  • Very informative. Thanks!

  • Thank you so much for explaining it!

    :P

This is such an awesome sport.

  • I;ve wanted to do this since I was 14 and finally found a team in my city. Im totally going to the fresh meat session next week and can't f-ing wait!!!! Thanks for posting this

  • i saw whip it and still didnt get the rules now i know and i now am looking up places to do that with my freind(s)

  • Thanks for uploading.

How common are minor penalties in roller derby?

  • Very common, you can get a minor penalty for using you hands to push, or going out of bounds.

  • Thanks for the video very helpful...

  • nice video

  • thank u

  • wow thank you! now i'm ready to see whip it xD

  • omg i saw it first saw it today such a good movie, now im interested in this and i wanna start, im kinda mad im late on this im only 18 so i can only do recreational =[ but this allows time for me to get better

  • Yeah girl! Just have fun with the recreational stuff and learn as much as you can and keep practicing! You'll have an advantage over the fresh meat trying out for your local league! ;)

And there is no such thing as starting too early or too late. There are derby girls ages 18 (depending on league bylaws) to 40-something! All women can kick ass!

  • ok then harry brawls....you do that

  • first half of the video was fantastic, second have was a cluster ___

  • what song is this?

  • That's "Roller Derby Saved My Soul" by Uncle Leon and the Alibis.

Check out our page for more.

  • Okay great but if you want to know where roller girls stand on the issue of legalizing gay marriage, just click on my name.

  • Man, this sport looks boring as hell. It needs more tackling.

  • helps me alot cant wait to start doing this

  • There's a better version, it's over on the right side, Roller Derby Explained v 2-1.

  • Watched it when I was a kid and never had a clue how it worked...now I do. Thanks.

  • Ya know in hockey it's 5 for fighting...so in roller derby if the girls fight it's 1 for fighting?

  • Actually, it's an expulsion from the entire bout.

  • Great Video and thanks for posting it.

I am going to be videotaping my first Roller Derby in a week and this really helped me understand the sport. Now when I go to check out a practice I won't look completely lost. Thanks

  • This is a great animation for understanding the basics.

    Go VRDL! :)

  • my friend wendy is in rollerderby now i understand lol

  • It's been quite a day for me. First, I came across Blood & Thunder magazine (dedicated to Women's Roller Derby) while at Borders and now this video, while surfing for Roller Derby stuff. I used to watch RollerGirls on A&E a couple of years ago. I have yet to see a "live" show. Hopefully someday!

  • well, it's derby season now! so start searching for the closest teams to you and check out their schedules!

  • this helps alot! I know now what i am getting myself into

  • This is awesome! I want to see if we can use it for our league!!

  • That's a pretty cool video. I have posted roller derby video clips from actual bouts on my YouTube channel. Feel free to check them out when you get the chance. Unfortunately a couple of clips didn't upload properly to YouTube, but you can view them on Facebook if you have access to an account.

  • this looks like a kickass way for me to burn off my energy...better than taking it out on my little brother.

  • woooow this sport rocks...

here in mexico there isn't that sport D:

    FUCK!

  • Yes there is. There's a league in Tijuana.

  • i know but in D.F. not

    u_u i've been searching

  • Lo sé, he estado buscando equipos para unirme :( pero como que a nadie le interesa xD soy queretana y tengo interes en practicar este deporte ;D

  • it's a nice explanation video :P
