This camera is amazing,the more you learn how to use it the better it gets!so many features.I personally dont find the noise to bad,and infact this camera has taken some amazing shots for me in less than ideal lighting HANDHELD!I couldnt be more pleased,you would have to spend $1000s to get the same focal length zoom on an slr,sure an slr will gain ground above iso 400,but then again i take pictures to enjoy,NOT to compare and pick fault with at 400% magnification on a monitor!!!!!!!

The quality of this video is not 1080p and I would never call it HD... It's shitty.

It all depends on how you encode it, some of the test videos are crystal clear, others look like they were encoded with windows movie maker.

It seems to have a lot less noise than a lot of dedicated camcorders, and color and shadow / highlight detail looks very good.

If you are considering the Sony HX-1 or Canon SX1 IS, you should also consider the Casio EX-F1 because it has a focus ring around the lens, a external mic jack, a hot shoe, a threaded lens for UV filters, and slow motion (if you want a fun bonus). Hard to believe it's from Casio. The problem is the price.

I bought an SX1 IS about several months ago and have been using it with much comfort - video quality is great. My card is 16GB (Class 6) so no problems at all with bandwidth. Check out my vids and you'll be able to see that the SX1 IS is a great camera for the money range!

youtube can't handle 1080p output... so in best case is at 720p (likely less since that would be full screen on most computers) i would guess...

The SX1 iS is definitely a great camera. Only one drawback to the HD mode is the limited recoding time. I could only record up to 1 and half minute in HD.

what do you mean class 6? don't you just need a fast card? Would a Sandisk 32GB Ultra II SDHC Card at read/write speed up to (15 MB/sec - 100x) be good enough to record continuous?

I bought SX1 IS 3 days ago and when I try to record HD movie at low light there is so much noise that the movie is unwatchable. I just can't setup the correct formula to record HD movies in low light.

I saw HD movie from you and other users of SX1 IS and the movies are wonderful.

Hi! I don't own this camera nor do I know about its settings. But I just thaught: Maybe the noise is produced by your player upon rendering rather then being part of the recorded file itself? I heard some players do that, if they use to much data compression. Just a thaught. ;)

i've got a 450d DSLR but can't take HD video with it... so I was considering getting a camcorder that shoots at 1080p. This could even be a better alternative....

Does it record sound? if so, is it as good as the sound recording on an average HD camcorder?

I have some raw footage shot with my sx1 on my channel. it's quite nice actually, especially for a small camera. You should however be aware of that his camera uses CMOS. Which means rolling shutter artifacts and wobbly (jelly) videos when shooting handheld.

I notice compression on the video though. All of these cameras use compression whether it's HD or not unless you are using something like MiniDV. Does the source have less compression..etc? Does the source look sharper than what we see here even in HD?

Actually, Mini DV compresses like fucking hell. It's the WORST format for HD video recording. I have over 10 years of experience in cinematography--believe me, I know.

The compression in this video is from YouTube, not the innate camera compression standard H.264.

That standard while great for consumer level is still not good enough. I researched this and still too much artifacting and noise. Was hoping it would be lossless compression but it's not. Unfortunately.

wow 10 years. Mini DV has lossless and virtually no compression. It's the format closest to broadcast for the pro-sumer market. Mini DV does not compress like you say and is NOT the worst format and is in fact the best for pro-sumers. You know nothing.

Compression is only one factor you need to consider, the sensor is ultimately much more a factor than compression.

The average Mini DV camera has a crap sensor that is very grainy even in moderate light conditions.

This camera, and its predecessors like the S3 IS have extremely good image quality through and through, including low light and night shooting that would be impossible without a 3 CCD HD pro camera.

Go do some more research, and remember, this can do things a camcorder cant.
