I'm afraid Harry Wragg was a little before my time also. My interest in horse racing began in 1961 when my beloved Nicolaus Silver won the Grand National at 28/1. Yes, Tarqogan was a classy Irish handicapper who actually finished fourth in Relko's Derby in 1963. You may recall that Tarqogan won the Cambridgeshire in 1965 carrying top weight of 9st 3lbs. He was ridden by Bill Williamson and trained by your fellow Irishman, Seamus McGrath. Good speaking to you here on YouTube.
I left school at 14, in 1950, and was far more interested in the geegees than maths. Odd as it may seem, I look back on those days with pleasure. I studied the Racing section of the Daily Express like I should have been studying shakespeare. I knew how many lbs equalled a neck or a length, instead of how many miles to the moon.
The great MV O'Brien was still training winners over the sticks in those days. Leater Piggott was, and is, my favourite flat jockey of all time.
It seems we both had a misspent childhood and youth. I couldn't agree with you more,my friend, my childhood was the happiest time of my life, I lived every minute of it. So much so ,in fact, that I have immersed myself with things that remind me of those wonderful days. I have Raceform Annuals with all the results from the 1960 to 1966 (Flat and NH). I also have thousands of episodes of the TV shows from the late 50's and early 60's. Vincent and Lester were the best.
Not much to do with Teenoso, but just replying here - I liked Bob Turnell as a trainer of hurdlers, and Andy was a good jockey. My family couldn't afford a TV in the fifties - my dad liked the horses, but didn't make enough money on them to buy a television. :-)
I know what you mean, our family weren't exactly rolling in money either. Yes, Bob Turnell was a brilliant trainer and had some very good horses: Pas Seul, Buona Notte, Rondetto, Salmon Spray to name but a few. I also remember that as well as his son,Andy, Jeff King and Johnny Haine also rode for him. If nothing else,1oldirishman, we have our memories.
sorry pal.. have to pull ya up on that one.. vincent +david o brien also achieved this.. david with secreto and vincent with golden fleece, the minstel , nijinsky, roberto etc....
I had completely forgotten about Secreto being trained by Vincent's son, David. I stand corrected and suitably reproved. I have also removed the erroneous post. My regards to you , raborian.
no bother chief!! i'd no idea that it had been done by anyone else till i read ur post... thanks for the heads up on it tho.. might come in handy for any future table quizzes
ah lester....will we ever see his like again? sadly the answer is 'no'.
he was the ONLY jockey that you could keep your eyes on all the way through he race. you didn't need to know the colours he was wearing.
i know as well as anyone that your money was never safe on his mounts but there was no one better at race tactics or riding a finish.we've all lost track of the mounts lkp won on that no other jock in the world would have done.
Last Derby before the fences went up on the Downs, changing the character of Derby Day, and begining the decline in the status of the race as a national sporting event.
The horse that finished second, Carlingford Castle was a magnificent looking animal. Unfortunately he was 2nd in just about every race he ever took part in.
got to agree with you terbine13, i know like me ,you wont have a bad word said against teenoso !! . a very underestimated colt ,a lot better than people give credit . apart from the above opposition there was also wassl ,seymour hicks who beat him at york.
due to his pedigree he was always going to be better at 4 than 3 ,every horse who beat him at 3 would definalty have been put in its place at the following year (1984).
cheers, didnt Piggot know how to look after a good horse only making Teenoso do enough.Killed his race by the 2f pole and then coast the last couple of furlongs. He was a true horseman.Have you seen his Arc win on Alleged yet?
hi marcus yes ive seen alleged's arc wins, piggott was a genious wasnt he,i remember his ride on teenoso in the grand prix de paris where the horse threw his head in lesters face and cut him really badly, the horse was obviously upset at something and looked like he was going to be beaten ,but lester got his head down (abeit covered in blood !) on the line, think he beat esprit du nord who was fairly decent colt himself.
Much under-rated horse- an absolute monster who demolished the derby field and was even better at 4. Possibly the fact that he did absolutely nothing as a sire (predictable as he was from an unfashionable sire line) has counted against him.
Nice to see that video again, first time for about ten years. Yep, Teenoso was a proper horse, full of courage and an authentic Derby Winner, certainly in the top ten of the last thirty years IMO.
Am so glad this has finally been put on here, Mitilini was my favorite horse when I was at school, I followed his jumps and point to point career too.
He was trained by several people in his jumps career, ended up in the Cheltenham Foxhunters the race before Desert Orchid was beaten by Nortons Coin in the 1990 Gold Cup.
Apart from greys which I love, I have always loved those flashy chestnut types with flaxen manes and tails and white blazes and markings, thats why I loved Mitilini, there was also a horse around the same time called High Debate i followed him too, Farmer Jock, Double trigger & Artimarvel I also loved..
good grief leigh quiet a selection there, didnt artimarvel race till he was around 16? , high debate was trained by h.cecil for a while wasnt he ,as son of high line! vaguely remember farmer jock-a sprinter i think?.i like the flashy chestnut types myself ,scimmitara, balanchine, generous, zoman etc,but i have a penchant for the shergar look bold bay with the white face and white feet :-)...you have a very good memory by the way .
High Debate was trained by Malcolm Jefferson and won the Zetland stakes in 1983 as a 2yo, bizarely Double trigger won the same race exactly 10 years later!
High Debate went on to win over hurdles and fences but sadly was killed in a chase in his second season, The same owners had a horse called Outstanding Bill who was also a flashy chestnut and started his career in the Brocklesby at Doncaster.
Artimarvel ran a great race in the 1984 Topham @ Aintree where he was 2nd.
its great that people have fond memories of lesser animals , i used to like a horse trained by geoff lewis called My Tony he was a flashy chestnut ,a very good handicapper, also double dutch a staying mare
Do you remember the Ebor winner, Kneller? He was with Cecil and would have gone on, I think, to much greater things. If memory serves he died prematurely as a three or four year old. I was a big fan.
Peerless Piggott! Teenoso so impressive..such a shame he had injury problems which really meant we didn't see his full potential. Thanks blackbird, I will wear this clip out!

I remember my dad talking about The Head Waiter.
A bit before my time. But I DO remember Tarqogan.
And not just because of the strange spelling.
