An argument can be made that Babe Ruth still holds both the single season and career home run records. His 60 HR in '27 was in a 154 game season and wasn't under a cloud of suspicion. His 714 career HR weren't tainted by anything. But I know Roger Maris is the single season record holder with 61, no more asterisk. He finally got his due, and was PED free as well. McGwire, Sosa, Bonds...they all took PED. The HR totals of 73, 70, 66, 65, 64, 63 are all tainted.

The fact is that Barry Bonds was far far far and away the best player in baseball prior to his steroid use. In Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract the authorshows that based on their statistics Bonds was the best player of the 90s, Craig Biggio was second and Greg Maddux (the highest ranked pitcher) was tenth. Maddux was closer in value to Biggio than Biggio was to Bonds. The steroids took the best player in baseball and made him insurmountably incredible. He was already a Hall of Famer.

Strength is a factor of course but the reality is that THE SWING IS THE MAJOR FACTOR NOT STRENGTH when it comes to hitting a homerun, take a look at his swing. Hank Aaron was a tremendous baseball player and did not cheat. Hundreds of others have played VERY WELL without using banned substances. In 1993 Bonds hit 46 homeruns. Two years later, in 1995, he hit 33. Nobody believes he was taking until 1998. So Barry proved that he was capable of hitting 46 homeruns back in '93. He also hit 46 the year after hitting 73. Why didn't he hit 80? If he was on roids "the miracle drug" he should have hit 80 homeruns, but instead he goes back to hitting 46 which he proved he could hit in '93. Why people choose to crucify this man is beyond me.
