Poodles are great, everyone thinks they're so fancy and snobby but ours is really smart and fast. She knows over 100 words so we have to be careful what we say, she'll recognize a word in the middle of a sentence. She thinks she's a human. She also thinks she's a big, scary watch dog because she barks at anyone who comes by our house. I love poodles, we recently go a cocker spaniel and you can see that the spaniel's attention is just on food, meanwhile our poodle has a much more complex mind.
My Mini poodle does the same thing but thinks shes a germain shapared!!!!!!!!!! and then my other dog will come see if we're okay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We also have 3 standard Poodles. They are NOT just big versions of the little ones. Standards were the original poodles that were used for hunting, guarding, and were/are great water dogs. They tie for 1st place with Austrailian Shepherds for Most Intelligent and trainable. We keep our shortish because they swim and go to the horse farm with us. SUPER great dogs. Ours all came from Florida Poodle Rescue.
@gilsbebe dont you mean border collies as most intelligent - after all they are the collie that most others are bred from (aussies you can deifnately see the resemblance)
I grew up with a black standard poodle and she was incredibly intelligent. I've had other dogs through the years and have loved them all, but no other breed can hold a handle to the standrad poodle!
I love poodles. I've had three over the course of my life. Hopefully soon I can get one or two more. Smart, incredibly sociable, alert, and attentive.
I love it when they cock their heads, and have a fairly unique bark. Most that I've seen, are great with children. :D I fully endorse this breed!
I am having black miniature poodle, she is one of most clever dogs I saw and I got!
She understands when we are talking - husband and I - and if we don't want to get her with us somewhere, we MUST PAY ATTENTION not talk about it! Avoid certain words-otherwise she is anxious because possibility she might go out too! And she is good guardian dog - that's for sure. Once, I needed to help meisters in the house to go out alive without being ripped! LOL
Thing is, no one came to the door. I just gave her an alert with a little whistle and she jumped into action. Point of this is to just show people (who have the perception that Standard Poodles are weird, dumb or "foo foo") that dogs of this breed are actually alert, intuitive and intelligent... just my small attempt to show them in a different light.
I have 4 poodles, one standard and three minitures. The standard, Justice, sits in the bay window in my dining room and watches people up and down my street, the minitures sit on the stairs waiting for Justice to alert them. It isn't possible for anyone to approach my house without being noticed--often to my chargrin. :D
I know, ours are the same way. When guys hang fliers on the door and don't even ring the bell, these two go nuts. If any of them are considering doing something shady, it will make them think twice about doing it at our house.
I would love to train a standard in schutzhund! My miniature would be brilliant if he wasnt so reactive (in a friendly way!) towards people.

I have four standards, three cream and one black and they are all very terratorial, more so the two that we raised from puppies than our two rescues.

Our Standard Nelly starts running toward the door and barking when someone is on the elevator and our condo is on the 10th floor!

Nelly, our standard blue poodle, barks when someone is in the elevator coming up to our condo and we are on the 10th floor.

My Standard starts running and barking seconds before the doorbell even rings! Sometimes I wonder how he knows someone is coming.
