He gave that cylinder more of a circular hatching pattern and less of the cross-hatched pattern which is essential for lubrication to prevent the aluminium piston skirt scuffing dry up against the cylinder wall. It's a disgrace that someone who is so hopeless at honing should be teaching people how to do it. No wonder Japanese and European cars last so much longer than American cars.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I can see it now all these kids going home and destroying there dirtbikes and go karts using this guys shitty teaching that were paying for!
someone needs to come up with a better engine design that doesn't require this or a dozen other things in precise mechanical tolerance... because doing this bullshit.. is just... bullshit.
u are all DB's.. what he has done in the video is just fine.. someone is always qucik to slam someone because they are too bored, never had hands on experience or are just jealous. GET A LIFE people
You want to float the hone to get an even score on the cylinder walls. Solvents don't do that as well as oil not to mention the effect on the abrasive on the hone itself.
I pretend not to be a mechanic, how ever if you go to the whole trouble to do all this work, why not wait a little bit save the extra cash and send it to a machine shop is all worth it.they'll do the crankshaft, dip in,clean as new etc... my body was going to do it by hand w/a drill and the whole concept I couldn't buy it.time.......& I plan to keep this car for as long as I'm a live or pass it to my kids everything new.original will be 325es B
this is horrible.. I can't believe you are teaching these student to manually hone instead of just s hipping it to a machine shop to be bored and honed properly and evenly. these poor kids will be dealing with cylinders not sealing their whole lifes because of you..
I disapporve your comment, I think it's good that this techer is teching these students how to manually do it them selves. And besides.. no body wants to pay extra money for S+H
The other thing is those things are coarse, I would use only plain cast rings after honing with that monster, it would wear the moly off a good set of rings by break in.
You know what if your rebuilding an engine you should rebore it check the head for warpage and use plastigauge on your crankshaft we never do that, its all bullshit unless that engine was abused in that case i wouldent even touch it
put new rings valve seals belt and tensioner thats it and I never had any problems
most people dont keep engines for like 20 years lol
I hope this guy is just a temp or something and not the actual teacher because it's obvious he does NOT know how to correctly deglaze and put a proper crosshatching in to a cylinder.
First mistake: Using an air gun. Use an electric or cordless drill set to low.
Second mistake: Using solvent as a lubricant. The use of solvent is NOT adequate lubricant and destroys the adhesive in the tool.
Third mistake: Uneven strokes. Always use smooth, even strokes through the entire bore.10-45 seconds.
@NicholasDaMally You do know that on some air compressor there is a flow regulator valve for adjusting the amount of pressure going out the tank. you can lower air pressure and lower the guns rpm.
Instruction like this is why we cannot build a quality automobile anymore. The dumbing down of America, part I.

retard! Way too high RPM's w/o lubrication & used solvent!
docvegas222 6 months ago
this 'instructor' is a retard
no cross hatch pattern, WAY to fast RPM.

is that chrome coated?, be careful if honing coated cyls
and a line hone is better

Those rings would chatter like crazy if it was assembled. Im not sure this guy even knows what a cross hatch pattern IS

@CrowOfHellsing teacher or not, what he is saying is right. this guy here would probably knows his stuff better than the dude in the vid
abeepak1 1 year ago
@CrowOfHellsing He may not be, but hes absolutely right. The guy in the video IS doing it completely wrong. Thats a fact
efp1103 1 year ago
he said solvent AND trans fluid.
but ye it was total bullshit.... no idea how to hone.
and your meant to use a nylon brush after honing to clean out all grit.... NOT soapy water.
marek0086 2 years ago
You are exactly correct NO Solvent! It degrades the adhesive on the hone grit.
Use hone oil or a light motor oil.
Also, only run 5 passes each way and then look at the bore. If there are still deep scratches or scoring, get a rebore.
Spang06 2 years ago 6
this is the worst hone job iv ever seen!
Way too fast.... you're meant to use a cordless drill!
