this is why it's good to crop their ears. it helps to protect from infections and hematomas. although cropping does provide them with more migrains and increased aggrivation. so really it's a "is the juice worth the squeeze" kinda deal
my dog had the same condition and after two operations in a row i removed the bandage this evening. by night i noticed his ear is all swollen up with tight tension in the bubble, he seems to be in lot of pain so i gave him 2 mil of melonex syrup (pain killer + sedator) and after 20 minutes while he was asleep i drained some of the fluid with a syringe ( thanks to your vid) and when he woke up he looked much relieved from pain. i can relax for now and take him to vet first thing in the morning.
@JRose670 Actually it returns from the hole healing back up and filling back up with fluid/blood, you have to install a plastic tube into the hole and let it drain for a week are so.. i have had to do it a couple of times on my dog

can you do this yourself or do you need a vet ? (vets are expensive) My dog has this on his ear and won't let me get near his ear, I think it's time to pop it :)
The hematoma was to advanced and ended up returning. We've had to have surgery on both Dobies, this was just a last ditch effort to see if it would work. My Dobes are un-cropped, so I don't know how it would affect a cropped ear.
how did it heal after it was drained like this? lumpy/cauliflower looking at all? my GSD now has one, he cant be put under for surgery due to his heart so it will have to be done this way. I hope his ear will stand back up after :(

@brymetheous2 the vet would do the exact same thing, the only difference is you have to pay a LOT afterwards...

I used an IV cath to drain it.

I love it when the dog looks down and sees the pool of blood at his feet. 'Is that mine? Don't I need that?' Priceless.

What type of needle did you use for this? I am needing to treat a hematoma on my border collie.

you should probably suck on it like a straw. A little salty, but it will drain faster and heal quickly.
