This film is very entertaining. You should try the 1938 version, that one is just as good, perhaps even better, but thats probably just my taste. the part of Sgrooge in the 1938 version, is better anyway.I saw this one many years ago as a child at the cinema, here in southampton england.
this is a great version with excellent acting; thanks for uploading! I'd always thought Alistair Sim's version was good, but now I realize this first one has much better acting.
I caught this last night (Christmas Eve) on my local TV station - it's so very odd and strange.
I got the cheap over-dramatically played parts, but it was actually a fresh perspective on an old story, and it was actually entertaining to watch...
I preferred watching this over the idiotic-at-times and overplayed to death "A Christmas Story," the beaten to death, cheap-looking "A Wonderful Life" and will watch this again ANY TIME over ANY horrible Charlie Brown cartoon.
This movie seems much better than the remake with Jim carrey even if Jim carrey is good and the animated movie in synthetic images was nice. But i didn't know this black and white movie and actually Jim carrey's one is a copy. Thanks for this rare film.

lazy bitches should have gotten themselves a job. They always blame scrooge for there misery. He got his money leave him alone and get your own mother fuckers!
to have someone that sticks by you even though you cant really do much moniteraly is a good thing and if they stick by you it's real. I am weaning my son out of that mentality and he is learning that sometimes things are not that important so when he cant get something he understands. im pretty sure these fools have another gathering coming up on this date another ritual revolving around money, religion and military cause the wicked work hard to be wicked and attempt to look like saints.
Im no scrooge though i liked christmas it was for the kids, my mom would call us to look out the window and would point at a plane at night and tell us that was santa clause. so as long that children are not learning that love can be purchased, when you get into the habit of buying love what may happen is that when you cant't buy something in the place of love conflict comes in. I love first and if i struggle to get a gift then its more meaningful to me no matter the price.
An invisible Marley? Kind of takes the horror out of that scene. And they couldn't have sprung an extra couple bucks for an actor to play a young Scrooge? It's interesting to see "stage" acting on film, but since this is such an early film, that was the norm. Interesting version overall.

This is a 1935 version of Scrooge which I discovered on DVD about 8 years ago.
The atmosphere of this production captures a feeling of Charles Dickens' 19th century more authentically than any other I've seen. I really believe it captures a feeling of the time of Dickens more than any other version I've seen.
Because of the length, you may have to exit out and try to reload if you have trouble with the connection.
The first scene begins with an out of tune trio of street musicians outside of Scrooge's counting house. The wrong notes are well planned, but don't this opening scare you away from watching the movie. There are a few 1935 special photographic effects and the appearance and the manner of the actors are very effective in presenting London in 1835. You can feel the misery and cold.
This is however ( to me ) quite charming as it had the Audible dialogue but also a strong musical score behind it and the same volume as the sound of the actors voices.....
I guess they were dipping their toe in the pool before diving in . I love this version but Yes YOU got it !
Alistair Sim was and Is THE BEST Ebeneezer Scrooge EVER
Who knew they're movie back in 1935 would end up on a magical screen that you could pause rewind and fast forward, and could be viewed by anyone around the world.
Hate that Koodo wrestler guy... I prefered the older Koodo commercials that were clever and artistic; these are just "trendy" at best (Like everyone elses)
I love this story...perhaps it is because I believe in its message. I agree with you LuckyStrike...we must remember our conscience in face of a world that often does not. We must remember that our lives are about more than making money and acquiring of temporary things. We live to make a difference in the world, by touching the lives of others we meet along the way. Only the good that we do in this world will last. Merry Christmas everyone...remember the true meaning for the season.
@OoOKrazyGirlOoO The abbreviation 'Xmas' for Christmas is of Greek origin. The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christ's name, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language mistook "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect.
If pple that rules the world would see this story, if they notice what people face, and they needings..How much i want that those "spirits" would appear to lot of "scrooges" who dont care the situation of people who surrounded them....and in a cynical way say "merry christmas"....
This version is ok, but the actor playing the Ghost of Christmas Present was very flat and really didn't seem to make much of an effort at the role. I also would have preferred to see Marley and the Lord Mayor's Banquet as far as I know wasn't in the Dickens original. But other than that, its quite good for the time.
Seymour Hicks and the actor playing the nephew as well as Mrs Cratchit were good at their roles.
All things being equal in the Scrooge arena, I usually tend to go with a black & white classic version and, for me that version was always Alistair Sims —That is until George C. Scott owned the role of Scrooge in '84; redefining the standard for insight into just who Ebenezer Scrooge was and the most impactful way to play that character's transformation —If anyone reading this has yet to experience it, do pick up a copy and treat yourself to an amazing performance...
As a first 'talkie' version, it is very good and sticks to Dickens' original story and was no doubt a hit in its time, but for me, Alistair Sim's 1951 version is THE definitive Scrooge!. This story is a brilliant piece of English literature, and is part of our great Christmas tradition. Long may it continue, and continue without the tacky Hollywood glitz or the poison of political correctness. Merry Christmas Everyone- God Bless Us - Everyone!.
@pyglett Agreed! I have the bastardised coloured version of the Alister Sim classic, so whenever I watch it I adjust the 'colour' mode on my remote untill the picture is black and white, and watch it as it was MEANT to be.
Why is it that the version I have of this classic is only just under an hour long?? It came as a companion piece to the 1951 version on DVD. I'm glad I get to see the whole thing on here!

Dear Mr Bunnerabb. Once upon a time England stood for faith and values and was a great Christian nation. Now she "Hoovers" (great American capitalist product) up bad ideas about socialism and hands over the country to the Moslem horde. God will bless your nation, and mine, when we both return to Him.J ust another perspective from a cousin across the sea. Rule Britannia!

I hope you all have a great Christmas, and God bless us, every one! :)
OoOKrazyGirlOoO 1 year ago 4

Movies made in the 60's and earlier are great - movies made in the 20's and 30's are awesome.

I have seen SEVERAL versions of A Christmas Carol.
But I think I like this Scrooge the best. He plays a wonderful old, grumpy bastard.

Anyway thankyou for downloading it. Worth seeing.

@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 u did not see him thats why
booker80 1 year ago
@WORLD8NSH5KNIGHT1 The dinner at the Lord Mayor's was referenced in the book. Dickens just didn't make a big issue out of it.

@jinxer70 you can thank Ted Turner for the color version when i saw it the first time it didn't look right.

Why is it that the version I have of this classic is only just under an hour long?? It came as a companion piece to the 1951 version on DVD. I'm glad I get to see the whole thing on here!

That can also go for the British Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Ian Duncan Smith who believes unemployed people should be criminalised.
And George Osborne while we are at it.
