I was more into rock in the 70's but a lot of my mates were NS worshippers. I remeber getting talked into getting the bus from Dundee to Wigan Casino with them and had some of the best nights of my life. This number along with Needle in a Haystack and Ghost in my house always brings great memories flooding back...
Anything by Little Anthony is music at its finest & "Better Use Your Head" is a stunning soulful classic sounding timeless all these years later...Bravo Little Anthony!!!
Dedicated to Chessy, a guy who likes his Northern even more than I do........but I'm catching up mate, even if it's taken me 35 years to do so. Uncle Okk.
first heard this at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens Sunday Club, then bought it in a little shop in Hartlepool (don't ask) in hot summer of 76. My first vinyl single. Fab!
hi, was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. ive been looking for a northern song now for a long time now but i cant rember who its by. some of the lyrics are
"you be alone in the night with your arms reaching out just to hold me tight
Let me say, I'll keep the faith and hang on it forever. 'hooked for a lifetime.
So at last we have taken this music to the new century and I'm sure our children will do so also. For my part: Me son (3 years!) loves this much and dancing like a little devil on Northern tunes.
ahh crap i really miss dancing, listening to all these old fav's has brought a tear to my eyes, honestly i'm disabled now but I was a half decent dancer at Wigan and in my head I still feel like I could just jump up and burst into dance that would show the kids a thing or two and probably have them gob smacked, if only
I first heard "Better Use Your Head" played out C.mid-1974, (on UK United Artists). Was it played earlier than that, say at the Wheel etc.? Anyone know?
Oh, boy. What a bright, intelligent person YOU are. Do you EVER have the gift of rejoinder. Thank you for gracing our planet with your vast knowledge.
All Little Anthony's recordings make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Uplifting and chilling at the same time, it lifts your spirits to listen to it, and gives you an adrenaline rush when you dance to it! Two "natural highs" for the price of one !
@fntime WTF are you gagging on about, you bloody weirdo?? I have almost FORTY YEARS of Soul history as it happens. If there's anyone who doesn't get "an adrenaline rush" from dancing to Soul music, then they're dead from the neck down, as well as up! I was speaking from the heart - sorry if that embarrasses some of you more anally retentive Yanks, who evidently barely think at all!
@fntime ...whereas most English people don't hate Americans - we just think the "born again Christian Evangelist nutcases" (and those who believe in reincarnation) are complete morons - ring any church bells? Go set fire to yourself. It would make a pleasant change.
P.S. Your so-called "thoughts" are as interesting to me as those of goldfish, as my "bottom" is invasion free, thank you so much for asking...
@fntime I may not "know it all", but I know enough about Soul music to make a valid comment without worrying what some nutter thinks about it.
P.S. We all know who you are by the way. Adopting several different pseudonyms doesn't disguise your appalling spelling and lack of intellect. You really should get a life - and while you're at it, maybe a dictionary...
@fntime You appear to have a morbid and unhealthy obsession with other people's reproductive organs and sex lives! Perhaps you should go away and read your barmy Creationist literature for a while, as you know nothing about me and your increasingly hysterical fantasies are becoming tiresome in the extreme. I suggest you chill out and listen to some music, before you expire from sexual frustration.
I have NO idea what a "shine box" is, and have even less desire to know. Go away you silly man.
@drwhatson I guess that's one way of looking at! Would you reread your comments, you are such a tool! I think about the poor guy, who has to sleep with you! Poor Bastard! Your friend Patricia e-mailed me, she said, that you are the laughing stock of your village. Your own people laugh at you, now, you have the whole world laughing. Patricia said, you have an problem with young boys, hey each to their own. Degenerates come in all flavors, you are a sad lad!
@fntime You are truly, truly, TRULY barmy. I have no "friend named Patrica". I live in a city, not a so-called "village" and I don't "sleep with any guy". Did your invisible rabbit friend Harvey tell you all this? You are f*****g NUTS mate! Go and ask your shrink for a different set of tablets, 'cos this lot ain't working.
@fntime ...as for the "world laughing at ME", I beg to suggest otherwise... Maybe you should read some of the messages people have left on your own channel.
hondatom777 says that you are: "maybe one of the most stupid people on Youtube", I however would certainly nominate you 'Numero uno'.
@fntime you are an idiot, most english love the old soul and it was the english who led the modern world against racism.......american soldiers who in america were treated like crap during world war 2 were made welcome in England in a tolerant society that understood equality...................love a little.. and if you are a black american you should love the Brits...we love you

Wonderful. I seem to remember that they also recorded a song "Hypnotized" but I haven't heard it or of it since. Am I mistaken? It was in the late sixties after they settled theri dispute with their record company.
CONGRATS to THE IMPERIALS ...LITTLE ANTHONY, ERNEST , CLARENCE, SAMMY , and NAT on your INDUCTION INTO THE 2009 CLASS of the ROCKAND ROLL HALL OF FAME !!!
Remember getting a lift home from Dave Godin, and getting a very brief mention in Blues and Soul. Thought I was soooo cool, which means I wasn't. What a gent, sadly missed.
'geator' The references are to Dave Godin - the 'Blues & Soul' writer who initially coined the phrase "Northern Soul", and who was the first (and at that time only!) The guy doing the back drop on the kent album cover is my mate sean from enfield london...
Funny enough I dont think I ever heard this tune played AT the 100 club their play list was more about dead from the neck up stuff not like this boss tune
Come to think of it I can only choose 4 because I cant decide on the 5th outright although several of your you tube favs come close. Top 4 Frankie Valli...The Night, Montclairs...Hung Up On Your Love, Carstairs...It Really Hurts Me and this of course. Do you remember an instrumental I think by The Brothers called Are You Ready For This or similar that would possibly be my 5th but I havent heard it for years
Isn't it lovelly to hear a nice crackly old vinyl sound instead of digitally remastered. Great track, definately puts me in mind of northern/scooter do's in the 80's. Good upload ta.
This is such a class track. This was the 1st northern soul record i ever bought, as a skinny little young mod back in the early 80's, now i'm just a chubby old scooterist, but hey i still love this song as much as i did then.
Another great one by the IMPERIALS : Little Anthony,Clarence, Ernest, and Sammy. One of their few up- tempo songs , and a song that should have been a MUCH BIGGER HIT when it first came out in ' 66 !!!
This track introduced me to Northern Soul in the summer of 1976. 4 friends & me had a week in a caravan in Mablethorpe that summer as we left school and it was on the juke Box, 8 plays for 50p or something and we just played this & Johnny Johnsons ' Purple Haze ' over & over - Happy days
Funny enof i was at skegness then lisening to this cool song and even then soul is still with me and going to a allnighter in blackburn on the 17 nov faith be with you and it never ends for me
there will never be music like this again love it .

What are the other four?

Good upload ta.

yes and I wished I'd turned off the infra red sensor on the laptop before I recorded it off the vinyl
