@GonzaloGoju Arashiro Masanobu was originally a student of Toguchi Seikichi. He learned all of his kata from Toguchi Sensei except Kururunfa and Suparenpei. I have to look up the names of the two sensei who taught him those two kata. He left Toguchi's dojo and changed his name to Shinjo Masanobu. (Same Kanji, just a different pronunication for New Castle.) Yagi Meitoku became his ADVISOR when he opened the Shobukan.
My grandfather--nonno as we italians say-- was extremely impressed when he watched how fast i ran laps and pushed myself in my traditional jujitsu class. He told me he never pushed himself like that in his life-and he was in construction. I wonder what he would think of this video, seeing that a man his age can have as much and more power and strength than i have! Pretty amazing. 2:50 would scare the pants off of most people-but i'm not surpised; I know that martial artists know no bounds.
Spent 15 years in the U.S. military in Asia. Mas was one of my first senseis - 1964 - Shoreikan - He not only was the most humble of all my senseis, but was the MOST physically powerful of anyone I have ever met - Jim Botsford
One of the aims of kata is to increase your power. He had good waza. I just would have liked to see more power behind the waza. In my dojo, we are constantly told to train as we fight. That means hitting as hard in kata as we would in an actual fight. When a kata is done correctly, every block and every stike should be done with such power that no one would want to get in the way of any part of your kata. And, when you train like that, you fight like that.
@tree6014 WOW. You would like to see more POWER from Shinjo Masanobu Sensei??? I have never heard that about him in my life!!!! If you think he is not showing any power, I think your dojo must be quite awesome. Congratulations!
Wondering what system you train in and where? How long??? Good Luck with your training.
Oh yes, please. Let us know where you train so that we may come and sit humbly at the feet of the master.
Of course, even though it may look as though he has no power (to your eyes), I know that I myself would not want to get hit by the least of one of those punches in the kata he just performed.
One thing to realize is that it is possible to have power without showing it. I myself have taught proper punching technique in the school I train at and have moved people twice my size with only a 1/2 power punch
@tree6014 Checked your age on your profile. Your remarks above shows your 22 year old experience. You may think otherwise after you've trained longer. Kata and karate in general teaches us to apply power in the most effective manner. Your premise of being able to destroy your opponent with overwhelming power is false. One must be able to control their power, this premise is built into the fabric of karate. I would suggest that u look around at some of the other high caliber teachers doing this
this kata; such as Chinen, Morio Higaonna, etc. that teach the proper way of kata flow. Stay away from the tournament related performances because IMHO their kata is just wrong.
Ganbatte,
ps. My dojo doors are always open to people that want to learn.
@NewEnglandBudo I wasn't by any means trying to say that power is more important than the ability to control it. I understand that technique and the ability to get the maximum effectiveness with minimal effort is by far more important than power in and of itself; however, it is important to execute the techniques with power as well. Especially if you're fighting someone who is twice your size for example.
@tree6014 With respect to you, I think your comment sounds disrespectful to Masanobu, Sensei. Perhaps you did not mean it in such. Sounds as many young KarateKa who idolize the Shitei Kata performed now-a-days. Their performance of Kata could be described as Laughable with all unnecessary pausing and lack of power for aesthetic.
Seeing footage of Shinjo Sensei doing that kata brings back wonderful memories of my three years spent in his dojo. A very knowledgeable and kind hearted man... wish he was still with us. R.I.P.

How Old is this Respected GoJu Ryu practitioner? 70, 80 and can still do a kata with such grace and power. Okinawans are AWESOME!....

If you pause it right on 3:00 - you would have a great picture to include in a memorial wall or collage for Goju Ryu practitioners.

@tree6014 From the Seito Goju site:
Six Principles of Kata
Kata must be alive and done with feeling
Kata must be performed with true fighting spirit
Kata should be done with changes in application of power
Kata must be done with proper rhythm of breathing
Kata should be done with variations in timing
Kata must be performed with the proper balance
