Actually, Square made ff4-8 system first, then story. And Aeris' death wasn't planned until late anyway- they were to disk 3's story development when they decided that there was only room for one female lead character. And thus, one of the most iconic scenes in video game history was born. They deleted a lot of aeris material in d2/3- including her ultimate weapon- that you can find with good disk hacking. Thus fueling all those lame ass "resurrect aeris" rumors.

@udsuna This is news to me - I wasn't aware of any Aerith weapons that you couldn't get in vanilla gameplay. The Princess Guard is the only one that has a power-up (hence people like to call that the ultimate), and the only one with a higher Attack (prior to said power-up) is the Umbrella which you can get from Speed Square, but only in disc 1. If you get it at the first visit to the Gold Saucer Aerith briefly becomes one of your best physical attackers XD

Are you sure it was late from development? After beating the game for the very first time a week ago(on PSP), I researched some crap. There was a quote from an interview stating that Aerith was one of the first characters developed. They also stated that right from the start, they had to pick a character to kill off. They thought Barret wasn't really a good choice but was their second choice. Aerith becoming the first.

@udsuna I'm pretty certain that's all a load of bollocks. Especially as Tifa was one of the last characters to be added to the roster, after Yuffie infact. The reason Tifa was added was because they had planned to kill Aeris and realised that the only other female character was optional. She was most certainly not killed off because there was only room for one female lead. This ultimate weapon is also news to me.

On another note... nice video. I've never seen Aerith using 4xcut materia before.

Actually, Aeris' Princess Guard doubles and triples in power when one or both allies are KOd, so those are natural hits along with the Hero Drink (nevermind that the stat differences between characters aren't that high anyway). Aeris is capable of doing that for reals, I've done it myself. The only cheating required is the one to put her back in the party.

To everyone else, the reason she has 4x cut and slash all animations is because the decision to kill her off was made in mid development after her animations were already complete.

2- the boss cant attack because aerith has counter- mime in her materia setup.

Second of all, Aerith's (actually pronounced Aeris btw, Japanese does not have a "th" sound) best weapon (I forget the name) gets a damage multiplier to it based on how many characters are disabled in combat. I believe its x2 if one person is down, x4 if both. With two down and the proper Materia set up, Aerith becomes a powerhouse.

Actually, it could probably be applied from 6 onwards. 6's overpowered equipment combined with the evade glitch made it exceptionally easy.  The only thing to watch out for was Ultima, and only 2 optional enemies use it and it could be avoided with reraise.

For stuff like this it's not a matter of "better", but what's interesting. A regular level 50~80 party eventually persevering with aid of the lolstrongest summon is just... normal. Plain. Boring. Everyone did it their first playthrough.

Seeing Barret machinegun Emerald to death, Cloud or Tifa solo Emerald at level 7, or the weak little mage girl pummel the enemy with the most defense in the game into the dirt - that's interesting to me and apparently others, regardless of "cheapness".

Technically, neither "Aeris" nor "Aerith" is an accurate translation. The Japanese version, if translated right, is "Euris" or "Euaris." I only call her Aeris because it's the name I'm used to.

Either way, it's still awesome to see Aeris/Aerith kick Ruby Weapon's ass.

Earith was origginaly in first Japanese version, then they changed it to Aerith just for fonetic reasons, and in the european and american versions was Aeris. It's on square's official pages, look it up.
