I heard this was fake: they're using magnets that were placed in the fish.

I've also read that this is illegal, if it was done with magnets instead of "training" (a rather strange form of animal cruelty)

That's nonsense. Australian researchers determined years ago that the poor fish memory is nothing but a myth. Studies show they have excellent memories, better than normal domestic pets like dogs and cats.
