IMO the top5 performances of Woodstock: 1. Santana, Soul Sacrifice, 2. Sly and the Family Stone, I wanna take you higher, 3. Ten Years After, I'm going home, 4. Jimi Hendrix, Villanova Junction, 5. The Who, Naked Eye (Towhnsend's unbelievable solo closing My Generation).
I am in the Uk .. husband introduced me to him. Have seen Santana at least 10 times. Fabulous artist, tight band, and really generous to his guest performers. A man that perforns from within his heart (a man with an enormous talent and a much bigger heart). Google him at his web site dot com)
I remember the Michael Wadleigh film of Woodstock '69 well in its theatrical reissues during the 70s...Grew up during the 70s. The clip of the sheep-humping hippie is PRICELESS during this jam (!)
Santana thinks his guitar is some electrifying snake and clearly the drummer and the keyboard player are tripping on some very powerful stuff. They all are yet they are playing this amazing music.
With maybe the whole band on acid and/or mescaline the results were bound to go a long way in one direction or the other. As fortune would have it, Santana was transcendent that day in 1969...Truly connected to the invisible world. And when I think of Michael Shrieve's drumming one word floats to the top: POISE! 19 years old, tripping balls, and in front of possibly half a million people. Plus, the band was thrown out on stage hours early and without rehearsal or sound-check.
I should also make the point that Woodstock serves as a showcase for good bands who suffered through awful sets under the influence of hallucinogens. The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane, among others.
Im so glad I was a kid back then when music was music. It wasnt about light shows, dancers, fireworks, it was music. Because back then they could realy play and really sing. The drummer here was only 19, and Santana was on 2 hits of Mescalin when they played this. Fuckin great, plain and simple. The shit today couldnt carry their jock sweat.
Best performance in Woodstock hands down, and I'm not afraid to say even better than Hendrix. Excellent Musicians who seem to play bettter stoned and an audience who are outta their minds. HAHAHAHAHA
I was 20 years old in 1969 when the woodstock concert happened. I had heard a lot of good music up until that point, but this song has to be the best jam i have heard before or after. the drummer has to be one of the best ever. The drum solo has to go down in the records as one of the best ever. Love Santana doing anything, but this version of soul sacrifice has got to stand out as thier best song ever, bar none!!!
why can't america be like this again? where we have masses upon masses showing up for 3days of love and peace...when will the destruction of the present stop and go back to the peaceful ways of our past?...america was done for after JFK <--- our last real president.
Con este tema la música llego al paroxismo, cuando la escucho y veo ese estado de trance en el que se encuentran los interpretes y el publico los vellos de mi espalda se erizan. realmente de lo mejor.
Maybe the best live rock video ever and the highlight of Woodstock IMO. There's so much here. Grace Slick and Joplin on stage digging the hell out of what they're seeing, Bill Graham chatting with Gregg Rolie, Mike Shrieve's shiner (alledgedly from a bar fight the night before) and his EPIC performance, Mike Brown's bass driving the beat not to mention Carlos absolutely playing at another level after the drum solo. And dig the dude playing the soup cans and really so much more.
Hard to tell exactly but I think GS is to the right of the band facing the crowd standing near the amps. I definitely know she was on stage because of an iterview where she talked about it. You can clearly see Janis starting at about 8:40 behind an amp at Mike Shrieve's right shoulder.
