i run long distance. i had tendonitis on my left foot about a month ago. it healed up, and now i'm feeling the same pain on the right ankle. could this be simply because of overuse? what can i do to prevent getting this again? i just want to run.
You can't really purely strengthen the tendon, only the muscle that moves the tendon. Even so, I suppose it is debatable whether strengthening the muscle will realistically prevent reinjury to the tendon. By stretching the tendon by gently turning the foot inward, you can keep it limber and less likely to tear during a sudden inward rolling of the foot. A physical therapist under order of a physician can improve tissue quality even more by mobilizing it and reducing scar tissue.
i have been going to physiotherapy for achilles tendonitis. When i heard of peroneal tendonitis, it sounded like what i had, could anyone confirm?
Its very uncomfortable to point my foot, and painful.
I have a swollen part behind my ankle bone on the outside, which is very painful to put pressure on.
I have no arch, plus Im a dancer so when im on pointe shoes, its very painful and uncomfortable. Ive been wearing inserts for a while and staying off my foot but it isnt helping! what should i do?
If there is concern or debate as to your actual diagnosis or treatment, I advise you to see a foot and ankle specialist for another opinion. The areas behind and to the sides of the ankle have multiple structures that can become injured, and sometimes together. From what you describe, the peroneal tendon could be the culprit in your pain, but injury to the outside fibers of the Achilles tendon and nerve tissue on that side can also cause similar pain.
Now they are asking if I want a walking cast until I see him on July 5th. Does what i have described so far sound like it is going to require surgical intervention possibly? I just am confused as to which option to go with as far as continuing with current course of 'lets see what it does til July 5, or walking cast. I have a boot immobilizer now. Heck I don't even know if it is torn, rupture, subluxated or what. Sigh. Just sick of the pain, time off and swelling. want my normal foot back.
Sorry if you got a different reply from me just now, I did not see the other part of your post last week so I removed what I wrote. I gotta say, your case sounds fairly atypical. Burning pain suggests involvement of the sural nerve. Crepitus to the lateral foot is also unusual, unless there is an accessory bone involved under or within the tendon. Without seeing your foot myself, I don't have much to offer in way of treatment ideas. A 2nd MRI may be helpful, esp. if you are worse.
Part 2 of the reply-I hope your follow-up visit yields a concise treatment course. Don't know if more immobilization will be of particular benefit given your lack of improvement so far. Not to sound unprofessional, but if you are seeing an MD over a DPM for this injury, I really hope he/she is a foot and ankle ortho specialist, as general orthopedists are not always able to be comprehensive when it comes to more specialized and subtle nontrauma ankle/foot pathology. I wish you well.
Thank you for the reply. I contacted my MD and he is not overly concerned and said we will discuss options at next appt July 5. I did have an MRI early on which showed alot of inflammation /edema surrounding tendon. As I mentioned the crepitus is now on lateral aspect of foot radiating to back of my ankle. The burning is now going up the top of the ankle and feels like a blow torch. He states either cast or possible surgery. could the tendon be ruptured?
I am an RN in a trauma unit and was diagnosed with Peroneal tendonitis/tendonosus, and have been off work for 7 weeks now. I have been using a boot with inflateable air chambers, wedges, and have a significant amount of crepitus in the foot, lateral aspect of right foot and constant burning/pain. Any thoughts? The crepitus is getting worse, radiating at times to the rear of the ankle. Am going to start PT, but am not optimistic, why is crepitus getting worse? Thank you
Crepitus is not typical with peroneal tendonitis, and neither is burning pain. Crepitus could indicate a subluxation of the peroneal tendons as they snap over the back of the ankle bone, and this could be due to a fracture of the ridge in that bone that forms a groove where the tendons pull through. Burning may indicate inflammation of the sural nerve, which can sometimes occur with peroneal tendonitis or on its own. An MRI might be a good idea before starting physical therapy.

I was recently told that I am over-pronating and as a result my ankle, on the outside, becomes sore on the "sticky out" bone, i stopped (playing basketball) as soon as i felt the pain, and is it fixable? and if so, how long does it generally take to fix?
I am not sure what bone you are referring to exactly. If you are referring to the outer part of the ankle, what is called the fibular malleolus, then the pain may or may not have to do with over pronating. Pronation can compress the foot against the outer ankle and lead to pain that is felt in that general vicinity. However, if the pain is more directly to the outside of the bone it may be related more to an ankle ligament injury or problem with the tip of the bone itself.
Treatment can vary. A prescription orthotic can reduce the pronation and solve the compression issue, although some people need surgical correction from time to time. If your pain is related to an actual ankle problem, treatment can really vary depending on the underlying cause. See a podiatrist/foot specialist for an evaluation and correct treatment course.
I think this is my condition. ive recently done quite a bit of cross country running for the first time....but my ankle isnt painful unless i press on the tendon itself, i can walk fine, and up until a few days ago i could run fine, but ive told myself to take a few days rest as it doesnt seem to be healing. I dont think its a serious condition at the moment, how long do u think it should take to heal??
Healing really depends on the severity of the injury and your foot structure. If you are not really actively treating it, and are simply resting from running, it may take awhile. Remember, even walking can strain the tendon, and a few days rest will not likely be enough. See a foot specialist for a better treatment plan based on an exam of your ankle and foot, as this condition could drag on for awhile if not treated properly.

You should see a foot specialist. Different tendons have different bracing and treatment needs.
