@visheshdhillon Because when British immigrants came to the US in the mid to late 1800's & brought the sport with them, thats what they called it. At the time, at least 3 different sports were known as football. The sport in question was officially called association football. To differentiate from other footballs, they took out the "soc" out of association and placed "er" after it. SOC-ER.
