Great stuff. You have a fantastic voice mate, similar to the great Ronnie Drew (RIP). I really love this song, it has such a wonderful melody. One minor criticism. The guitar sounds a bit off. Did you record it before on a different track? I'd get someone to play along with you or if you play, just play while you sing...still it's no big deal, the whole thing sounds pretty damn decent!!! Thanks for posting!
Like Pyro8 I love your interpretation, it gives me cold sense in my belly, like if it was Ewan who sing it... Just dislike the electronic impression of the music in "fond de chanson".
an old hidden classic i used to sing a lot...being from limerick myself was often wondering why this song is rare..its brilliant..maybe thats where it is best kept..beautiful version
Thanks a million. When I play this song live people always ask me 'why' they haven't heard it before that much - it deserves better versions than mine, but your appreciation pleases me very much.
Part of it may be effects (sounds like slight reverb on your voice), but certainly not entirely.
I don't like how many songs are sung too slow, yet technically brilliant(very often Celtic woman and that kind). Yet this proves that with voice which has character (or balls :-)), it can sound very well too!
Excellent version, well sung. I agree, you very rarely hear this song. I am from Limerick originally but now live in San Francisco, I remember a local band used to play it in bars in Limerick. Great voice, and keep up the good work
I heard this years ago by the Dubliners - a little faster, but not capturing the minors in the tune as well as you do. I think I'll add this to my own repertoire!
The lyrics are in the box and there are only two chords in the whole thing. I use a Capo pretty high up (in the 5th box) but it sort of depends how much I had to drink the night before. The chords are just alternating Am/G. Nothing more to it. Hope this helps!
Wow how did I miss this little gem. Well done it really perfect for my mood at the moment. Just got a job in RTE, so am more busy than normal and need something to kick back to.
you see im english but im distantly irish in one sense, Mcloughlin the surname. Maybe you could do a cover off whiskey in a jar by thin lizzy make it your own and in a style

wow this is great man you got a damn good voice I'm so used to the pogues version and hearing this one done with class and such subtlety. it's great can't stop listening to it five stars my friend. This version really soothes me when I listen to it. i can close my eyes and feel real peaceful thanks man great song! you got mp3's of this? if so i would love to have it.
Hi there, thanks for the kind words - cheered me up this morning. If you want sound files of any of my songs, just send me an email address and I'll email you!
I cannot stop listening to this video, your voice has such a rich tone, not to mention the fact that the song truly holds its own. Are you playing the guitar track also?
To answer your question, I do indeed play guitar on the track. The chords for the guitar are extremely simple though (2 chords). I recorded everything first and then tried to do the vocals 'live' for the video.
Very much enjoyed your version of it. I think it has a more haunting quality that I like more than others I've heard. You have a good voice that is well suited to the song.
I'm south of you in Nürnberg - I'm normally in Dresden once a year for one reason or another - I'll send you a message the next time and if you're around, we can maybe organise a pint if you're up for it! Take care.
excellent.......you can hear the perfectness of soul in your heart and your tones and accents are excellent....from a bray man in germany to you!thank the gods there are more generations of us irish that have what it takes to be excellent!i thought that skill of heart and soul was lost in the celtic tiger economy.....at least some of us escaped to save the best for last!hope you are rich from your excellence!till next time!go raibh maith agat
I'm afraid I dont understand the term 'clinker song' but I wholeheartedly disagree. I still stand by what I said in the first comment. This is 'eurovision export' Irish music, instead of the true stuff
but the only thing plastic about this performance is the fact that the musician declares in the description that he has not yet been seen by youtube members in any of his music vids--so he was probably not giving the purness of singing a fair go because he was concentrating on giving him what his fans wanted--but i will tell you as a musician and singer-this performance was unique
With all due respect...rubbish! I used to sing this song over 30 yrs. ago in the very many pubs I frequented at that time!! The only difference was I sang..her being from the mountains, her stockings were white and I'd love to be tightenin' her garters!!
That song's been around for as long as I can remember. This arrangement does make it sound more commercial I'll agree, but there's room for all sorts.
Wow I absolutely love this song-and your version is fantastic. I have had many good holidays in Ireland and this song takes my thoughts back there. Thankyou for posting.
Nicely done man. Honestly I find the song is better minus any instruments and if done a little quicker, but you've given it your own style, which is great. Cheers!
Thanks for taking the time to watch - one or two people I know have also said something similar (as they know the Dubliners version) but there you go. I am not (alas) The Dubliners (or Shane!). Happy New Year!
A real achievement in memorization, Kevin. I could never remember so many lines or sing it straight in one take without tripping up somewhere. It's both acting and singing (like opera!). Nice job, great sound, deep song.
If you can keep a secret, it was not the first take and ... between verses I did sneak a look at some notes that were (by chance) lying idly by. Out secret, okay?
WOW Kevin, This Is AMAZING! It's great to hear this song again, reminds me of when I would go visiting my dads frinds and music such as this would be played. Your Vocals are amazing 5* and had to add this to my fav's.
