things worked out well for him, he made his name and reputation with the wec and those exciting fights he had towards the end of 2009 into 2010< while the tuf season 9 cast tread water and now we fast forward to modern day ufc, he headlines agains frankie edgar and wins the world title.
This probably got him his WEC deal, considering both were owned by Zuffa at the time. I think it was better in the long run, though, he got to slowly build himself with fights against a similar level of opposition there with the likes of Cerrone, Pettis, Roller, and Njokuani.

Ben wasn't picked because he would have destroyed everybody on the UK or the US team. UFC stacked that season with more motivated UK fighters to bring in the viewers from both countries.
Good for Ben. TUF is more of a curse than a blessing for most fighters. They get the spotlight before their skills equal their fame and they don't feel compelled to train as hard. The hard road is usually the best road.
The show rarely picks top level fighters any more. They base a lot of it on personality, but the last few seasons lack that as well. BENDO's story really is that of an underdog. This guy brought the fight and like they say, "the Cream always rises to the top." Now, they're saying "And the NEW UFC Lightweight Champion of the World!.... Benson "Smooth" Henderson!"

Im gathering the people that reviewed the tapes thought he was perhaps to expierenced for the show but thought it'd be wise to hold onto him. And It obviously was the right idea cus hes turned out pretty good!
