@CharlitaCharlota There's no set arc to these characters. Each of the songs kind of tell the story in itself. What's good about this show is you can take each song and it'll still make sense on its own. But, if you're doing the show, make sure that the songs that you give to each character don't contradict each other. I did the show a few years ago (i directed it and played Man 1/Boy With Dreams) and it's one of my fondest memories EVER.

@vicki16music it's a song cycle which means it's a series of unconnected songs that usually have similar themes it's a popular things for composers who don't have a complete show to put on but i bunch of great separate songs they want to showcase. Jason Robert Brown did the same thing with songs for a new world

i think that's the best thing about pasek and paul, that whatever your personal paradigm or perspective is, you take different things from their songs. everyone sees it different, and gets something different out of it. and they're just amazing.

She's a really talented singer, though I will say that our musical theatre department did this for their senior recital this year and the girl singing this did a breath taking performance but also used a different performance, she was more desperate and less angry and broke down crying at the end of the song when he left anyway. While the actress here, i don't really know what she was trying to convey in the end...

@Jentlwoman Every time I see this, I think it's heartbreaking. She's not desperate exactly, but she's promising to be perfect for a guy, and that's just not possible. I'm going through the exact same thing.

She's feeling like she's not good enough for him, and that she has to try harder, and if she does, she can make it all okay. But that's not it. He just doesn't want her, and even perfection can't make him stay.

So she'll take the blame, and she'll let him say awful things to her, and she'll let him do anything he wants, and she'll be trying the entire time to be good enough for him. He's wrong, though. He should be crawling back to her.

wow, these composers were obviously hugely influenced by jason robert brown. the chord structures and really rhythmic piano is straight from "songs for a new world," and, lyrically, this whole song is very reminiscent of "the last 5 years," particularly "see, i'm smiling."

that said, what an absolutely gorgeous song, and breathtaking performance. this girl is a gem - what a range of emotion. amazing how much character development can be present in a four-minute song.

I love her performance in this song! I think my favourite parts are when she's not singing (even though her voice is amazing!) For example, right at the end of the song, when she finishes, and goes to sit down... there's SO much emotion there! I also love her movement when she sings "Tell me what to do"... soooo good !
