Well Im american so I guess its natural for me to relate it to my own culture but others may relate space travel to American culture because America beat Russia in the race to the moon so maybe we are seen as the leaders in space exploration. Also I'm pretty sure we devote more money and resources to it than any other single country. I think space travel will take on a more international feel soon though.
