You do realize that shifting when you hit the rev limiter isn't the most efficient or quickest way to set off don't you? Sounds nice if a bit annoying hearing the limiter every time.
the shift light is there for a reason we get it ur 2zz revs to 9. the 2zz-ge does not show toyota and yamaha's true tuning capability. if you think about it about 3 years new than the b16a found in type r civics producing 182 hp. The jap spec version 2zz produces 187 hp. 2zz-ge was made with cost in mind and not true performance. take a look at 4th and 5th gen 3S-GE beams found in the SS-III celica and Altezza RS200. Those are the strongest 4 cylinders engines toyota has ever built.
alot of other cars company makes vtec but under differnt name. Honda is the first to achives the best one' honda been since 1990 with the B16a and b16a1. IM a Honda fan all the way. but toyota when the lift pops it sounds like a b16 close to a K-series. But it doesnt hit as hard as honda motor' I love Allmotor fck boost but i would boost tho' Like i was saying everyone should give props to all the motor its a work or art. We should all hate on the V8's and Fords' thanks [:
stfu both of u there both good engines u do bring up good points but they are good in both ways they have there highs nd lows they also have potential nd it all comes down to the driver in the end in my opinion . nd no engine is better none u cant say tht
The K20A is a much more reliable motor, as well it makes much more power (220 HP for a K20A), Honda motors have the Highest, Power Per L N/A Motors of any car under $100,000. Not to say the 2ZZ-GE is a bad motor it was co developed with Yamaha, and Lotus Uses it for the Elise, and Exige cars. I just feel that when it comes to small High Revving I-4's no one can touch Honda, all of the major innovations for I-4's (VVT, individual coil packs) Honda did it first or created it.
I'm not trying to say Honda's are bad, I think they're great engines too. But the jdm 2zz makes 200hp out of a 1.8 and k20 does make 220hp but it's a 2.0. Coil over plugs have been in production since the late 80's on BMW's so I wouldn't say Honda created it just because it's on a 4 cyl or whatever. 2zz was the first engine to have "continuous" variable valve timing with lift and it came out in 98. The K20 didn't come out till a year or 2 after that. Basically the 2zz and k20 are the same.
when someone makes +300whp all motor out of a 2zz come back, im Toyota all the way always have been. The K-series engine is just ridiculous tho. Its nearly impossible to port a B-series head to make it flow as well as a stock K20A2 head. To give you an idea the B16A2 1.6L makes 180hp n/a in stock trim. Honda comes from making motorcycle engines so its only natural that there technology carries over into make engines high specific outputs and volumetric efficiencies
Honda just has way too many engines making about the same power. b16-150-170. B18 170-200hp k20-200hp. Toyota makes 1 engine that competes with most Honda engines and gets flamed on. And it's not that Toyota can't make engines... They just don't care. When they do try they make great engines. Atlantic 4age 1.6L makes 250hp. 2zzge 1.8 easily makes 200whp. And in 96 they had the beams 3sge 2.0 making 200hp and 210hp blacktop factory. IAnd toyota is just as reliable as Honda.
haha I was just talking about 4age today and how they last for a 200 Mi's then they need a full rebuild, but you do have a point about to many motor's, but really when was the last time that Toyoda made a real sports car, they just don't do anything exciting any more. BTW the F20C 240 HP, 9000RPM, and you can drive it for ever, and never have a problem.
No I totally agree with you. Toyota does not care about performance and especially now. But like I said before, Honda's have awesome engines but the 2zzge Is also an awesome engine.
I never thought I was bad, just I feel that Honda has more to offer, but when you think about it I-4's is all they make pretty much, so they would have more to offer.
@mrhiguy The K20 is leaps and bounds ahead of the 2ZZGE though. Toyota hasn't made a performance motor in a long time. The LFA/ISF doesn't count, neither of them are sports cars.
@mrhiguy I can do that. The K20A has a much better flowing head than the 2ZZ-GE, hands down. A ported and polished 2ZZ-GE can almost match what a stock K20 flows. The K20 also has more displacement. K20 works with ITBs, and has more NA power potential. A Hondata on a K20 can get a lot of extra horsepower out of it (~240 total) where as the 2ZZ-GE can't get much extra power without serious work to it. The K20 is simply a better motor, due to newer technology.
@Cordius the 944s is 180 HP at 6900 rpm. power isnt everything. at a roll, a 944s would beat a stock 2zzge. and its mated to a 5spd. not 6 like the honda and toyota. and this was made in 87 so its 23 years old.
@MangoSmoothie16 Where the hell do you find 180 HP? There's no such thing. Not in a 944. The 944 Turbo was 220. The N/A was 150. Where are you getting your information?
@Cordius im talking about the 944s. thats the M44/40. go to google, go to porsche 944s specs and its the petting zoo link lol. look on the 87 944s. its actually 188 so I can round to 190. thats 76 hp per liter form 23 year old technology. its really not a better engine now but I have a feeling it will take way more abuse. there is absolutely no plastic except the airbox and intake tube.
@MangoSmoothie16 The 944S is completely different. Besides that, its 10.9:1 compression and is a 2.5 Liter. This is a 1.8, and are also known for reliability. What Toyota could do with a VVTL-i on a 2.5 Liter is a phenomenal idea.
@Cordius i was talking about the 944s the whole time lol. Imagine what porsche could do with a 2.5L now. I bet porsche could top a VVTL-i on toyotasVTEC on hondas. They were one of the first to have 4 valves per cyl. I still love toyotas. I own a tundra. But porsche could top toyota. I mean they do have a concept hybrid that goes over 200 and gets 78mpg. Oh and its faster than the carrera GT around the nurburgring. Lets see a prius do that...
@MangoSmoothie16 In the 1996-2004 Boxsters, the 2.5L H6s put out 201 HP. They haven't gone that far. Don't get me wrong, I like Porsches, but I think they're a little overpriced for their performance in that class. And how the hell are you going to compare a 918 Spyder to a Prius? They were built with completely different intentions. And the Spyder is a concept. Not only that, the 918, if it ever IS produced, is going to cost 10 times that of a Prius.
@Cordius i know lol. I like both. porsche could go farther but it would cost way too much. And they are overpriced new. Not old ones though. Got my 944s for 3K + 2K to fix it and not many 5 grand cars can hang with it.
@seroyer2 you are wrong honda I-4's are not untouchable. Take a look at the 3S-GE Redtop with single VVT-I producing 197hp with 152 ft lb torque, and a 3S-GE Beams Blacktop with dual VVT-I producing 207 hp and 160 ft lb torque. both engines produced in 1998 with more torque than honda's vtec engines. Toyota didn't decided to go with fuel economy cars in 2000, they could of produced a 6th gen 3S-GE with an aluminum block with 217 hp and 165 ft lb torque in 2002 with an intro to the 7th gen celica
@cypress101 would a newer 3s-ge fit into a 91 mr2? and would the cams be compatible with a turbo? I know i gotta build it, but id just like to throw a bottom end at it to keep cost down
You do realize that shifting when you hit the rev limiter isn't the most efficient or quickest way to set off don't you? Sounds nice if a bit annoying hearing the limiter every time.

@Cordius what to know what rapes a K20? An LS, LT or 944 motor whuch is from the 80's.
MangoSmoothie16 1 year ago
@MangoSmoothie16 Yes, but the 944 is turbocharged, and the LS and LT have triple the displacement. Whole different class of motor.
Cordius 1 year ago
@Cordius yes the ls and lt are but the engine in my 944s is a N/A 2.5L 16v 4cyl
MangoSmoothie16 1 year ago
@MangoSmoothie16 Yes, and it's only 150 HP. Out of a 2.5L. Toyota was making in the 180s out of a 1.8. The K20, 200 out of a 2.0. All 100 HP/L.

@MangoSmoothie16 That one link disagrees with EVERY other search result when googling 944 specs. The 2.5L is NOT 188 HP.
