I'll admit I've never known any different, but the line and the station seem a hell of a lot better with Chiltern's investment than they ever did under BR. I enjoy travelling on the Turbos - back then I can imagine going anywhere on those trains with those stations was nothing more than a grimy, unpleasant necessity.
memories, memories ... I can remember travelling into and out of Marylebone in those days. I commute there every weekday now and the changes are stunning. In many ways, it's so much better now - more places to eat, for a start, and the trains don't smell as much as the old slam-door ones did
The slam door DMUs may have growled along with slow accelaration but they were so much better in every other respect. Much better ventilated in summer , the seats were twice as comfortable, there was more foot space and a decent view from most seats . Also there was none of that ridiculous fashion for tinted glass that makes everything outside look gloomy. In fact all coaching stock these days is plastic rubbish by comparison - no wonder people pay £250 or more to ride in Pullman coaches.
@MrGriser The Great Central expresses to Sheffield ('The Master Cutler'), Bradford ('The South Yorkshireman') and Manchester ran from Marylebone in the 1950s. They were withdrawn in 1960 and the through Great Central route north of Aylesbury closed in September 1966
@radioianj You may have seen one of the Chiltern Railways operated commuter trains, or you may have seen one of the now sadly ceased WSMR London-Wrexham trains, both would have been slam-door Inter-City stock hauled by a diesel loco (class 67). If it was a diesel unit that you saw, chances are it was one of the route-learning 'bubble' cars, or possibly you saw the Aylesbury - Princes Risborough shuttle train that is also formed of a 'bubble unit.
@radioianj You may have seen one of the 'Bubble' route-learning diesel cars, or possibly one of the now ceased Wrexham & Shropshire London - Wrexham trains that were formed of locomotive hauled Inter-City slam door stock.
I lived in High Wycombe in the 1970s and the journey to Marylebone was so dull and slow, although the units were all blue then.
45 minutes for a semi-fast, but nearer an hour if it stopped at all stations such as Wembley Hill and Denham Golf Club.
We would try our best to catch a Birmingham service from Paddington, just to avoid this line - that is until the Brum trains were diverted via Reading.
Fantastic video, I'm really feeling the whole British Rail vibe here. It does look very different to today, except the underground station entrance! Nice to hear the proper accent of the man on the tannoy too.
It is old - I filmed this just before the station was 'modernised' and some platforms plus a train shed roof were removed (most of what I filmed was later removed, as what was kept was being refurbished).
As time has shown, that typical govt. inspired BR penny pinching was a mistake, as nowadays this is a busy station with InterCity trains again AND to cope with the number of trains coming here they even had to build more platforms...
Helo city, I am from Argentina and I am fun of olds trains, I would like to say you thank you very much, this video is very good,I dont understand why people who dont like something say: Stupid thing, I think that it is sad. Thank you very much my friend and great regards from Argentina.
well I read his comments and saw that they brought back happy childhood memories.
I filmed this as I realised that in later years the film would be of historical interest. I do not 'love' ancient Roman remains, but still see how they can be of historical interest.
Hi. Loved First gen DMU's when I was kid. used to travel from Exeter to Exmouth on them. Miss that weird noise a lot. thanks for this. I was wondering if there were any still in service anywhere?
3 units exist at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre near Quainton.
An original 1960's Class 122 DMU (like those that operated out of Paddington) is still in service to this very day on the line between Princes Risborough and Aylesbury this is a real working Chiltern Line service so you can still pay money and ride on these marvellous units.
"Video 125" released "Chiltern Take 2" covering a 115 DMU operating from Marylebone to Banbury in late 1989.
So lovely to see this video. I was a Train Driver based at Marylebone Depot from 1982 - 1989 and it brought back so many happy memories of a time when trains were real trains. Some of the happiest days of my Railway career were spent at Marylebone. Do you know if any class 115 DMU's still survive? Many thanks.
Yes, there's a 3-car set at the Barry Island Railway Centre and, I do believe there is another set on the West Somerset Railway. There might also be other surviving Class 115 cars still around but I'm not sure where these are.
Thanks for the reply! In fact, there is a Transport Festival being held at the Barry Island Railway Centre on Saturday June 9 and Sunday June 10. Thought you would like to know!
The master image of the videotape includes a short use of the 'date' facility. So I can be confident that I am correct when I say 6th August 1990.
The media made much hype about the new platforms 5+6, yet seem to forget that there were more than just 4 platforms until the station was erm 'modernised' shortly before railway privatisation.
one of my other videos has some footage inside a class 115 DMU. I think its 'South of Wembley Park' As far as I can recall there is nothing else from Marylebone or inside a 115 - but in addition to the several films already here (from Harrow O T Hill) which show 115's I also have some footage from at least one more station. (Preston Road, I think). I have quite a bit more London / other cities footage to come, but time and hard disk space are the biggest constraints.
Wait, did the date on the video cam say 6 AUGUST 1990?
I was only like five years old then, how I wished I'd been born much earlier to have been able to see all this with my own eyes!

@stormwell yes, that sounds about right - August 1990!

I wonder what year this film was taken? The "original" platform 6 is visible so are the semaphore signals so it must have been before 1992.

Do you have any more footage from Marylebone featuring the old class 115 DMU's? Perhaps the inside of the trains or the old Diesel Maintenance Depot?
Do you sell your videos commercially, ie. is it possible to "buy" any of your clips on DVD or as MPEG's?
