  • i love this tune

  • Well this SHOULD have been a MONSTROUS hit...

Anyway has anybody thought of synching it with Serena Williams in a black leotard etc dancing or maybe playing tennis.

    Could be onto something here.

  • I've got this on vinyl. Well, its in the attic in my mums house in Timperley. It was on a mix tape I used to play in Mum and Dads mini metro when I was 17. Shit times, shit times.

  • The reason this was not picked up for that years world cup is that it was submitted too late.... Apparently.. Has been used many times on the TV since... XRAYDELTAONE!!! Colourbox fans will know who I am

  • Jimmy Hill,Brian Moore, legends for ever!!!Particulary Brian Moore, the man was a God,i will not even put those absolute amateurs from sky in the same setntence,Gray and Keys etc....dirtbags,i love Colourbox!

  • New Order???This is the greatest football track of all time!Ref??? get he Subutteo out NOW!!!!

  • Reminds me of Monday night at the Ritz Ballroom Manchester in the late eighties.

Lot of psycho-billies with big horse-shoe haircuts dancing to this!

  • That's long ago.....I search this song for many years.......Somebody who can help me??

    Thanks

  • @barrysteenmans

    Discogs: /sell/list?release_id=27539&ev=rb

  • You must be brain dead not to like this.

  • ya das stimt - heard about 4AD and persued their releases. heard this track and had to have it. this was one of those songs from musicians you feel happy to hear by coincidental accident. lived in a sonic desert then. KSA. my god this was einer gott verdamm breath of fresh luft. sounded like serioUS pRTY muzak on ze wilsons. den zo also danke to the people that made my speaker cable. it had to deal with the electricity. you should have seen the people bouncing off the walls. t'was so much fun.

  • This great song for the beat rythm recalls to Goldfrapp´s Oh La La

  • i'm not feeling this, but someone just gave me "Baby I Lobe You So" on vinyl. OMG I'd forgotten what an awesome piece of vintage white-boy dub that is... feat Lorita Grahame... baaaaad tune.

  • FFFFFFFFFAAAAANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without doubt the very finest world cup theme EVER!

I have had the 12" since it came out and always wondered who the man was on the cover.

  • @nutster9000

If the picture above is the 12" cover then it's Jimmy Hill, ex-player and commentator.

  • this track is so full of win. Used to be my favorite dance song when it came out. Going to start working on an 8 bit version for a show I have in Philly in Aug. Thanks for posting.

  • ..Nobody really listens to techno... ; )

  • who cares, this still makes me think of football highlights (having a world cup moment)

  • god cant believe ive just found this was watchin a programme right now on the best football anthems and remembered i have this in my loft on 12 inch, sure it was italia 90 it came out, used to blast it all the time that summer.jimmy hill on the front and im sure it was the great bobby robson in his newcastle top on the back .will have to check again . fekin alltime classic thanks for posting.

  • @jonzer8

It was for Mexico 86. Bobby Robson was England manager then, too. Definitely an all-time classic.

  • I love this ..after New Order is the best piece of football inspired music!!

  • I love this and bought it on 7" at the time. As I recall it almost WAS used as the world cup theme but was rejected because the single cover was a photo of Jimmy Hill who was BBC. There you go! It's an absolutely pumping track though and ahead of its time.

  • reminds me re 1986 . I knew some blokes who used to drink Fosters and that Belgian beer and then went nuts watching the football. they loved this music.

The atmospheres the same now, the uk is going football mad !!

  • Love this, think its my favourite instrumental ever thanks for posting

  • @thirstymuse1-totally agree. Showed that 4AD had a sense of humour too. This is a great tune-never failed to have me flinging myself around the dancefloor at many an 'alternative' club. Also that Colourbox album gave me so many more ideas about what music could actually be. Very under-rated. Thanks for putting this up here

  • Brill! Still got the 12" vinyl but unfortunately no longer hav record player so not heard it in ages! Used to love dancin to this down the hacienda - happy daze!

  • this is far superior than new orders effort (that rap!?) and euro 96 3 lions which spawned too many post 96 football fans who wank at the alter of the premiershit!...

perhaps a facebook campaign for englands SA trip!.

  • One of the most uplifting pieces of synth music around....agree thirstymuse1. First heard it in a London club in the 80's..amongst the pap it immediately got my atention. I was already a fan of the 4AD label, but these guys had until that point passed me by.

  • Does anybody remember the b-side of this ? it was philip glass a ; b-d-f# number.

  • yes, i remember it - it was dreadful !!

  • not heard this for some years, thanks for posting!!! good times!!!!

  • Takes me back to Level 8 at Strathclyde Uni. Great days!!

  • I have this 12". I think this should be use in sports.

  • it sounds like a george michael acid trip

  • I hosted a sports radio show when I was in college, and this was our theme. Man, I have not heard this in over 15 years!

  • i used this tune at my girlfriend's fashion show in 91 it rocked the whole room

  • One of the most POWERful tracks ever produced...and that's power with FIVE capital letters!!!

  • Remember Peelie playing it one night and saying 'They really should have used it you know, definitely should have used it.....'

  • this is brilliant. i havent heard this song since it was featured in Granada TVs rugby league programme in 1990. a quite superb instrumental !!!

  • It's easy to imagine this as a soundtrack to the sort of highlights package the tv companies put at the end of the final show in major tournaments.

Plus, at least Colourbox had the balls to admit they like football in1986 when it was socially attractive as rabies.

  • hellooo to flyonthewindscreen... Depeche Mode fan x

  • My mate Tom Bradshaw did me a mix tape and on it was a cut out section from a Janice Long radio show where she was playing her favourite songs of the time! i can even remember Janice saying that she used to put this on to hoover...go Janice! Anyway my mate bought it for me on 12" i think from Our Price or something he had to order it and it got to the store 4 weeks later (see not everything about the modern age is shit!I i am 38 now so just a little too young to hear in the Hacianda! SHAME!

  • Incredible, sends shivers up my spine.

  • ssoooooo ggooooddd!!!

    thanks soooo much for posting!

one of my favorite songs from the 80's!

  • awesome!!

  • Dunno if you all agree but for me this is just the toughest and most sensuous piece of electronica ever. WHY wasn't it actually picked as World Cup Theme, how superb would that have been. New Order E For England, good though it was, sounds pretty damn feeble next to this. Anyone know what happened to Colourbox? I seem to remember they used to fight a lot, Oasis style.

  • Colourbox and AR Kane did the massive "Pump Up The Volume" cut - and then disappeared as a band. There is a little known B side to that single entitled "Anitina, (First Time I See She Dance)"

  • @thirstymuse1 This should be used for the next WC theme.

  • @thirstymuse1

Completely agree. This was done for the 1986 World Cup and the New Order song was for the 1990 one.

  • @thirstymuse1 yeah totally its just relentless and I never tire of hearing this!

  • @thirstymuse1 amen to that I fucking love this

  • @thirstymuse1 The greatest football ever track, words, fail me,i i love NO,way ahead of its time .What a piece of music!!!!!World in motion my bollocks! By the way i love NO. beautifil

  • Always puts a smile on my face and makes me want to dance around the room.

    Cheers for putting this up.

  • All the bands from 4AD were so superb. I couldn't get enough of them and I especially love the memories they evoke.

  • This was one of the tracks that kept me sane during the summer of '86

  • I had this album !

  • Great to know I'm not the only person who remembers this! Always loved this tune - remember it at the Hac, but also end of the night every thursday at the International (on Upper Brook Street)... Happy days

  • Yes mate, a temperance night classic, I can still picture all them birds in doc martens and blue and white stripey tights doing that student boppin about dance...

  • yep! i certainly do ..the Hac on a thursday night

  • still got record yes jackoclarts there still is

  • Someone remix it for 2010 please ?

  • Remix? Nah - just re-release it's perfect as it is!

  • Genialna elektronika !!

  • Tuuuune!!!

  • have just made this my ringtone such good bloody memories my alltime fave song of all time excellent

  • Amazing! I have been looking for this for ages. Ex GF played me this from the Annie Nightingale request show on Radio 1 about 18 years ago. Great find!

  • I don't believe it! There are others out there with taste as well as me!

  • Colourbox reunion !

  • alot more memorable at the club than the soccer was on the pitch

  • Still a glorious tune. C'mon some mediahead be brave..World Cup 2010.

  • Actually, it was considered by ITV, not the BBC. The reason they didn't use it was because of Colourbox insisting Jimmy Hill (the BBC pundit) stayed on the sleeve.

  • *does the swivelly seat dance*

  • Trying to dance to this on the podiums at Temperance/The Hacienda - fuck me...now I'm 41 and still nothing compares...fantastic

  • LOL!!Me too! They used to play it on a Wedsnday also at Zumbar @the Hac!Whoop!!

  • Genius. Also reminds me of mispent youth dancing to this all of 21 years ago. OMG.

  • Used to have this on 7".... REALLY hard to find now.... THANK YOU POSTER and YOUTUBE!!!! (Hard to type 'cos I'm dancin'....)

  • Still great!!

  • Takes me back to my ilspent youth!!

  • On the other side the pic is Robbie Bobson!!!!

  • Mint mint tune, always played on Thursday nights Temperance club at The Hacienda

  • Ah!...the chinular genius of Jimmy Hill!!!
