where the U.S. doesn't have a monarchy (and thank goodness for that), the U.S. has baseball royalty like Lou Gehrig. As a Red Sox fan, it isn't even about teams. Baseball IS nostalgia.
My Dad, Lou Mc Hugh, worked the gun tub aft on the Armed Merchantman SS Lou Gehrig and sailed it from the ship yard to the Salerno landing in 1943. They used to call gunnery drill, afternoon "Batting Practice"...
though i may not like the yanks, but people are people. they all have the same feelings, they can be hurt. Lou Gehrig was truly inspirational to not only yankees fans, but ALL fans around the world
How did all this stuff about the Beetles wind up on this video? This is the greatest moment in sports history and you guys are talking about the Maharishi?
He's a god in some eyes but mostly in all EYES of the world ! He couldnt even hold that gift up cuz he had no engery other then to stand up stright !God bless this 2 ed best ball player of all time ! yup it's the babe !
Where are the Lou Gehrig's of today ? Instead we have rappers and hip hop crap. Wake up America you are being dumbed down. Watch "Freedom To Fascism", on You Tube.
@AwesomeBeatles Back then was no better then today! People like you just remember the good. For you to call all "Hip Hop" crap shows how ignorant you are. Its funny you saying this since your a beetles fan aka.. the first boy band
@ben1ben2ben1 the beatles a "boy band"? really....if them being 1 : male, and 2 : in a band means their a "boy band" then yes. But seen as though thats not the meaning of the term "boy band" NO , they were not the first boy band. They were actually musicians , who were friends and made a band. Not a bunch of hand picked teen heart-throbs who spend as much time picking out clothes and doing their hair as they do dancing AND NOT PLAYING INSTRUMENTS.
@perf5paul They appealed to the young teenage girls and in there early days they played simple songs with simple lyrics and a catchy tune. They wernt like backstreet boy "boy bandish" but they were definitely the first "boy band". And didnt The CEO of there record company replace Pete Best with Ringo? Replacing a band member to become more marketable is very "boy band" like
@ben1ben2ben1 best was dropped by the band members cause he sucked ! not by epstein or the record company. Appealing to teenage girls? thats got nothing to do with anything. playing simple songs? probably because it was the begining of rock and roll and the times back then were sweet and innocent. Look up the term boy band on wiki. the definition is : ALL SINGING , ALL DANCING , CREATED BY TALENT MANAGERS OR RECORD PRODUCERS. fail!
@perf5paul John, Paul and George HAND PICKED Best to be in the beetles! When they got sighed by George Martin he and Brian Epstein (manager) decided to kick Best out. Its funny you mention wiki because the Beetles are actually an example wiki used as one of the first boy bands HAHA
@ben1ben2ben1 (wiki) "Although not a manufactured band, the beatles set a precedent for boy bands to follow", that doesnt make them a boy band. And NO, Martin wanted a session drummer for recordings (cause Best was shit, like i said before) and George and Paul (who didnt like Best) then decided to boot him. So yes John Paul and George did pick him (at 14-16 how many drummers did you know) but they also kicked him out. And at least I know how to spell the beatles, not the beetles. EPIC FAIL!
@perf5paul They may not have fit the EXACT description (and they dont not fit it since the description is very loses) but they WERE a "boy ban"! Spelling "The Beatles" "the Beetles" is an epic fail? Your 34 and you still say EPIC FAIL? Ringo was a shitty drummer too. They didnt even let him play the drums on "Love Me Do" and made him play the tambourine. But he fit the groups image. Like it or not the beatles started out as a boy band
@ben1ben2ben1 Im sorry I didnt realise I couldnt say "epic fail", shit sorry bout that........ I dont care if the Maharishi played drums on "love me do", that has nothing to do with why Best was dropped. Much like the rest of your arguements - pointless
2:07 video: portion from baseball documentary about the Farewell Speech of Lou Gehrig on July 4, 1939; speech excerpt at 1:07
"For the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break... Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. ...that I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for. Thank you."
a man's man. for real. My mother had this disease and it's a mother fucker. For him to say that in the face of such coming agony shows he was a man of immesurable character. An example to us all.
You clowns, don't you know they showed the film like this for effect. Lou was the original Iron Man. He inspires me every day. His consecutive game streak of 2,130 games was broken by Cal Ripken. He would have kept going a lot longer if the disease had not forced him to stop playing. I have worked 12 years without a sick day. Cal and Lou are my idols
Someone asked me today why I love baseball so much. This is my only humble example: Lou Gherig was the epitome of class, true humility, and died a thankful man to have played a sport he loved so. Lou Gherig, a true American hero!
The best thing about sports mirrors the best things in life...perseverance, humility, class, and compassion. These are things that go beyond the stats and highlights. As great as he was, his friend Babe Ruth, took most of the spotlight. I think we all can relate to that on some level. Just keep chugging away. Be the best person you can be even if others don't appreciate it as much as you think they should. When the moment of truth comes, you'll be ready. That's what Lou Gehrig taught me.
i might have been born in 1988,but he has been and will always be my favorite baseball player of all time...cant help but get choked up any time i see or hear this speech...he was a true professional and if there is such a list,he might be the greatest all time under appreciated player,i feel he does not get enough respect amongst baseball history, but playing along side babe ruth will help take some light off ones sun
Lou Gehrig, my favorite ball player of all time. My grandfather died of the same disease 7 years ago and shared the same characteristics, gratitude, perseverence and just flat out humbleness. This also reminds me of my baseball coach who passed this year, a long time Yankee fan and more than a coach, a friend and a mentor. Thanks for posting this. And thank you Grandad and Ross, I miss both of you so much.
@boopboopeedo i understand. but i dont understand the words say it between (0:06 and 0:08)and (0:45 and 0:47 )please would you write it in the screen...thanks
