Idiots above with thumbs up are so stupid not to see the advantage of SSDs. Its not only boot times that increase. Its also the speed of applications that increase in speed. Compare and SSD to an HDD in load times for programs such as Microsoft Office and popular games such as World of Warcraft and you'll see that the SSD wipes the floor with the HDD, all the time. Windows 7 increases the speed of the SSD even more with TRIM support.
I've worked with those newfangled SSD Macs at my student computing support job and if memory serves, they run applications slower than your standard HDD Macs. I doubt any SDD storage product would run audio and visual as fast as a SATA II. Maybe one day they will optimize performance but in actuality, I have my doubts that any current SDD out performs top of the line HDDs in performance. All this video proves is SDD boots WinXP faster--which is not a sign of its overall performance with apps.
You meant to say "everything except storage capacity to cost ratio". A 1TB SSD costs over 2 grand. A comparable HDD is around $100. There is also the issue of limited write cycles on SSDs. HDDs may be more mechanically fragile, but the much cheaper price and the relatively stable function makes them a better purchase. If you're going for an SSD, keep it around 160GB and use it as an OS drive with a HDD to store your data. Unless you can afford a $5000 build and back up religiously.
Doubt all you want, until you test them yourself, or trust the reviews that have been posted, your opinion is nothing but conjecture.
I know my 8xOCZ Vertex RAID 0 flies, and that's good enough for me. I read the review's and saw the test data. Even VelociRaptor doesn't compare, especially in an array.
I see the future (not the far future) but there will probably be a balance using a ssd to store the operating system and programs and a hard for documents and large file archives. I already use dual hard drives similar to this setup and it make a huge difference to swap the os one out. It makes sense its just a matter of cost right now.
if you have a pc you need linux or xp nowadays, but for a laptop, I'd go ubuntu or gentoo. Less use of ram for simple op procedures and much more stable and reliable for almost any proggy out there, including windows games (harder to get drivers such as for video cards to work for me, but worth it once you do).
space is being upped but the price is still outrageous. If there's one thing slowing down SSD adoption it's the price. I'd love to have an SSD in my gaming desktop but the price per Gig is just too much. I'll stick with Raptor's in RAID 0 for now... And with technology today, we shouldn't have old HDD capacities. And the speed difference is negligible. Only advantage is much improved reliability, and a negligible rise in speed. Write times are pathetic compared to HDD's.
You're right, we may see wide spread adoption soon once the technology becomes main-stream and doesn't cost so much. I'm surprised HDD's haven't become inferior years ago, it's sad it's the only moving part left, so delicate. Their much more prone to breaking than any other media storage. All I was saying in my previous comment is SSD isn't a "finished" product for gaming desktop's. For laptops it seems great right now, but since I use desktops for gaming I care most about speed. RAID 0 FTW!
...And I have yet to see a faster SSD than my state-of-the-art Seagate 7.2K 7200.11. Plus HHD's are very reliable if they are kept at a consistent temperature and are cooled well. Most people neglect their HHD's thinking they need little to no cooling at all when I liquid cool mine since I care much about my data. I've been using computers for more than 10 years which may not be much but I have yet to have a HDD of mine to fail on me. In fact, my good ol' Windows ME comp in my closet still works
Why is everyone hating on the SSD. It is the future of drives, that much is obvious. Everything is expensive when it's new. Seriously all of you are just jealous.

idiot. macs are more expensive because macs come with the iLife suite and all other applications that PC's dont. oh and have you seen the stability of the operating system? better product = higher cost.
Sorry, i meant locked to platform. OSX has a built in emulator for unix and windows applications, while windows don't even support foreign file systems. (ext3, raiserfs, hfs+, etc.)
look up the Mtron SSD drives, specifically, the 7000 pro series. I'm assuming the SSD featured in this video was a cheaper one, like Samsung. The Mtron is much faster and more spendy.
right now its just for bragging rights man, its like this with every piece of consumer technology, come thanksgiving this year ssd will be cheap enough for every day people to buy it. ps, don't think of it as 10 seconds, think of it as improving read speed of your computer by 30+%, which can add up to a lot over time

I wonder what would be faster Windows 7 on a SSD and Ubuntu 10.04 on a HDD

not impressive.... My macbook pro boots Win Xp in 32 seconds!!!
early 2008, 2,6ghz c2d, orig. 7200 rpm Hitatchi HDD, 4gb ram
honussa 2 years ago
You realize:
A) That was less that 32 seconds.
B) The specs on those two laptops are significantly lower than your macbook.

Still a bit quicker but for the price of these ssd drives err its not worth it at least for the moment no.

they seem to only be about 2X the speed of a regular hard drive. i'm sure they will get faster though.

too bad ssd have limited space

They do not have 'limited space'. The limit is being upped each month, just like with older type drives.

No they are not. You are probably unaware of the (writing) specs of MemoRight and Mtron SSD's.
HDD's are a sad excuse for a storage medium. Mark my words. They'll be gone sooner than you think.

iLife and Leopard both cost about $250 if you buy them separately. Its the hardware they overcharge for. Which isn't worth it.
XP>OSX because you can do much more, and it is every bit as stable. (never crashed on me)
therealsuperhobo 3 years ago 3
I'm no mac user but i know OSX is not as locked as windows is. Personally i prefere Gentoo Linux; free, fast, safe, reliable, stable and open source.
tedwik 3 years ago
"...OSX is not as locked as windows is."
Really? How do you come to that conclusion?
The majority of Windows' options and settings can be accessed with the GUI. On OSX, you need to use Applescript just to view hidden files.
therealsuperhobo 3 years ago
Sorry, i meant locked to platform. OSX has a built in emulator for unix and windows applications, while windows don't even support foreign file systems. (ext3, raiserfs, hfs+, etc.)
tedwik 3 years ago
Sorry but you're misinformed:
There's Explore2fs (a win32 app to explore etx2 and ext3) and rfstool (ReiserFS for Windows) and there are many others. All free.
Meowbay 3 years ago
Yes sure, I use these often myself. I owe a big thanks for who ever coded those, because Micro$oft sure wouldn't.
tedwik 3 years ago
Apple Mac wouldn't either. They just use open source or GNU software to access other types of FS. Apple would NEVER code it themselves.
