Mesmeric what an amazing performance, I had no idea about this first tour in US.
unfortunately Sunset does seem to require a name as the star just because of the size of original production for what really is just a main cast of 5 or so. (I saw Betty Buckley in london)
even for the revival we've just had which starred Kathryn Evans(who is superb), was tiny but very arty didnt really run cause it needed a big name.
If its any consolation Petula Clark closed the london pretty quickly ...!
This is the scene from the musical that ruins the same scene from the movie. In the movie- which admittedly was written to be more bittersweet than dramatic- her reaction to the spotlight is more "oh, okay" and it's just a device to get other characters to notice her. In the musical when the spotlight hits her for the first time in 20 years her reaction is a combination of 'fountain of youth' and orgasm.
Linda's a treasure! There's a number of bitchy Petula groupies who'd want this video to be wiped off the face of the earth! You know they keep reporting my Linda Balgord videos? Bitter much? LOL.
Only a stupid person can't see this woman is a great performer and a TRUE star. She is one of the best surprises i had recently. Thanks again, HOS, for posting these amazing videos.
Yes, those two pretty much defined the role on stage! Just goes to show you that in order to find the "best" Norma, one needs to look pas the "name" and bitchy persona.
Awesome, fantastic performance- great close up clip.Miss Balgord shows Petula how this role should be sung and played.Lindas tour should have triumphed over Petulas abysmal offering
Simply stunning rendition of this classic song. I think that she captured normas expressions and passion that not alot of people understand about the state in which the character is at, at this point in the show. At the point of 9:38 she absolutley made that greatest expression which made me think that she was truely norma desmond and breathing that through every word sung. Thank you very much for sharing this splendid piece of footage.
Im in love with her because of her facial expressions & her ability of this character! She is so strong & so deep. Doesnt loose character one bit!

Very good, but I think far too young to really convince as a 50 year old!

@dametrot True, but then she plagued the US Tour circuit and knocked poor Linda into obscurity.

This is my favorite show tune. This lady nails it! Not only is she talented, but beautiful. Even that hideous 1092's make up can't hide her beauty!

I heard that Close wasn't the easiest person to work with. True?
orioletrail 2 years ago
She was helluva lot easier than La LuPone.

So true. Both gave very different performances, but both are of equal power and the ability to haunt the audience for weeks...

shes really good, and perfect for the role, but i cant really see her as Mama Rose, shes operatic, not really right for the old songs, right...

I am a severe critic of this song, I adore this song. Once again, Linda Balgord has proven as to why she is my second favorite Norma Desmond!

Remind me who you're number one is? Wasn't it Diahann Carroll or Helen Schneider?
