  • Appears to be the LP version that has been dubbed to a concert.

  • I dont know much about this band, but ive known this song sonce i was a kid. First time i have seen this music video and all i can say is that the lead plays that guitar like he was born with it in his hands.

  • Mark knopfler, Amazing and innovative guitar player.

  • I'm not a big fan of classic rock but you have to be crazy not to like/love this song.

  • One of my all time favorites.

  • you cut out the closing solo.... you suck!

  • @apathy74 Or you can learn how to read descriptions?

  • @jstaser87 Yeah, I was a bit drunk lol

  • what a jam

  • 183 people hit the wrong button.

  • I wish music was still made like this with feeling over the thought of having to make money

  • This was a time where you played great music, and it didn't matter how much of a model you where..... When rock and roll's style was what you played and how well you rocked.....

  • The best instrumental among the best.

  • En mi humilde opinion, uno de los mejores......recuerdos de Lima -Peru. I love this song...Thank you.

  • i have to agree with the song description, this is considered one of the best rock songs ever.

  • Loved this song from day one.

  • I think i like it in 240

  • whats the point of disliking this? you want everyone to think youre a fuckin moron?

  • Still one of the best

  • @ everyone complaining about the lack of solo plz read the info...

  • Yo, you totally cut it before the kick ass solo!

  • Love this song!

  • I must say for the record that this version is good; However, the version they did at LIVE AID really kicked ass. No wonder Princess Diana loved this band.

  • Almost all music today sucks. That's because people buy music that sucks and requires no skills to create. People buy that stuff, so more people make it, it's a vicious cycle. There's no incentive to be an artist anymore, or to think of music as the result of good ideas and hard work. It's almost all shit. There is some good stuff out there still, and most of it's hiding. That's because the good musicians have almost all faded away, and handful that are good today get no respect from the masses.

  • This video is just like the damn radio version.....

it's fades out right before the best part of the song.

  • The genre of this music is "Dadrock".

  • @Whayleejay "dadrock" starts making alot of sense once you turn 12 or 13. i lament the likelihood that you are older and simply never understood.

  • @illegalmusic3 I also wail, mourn, and rip my garments over his misinterpretation

  • I'M 26 AND I LIKE MUSIC!

  • Started playin without a pick about 2 months ago.. haven't held one ever since :) it's alot more fun to play without one

  • seriously. I would give all this technology away to live in the 70's or 80's. Back in those days it was easy goin and the good music was on top.

  • im 15 and its unfortunate i grew up in a generation of very forgettable music....im jealous of my dad he had led zeppelin, dire straits, AC/DC. elo, tesla etc. ind my generation is remembered for justin bieber, katy perry, and.........lady gaga. that's what my generation has to offer and i am ashamed.

  • great song! i love it!!! @kjpurkapile i hear ya! i'm 14 and i HATE this rap crap, i don't like it. none of it has a beat like this.

  • i love this song because its real music, played by real musicans, played the way it should be. i'm seveteen and i have good taste if you do too then thumbs up

  • Love that sound :)

  • Ah yeah, reminds me of my pops cranking music to wake us up for breakfast weekend mornings.

  • This song is a great example of how talented musicians were back in the day, and how brilliant the music was.

  • I heard this song at work today for the first time, nice nice.

  • Why the hell did this cut before the solo? This video should be flagged as offensive.

  • @KurtVachon That's the way it is. Videos weren't rare in the 1970's and 1980's. It's just that in the US it was easier to just invite the actual band to play on your TV show. If you happened to be in the third world, let's say Columbia South America, then it was easier for record companies to show this video instead of dragging the actual group into a profitless wasteland.

  • @KurtVachon

at least they gave it a decent fade out. ;)

  • @KurtVachon he didnt cut the video, it was recorded like this. they cut the original music video and early radio versions short because they thought the song was too long

  • I love this song!

  • Absolutly, I am 45 and this has had me going since I was 13 Great all around,Taught my world as guitar player Rhtyhm Beautiful

  • I've listened to a lot of music now for a good number of years and I never realized how great of a guitar player Knopfler was/is. The guy rocked that song!!!

  • Simplemente perfecto...

  • how in the hell do you cut off the last solo?

  • he dresses like i do and its 2011....sweet

  • 180 people are Bieber fans.

  • what, the best part with the solo is left out :(

  • One of the best songs I've ever heard. You don't hear this quality of music anymore nowadays. Rock on!

  • My favorite song involving Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler himself.

  • One of my all time favorite songs and defenately all time favorite guitar solos!

  • one of my favorite songs

  • STOP BRAGGING ABOUT YOUR AGE. YOU ARE NOT ANY COOLER FOR IT. sorry that nobody loves you at school because you listen to dire straits.

i liked this song when i was a baby, cos my parents had all of dire straits' CDs. get on my level.

    see, seems pretty stupid, yeah?

  • The best songwriter, singer,Lead guitarist and Finger picker to ever walk the face of the earth, the moon, the sun and Uranus /discussion

  • To quote Keith Richards, "If you don't know the blues... there's no point in picking up the guitar and playing rock and roll or any other form of popular music." Knopfler, Clapton and most other guitar greats started with blues music.

  • Wheres the end of the solo??? rip off!!!

  • @kobebryant2455 read the description

  • What a great song ... Age 16 listening here.

  • That guitar solo is one of the best pieces of music ever

  • awesomeness and timelessness.

  • When He says "Guitar George" I always think George Harrison...Anyone else?

  • BOOOOOO!!! Needs to be the long version to include Knopfler's solo at the end! One of the best solos in rock IMO !!!!

  • What the hell you cut out the end solo? Mark Knopfler's awesome work is not only during the song but also on the end of the song! and you end the song before the end solo!

  • @jameszen2020 this was the radio-cut version. they didnt include the last solo on this version to save time

  • one of the best song ever with a terrific guitar solo

  • The 80s still rock! Why do you think advertisers use the music from this period more than any other decade?

  • god lets make a little trade give us Jimmie Hendrix and we will give you Lil Wayne and Kanya west

give us linen and we will give you bieber

give us pink Floyd and will give you the black eyed peas

    amen lets shake on it

  • i love this song even if it way before my time lol

  • This was the song playing when my brother checked out with his brain tumor....he loved this song....

  • I was listening to this on the radio and first I thought it was bob dylan, but then I decided it was eric clapton

that's some pretty good company, I don't think you could take it as an insult :)

  • DIRE STRAITS FOREVER BABY

  • This song is so chill, I love it. In general and from a bass player perspective. This is just so enjoyable.

  • DIRE STRAITS REUNION FOR SUPER BOWL 2012 :D

  • brings me back to 1981 when I was a combat troop for the reg army infantry

  • MAN HE CAN PLAY THAT GUITAR!! LOVE THIS SONG

  • i was about seven or eight years old when this song came out...it was a huge hit, always on the radio!

  • Love the Straits and this is my favorite track

  • HA! 2:44, he plays an electric like me! but better:-(

  • BLAST IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Always, always awesome. Never get tired of listening to this!

  • One of the best songs ever BUT.. They cut out one of the best chickenpickin solos ever..

  • He looks like the puarto rican guy from sanfor n son lmao..

Naw but its a great song.!

  • Great ending. It's not about the fancy guitar playing at the end. It's about the song. And it always will be.

  • One of the greatest songs ever written.

  • Very overlooked despite their millions of views

  • the first generation to look 20 for its music I dont think so unless your like in your 60s

  • jeff beck is in a league of his own.....knoffler better than clapton, but still kinda in the same league.....no one can touch beck

  • ya!!! fuck ya!!!!

  • @MrBerg6 hey faggott go to hell!!!!!.......

  • your gay if you dislike this

  • this song reminds me of all our family road trips, my dad used to make us listen to the dire straits, dont get me wrong, i love the dire straits its just that this was my dads favorite song so he made us listen to it in the car all the time and i used to get really car sick. therefor this song makes me car sick

  • @Weeglez Your Dad sounds pretty cool! What happened to his kids?

  • classic classic classic, classic fucking song and band!!!!

  • Well said homic, I do like the aged look of the shoot too.

  • BTW this is a classic song. The only thing the video does for me however is highlight the performance, so I guess in that way it's good, it doesn't distract from the song.

  • @yeolewildbill

I like the video in that it goes along with the songs themes: Being a humble musician. It isn't about being a rock star or having a crazy music video. Its about enjoying music as the artform it is and not getting too caught up in the scene that surrounds it.

  • LiberalPeach - Totally agree with the Taylor Swift. Comment DMB deserved the grammy regardless if you may or may not like DMB, GRUX is clearly one of the greatest come back recordings in recent history. Taylor Swift is an industry puppet and the puppet masters won, smply to sell more and more thats all.

  • REAL MUSIC TO MY EARS MAKES ME WANT TO HAVE AN ORGASM.

OH YEAH. Beat This Justin Beiber..

  • this is one of the better songs to analyze from the time period!

  • 177 people dislike this song.

... What? You were expecting something awesome, creative, and worthy of a thumbs up?

Then watch the damn video. :3

  • This has to be one of the top three rock 'n' roll songs in the history of the movement. Hell, it's probably the best!

  • He really does know all the chords.

  • Very cool! This is how music should be done!

  • I don't want it to get grossly ovver-played so people get sick of it, but frankly this may be the best classic rock song of all time. Seriously, how many totally different riffs are in this song? How cool are the lyrics? How perfectly understated is Mark Knofler's voice? Plus it has the awesome fast riff at the end.. all the elements of total coolness are present.

  • You know...I don't usually do this....But those 177 people that disliked this?....My name is Lance, I live in Naples, Florida...Anytime, anyplace, if you want to make a big deal of this....Send me your e-mail, and we'll "meet", and "talk". My father, who has been dead for twenty years, LOVED this song...These guys can pick a fucking guitar. Got something to say!?!?!? Be a man, let's meet. I'll fucking gut you like a pig...One at a time. Sound fun? It does to me.

  • @Alcohollica1966

Dude calm down. I like this song as much as the next guy, but if someone doesn't then I'm not going to get mad and make death threats.

    It's just music brotha.

  • Harry may not mind if he doesn't make the scene, but I sure would've loved to have heard the full ending to this epic classic! :D

  • 177 people are deaf....

  • How can people not like the song????

  • Awesome music is still being made, you just need to know where to look. If you're looking in the dubstep section, you're doing it wrong.

  • Why would you do that? That was an awesome guitar solo at the end?! What the fuck? D:

  • WTF one of the greatest guitar solos in history is cut off! Anyone who likes what they hear here, and doesn't know the song, needs to hear the last 20-30 seconds of this song. Unbelievable.

  • These cats rock hard and heavy, smooth as a molasses milkshake and fit to remember forever.

  • This is one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME

  • Real music - real soul.

  • This is the kind of song, and band, you listen to after a hard days work.

  • how can someone dislike this song? Whats there not to like about it?

  • @xCH0Px Because unlike us normal people who know great talent and have great taste in music, there are those that are deaf to great music and too dumb to even know it. Any more it's not about great musical talent, it's about the music producers and the corperates making money off of young media whores like on American idol, Who's got talent or Do you think you can sing. TEENY BOB BULLSHIT.

  • A classic for sure. nothing like these guys out today.

  • Wow, takes me back to some FUN times....almost in high school, hanging around, and guys in white jeans. Guys....bring back white jeans! ; )

  • I find it funny that my generation is the first to look back further than 20 years for its music. It kinda shows that there are those among us who realize the filth that is out there today. Being a musician in his teens, i feel that our days our deprived of any sort of musical inspiration at all, especially with abominations like justin beiber

  • @x0SKYSM0x this is some music before i was even born, and i couldnt agree more

  • @x0SKYSM0x Good answer! Talent is a rarity today without it being all fake. As a musician myself as well, it really is sad to see it heading this way.

  • @x0SKYSM0x Quite frankly, you just have to look harder than what is set in front of you. There was plenty of shit music at the time of this recording too, it's just that the best stuff was timeless where the filth was only made to cash in at what was hot at the time. It'll be the same in 20 years. The White Stripes might be considered "Classic rock"

  • @ChernobylTaco Look i think you missed the point. I wasn't saying that there is absolutely no music worth listening out today. I was simply outlining the fact that, proportionally, good quality music has become extremely rare in comparison to the "money grabbing" music. This is due largely in part to the crippled state of the music industry, but also from a clear shift in culture. We do not have any led Zeppelins today. Lyrics no longer subtly convey their message, and computers control rhythm.

  • @x0SKYSM0x

Yeah, and then there are also those of us who realize that there is actually great music out there that just doesn't get media attention.

Music has not died. People are bound to create your perception of great music no matter the era.

  • @DanAran162 I did not say music died. No where did i say that there was absolutely no music out today. All i was pointing out is the growth in crap, and decline in musicianship.

  • @x0SKYSM0x I'm still a musician, and I agree! I've played it all in 40 + years, and now I'm a jazz player. Not too many of us left! Can't do the crap they listen today, and old time rock bands are everywhere. I love Dire Straits though.

  • @x0SKYSM0x And Rebecca Black

  • @x0SKYSM0x

Inspiration is out there, you just won't find it on the radio.

  • Thank you! I am 54 years young and it does my heart good that there are people your age that seem to have thier head on straight and actually appreciate good music. It's damn scarey what kids listen to these days. Thank you again!!!

  • @statum8 I'm of the "younger generation", born after this was released, and I don't even own a TV or radio. New age mainstream shit is just that: shit. Couldn't pay me to listen to it if I were deaf. 50 who?

  • @statum8 I KNOW MAN!!! I'm a 17 yr old, and I feel ashamed of kids these days! All those stupid gagas and beibers....

  • @statum8 my 21 yr old son listens to the same music I listened to at his age. the majority of the new music is noise!

  • @statum8 dude im 12 and i am a hippie (no jk).i made my grandparents buy me these old vintage bell bottoms and i wear them to school even though kids make fun i tell them this fuck the shit you listen to.

  • @nicholasomesfilms Right on!!! Hippies rule!

  • @statum8 im 15 this song is great!!!

  • @x0SKYSM0x Nice comment darling, yes, it is true, nowadays its very rare to find a good band and let alone a good song. Keep on the good spirit. Kiss kiss

  • @x0SKYSM0x Yo, there's some really great stuff out there today, too, if you look around. Dire Straits are still fantastic, though.

  • @x0SKYSM0x You are a fucking moron... there is plenty of good music out there today you just don't look further than what's on TV you faggot. Come here and brag about liking this music like the typical attention seeking douchebag, just leave.

  • @redbuffalo15 ya... i'm the one who is attention seeking..

  • @x0SKYSM0x ya... you are

  • @x0SKYSM0x look up mumford and sons, and vampire weekend, and dispatch, and braddigan, and state radio. they are amazing modern music.

  • @x0SKYSM0x Oh, please. Listen kiddo, you don't think these guys listened to B.B. King and Miles Davis? You think they never listened to their forebearers? If you think the width and breadth of contemporary music begins with Beiber and ends with Kesha you need to stop paying attention to the dolts in freshman homeroom and start scowering the net. Have you listened to Ska? Underground hiphop? Postrock? The numberless permutations of Electronic Music?

There's a whole world out there, my brother.

  • @kjpurkapile Ska rules!

  • @kjpurkapile Gee whiz it's only music.

  • @guapamt2002 Music is life

  • @guapamt2002 Music means a lot to some people.

  • @x0SKYSM0x Idk, there's still some great stuff that comes out today, it's just not on the surface. It's important to learn classic styles and develop as a musician, but in the process you should try to create something that's unique to you. I feel like so much music gets looked over today because it doesn't follow conventional structure or tonality, even when the guys making it are fully aware and capable of these concepts. Learn the rules, master them, but don't be afraid to break them.

  • @x0SKYSM0x -- my boys are doing just that...neither listen to today's garbage...

  • @x0SKYSM0x just so you know, beiber is hardly a new pehomenon; you could ask alex chilton, if he was still alive!

  • @x0SKYSM0x dude you're fucking retarded... they didnt have internet to see older stuffs like you do... oh btw gj on realizing satan = justin beiber

  • @x0SKYSM0x STFU!

  • @x0SKYSM0x Oh come on - you're not at all the first generation to go back 'further than 20 years" for its music. I'm in my 50s and was listening to music from the 20s and 30s as well as the current music. There's great music from all periods, you just have to find it.

  • I am taking a little trip down memory lane. I am no longer a fossil. 78 was a very good year. Viet Nam was over, tricky Dick was outta there.

  • this is the kind of song you listen to in 1978 in the back of a van with the stripe on the side with a carpet and a bed wearing a blue and orange down vest in a field drinking on cheap beer and taking hits from a doob or a bong on summer vacation

  • drum fill at 3:39 = amazing

  • @finiland couldnt agree with you more

  • the lead is awesome

  • man diz song brings back alot of memoriez of way back when lol

  • Ahhhhhh you missed the best solo!!!!!!!

  • Oh shit my bad guys

I accidentally hit the dislike button 176 times

    Carry on

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is hes playing he solo on?

  • @raidersSolja if your talking the Red Guitar thats a Fender

  • @technoterminator

  • Happy Birthday Mark Knopfler!
