@mastronardialex no, u lil mac bitch. 3d editors and creators will never be able to work like they do on a Mac like they do on PC. Pcs are built for 3d, its in there blood. :DD
@Ningirsutyr Hi-end film and character animation needs large texture maps, for example, so if the director wants to zoom in on a character, you retain detail in the skin/face/whatever you're zooming in on. Low resolution texture maps won't stand up to scrutiny in close-ups, the become pixelated and distorted, and ruin the look =)
@shinjide213 only Nvidia, lots of people pissed off out there, i am one of them. Anyway i am able to run it on a back machien i have with a Nvidia GPU.
@allthegreat17 show off? that is a mere toy compared to my i7 Six Core Processor, 12GB SAMSUNG DDR3 TRI-DDR3 1333MHz (3 x 4GB) of RAM and a 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 460 graphics card. now that is showing off.
By the way, Mari also runs very well on newer GeForce cards. I'm using a GTS 450, the one from ASUS, on a custom PC build using an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor. Disable "deferred shading" from the preferences if you're using a GeForce card and though you'll lose some performance, the system won't crash the display driver and activate Windows 7's "Timeout Detection and Recovery", or TDR. I'm extremely pleased to see the release of Mari from Weta; it simplifies the texture painting process!
Excellent. I've been developing something similar for geometric detail at my own studio, it's a very obvious need for anyone dealing with that kind of detail. And linux is definitely an easier dev platform for such a thing.
Would be interesting to see how procedural detail could be added as a feature, perhaps via a plugin system.
@Replicator87 The reason it's laggy? 40 4096x4096 textures multiplied by the channels in the shader, which is around 10. That's a lot of textures attempting to be drawn on the screen at the same time, along with computations of bumps, specularity, etc; film requirements are way more complex than any video game, so the frame-rate here is amazing for the amount of data being wrangled by the software. Mari does disk caching and creates image proxies in the background, which helps on performance.
Hi good not understand anything but I really am fascinated by pc's unfortunately do not speak the language ... but I always liked since childhood to work on something of this magnitude incredible Nvidia ... Making Games ... Creating Gpu's only good luck and I wish to go ahead!! Nvidia is the best! Nor draw very well to create my animations but I think with time and careful study I think it will improve a lot, Nvidia Force!
Wait, what!? 700 4k-textures!?... Pluss layers?

@Jinseeker15 He meant each layer of textures consists of 40 4K maps, which is insane.

To learn a little more about Mari, check out the article over at CGSociety. In Google for example, just search: Mari CGsociety
