As a bass player, I have to critique Ben Orr on one point. Why do bass players put down their instrument of choice as soon as they go solo? Ben seems content to strum a few rhythym guitar chords instead of personally laying down the awesome bassline that accompanies this song. Ben Orr was one of my favorite lead vocalists/bassists in rock music. Singing lead and playing bass isn't easy, but Ben Orr made it look effortless.
Ben looks and sounds really hot in this video, but I think that shirt makes him look bigger above the waist. Looking at his pants :-) he looks like he is in his perfect weight, but that shirt is just way too old person looking and the print makes him look heavier. He is still very hot! I wish I could have seen that concert, too!!!!
New CD release? One option would be to get in touch with someone related to Ben and pose as a businessman interested in releasing a new compilation or box set called "The Ben Orr Experience." I know that he has a son named Benjamin Orr. His son might know who inherited the unreleased master recordings, or at least be able to steer us in the right direction. You have to be confident and creative, otherwise nobody will take you seriously and nothing will be done to release this fantastic music.
This is GREAT! Thanks for posting it! Ben and the band sound wonderful here and as someone else here said (what I was thinking too) is that they sound more like The Cars than The New Cars. Ben was a MAJOR part of that band. To me, he WAS the band. He looked good here...only wish I could have seen his face better. He was always a dream of mine.
Yes, rhythm guitar, of course Ben could have played lead if he wanted. His vocals on the earlier classics were unpretentious. He was the Heart and Soul of the Cars. Ric was not bad by any means, but Ben was the first success of this band, and should be remembered for that.
I came back and watched this after a long time. I thought the same thing and was about to comment..but I looked up and it was me who said that in the first place! hah
Oh My. He has the sexiest voice ever! So sad that he is gone. He is a legend to me! I first saw him sing on Friday Night Videos. I didn't know who The Cards were. (Just a young kid). I saw him singing Let's Go and had to buy the album the very next day. He was my first love and still holds that place in my heart. See you in Heaven, Ben. I miss you.
Gorgeous voice! Hope he still sings in Heaven! What a crowded place it must be up there...can't imagine anyone that wouldn't want to come here him sing! Thanks so much for posting!
OMG...I'm from Boston (now living in Kansas City). I used to write songs with Igor Khoroshev (who also arranged music with Ben in the middle 90's. Man I hav e been out of the loop, I did not realize that Ben had passed. This is a sad night for me, the Cars were one of the most under-rated bands of a generation...they were SO pioneering in their sound. I grew up with them...RIP Mr. Orr..you were a true poet. Yo Bassman...i saw Fortune many times in the 90's. They still together?
Pretty hot but not as hot as the North Shore. I remember Fortune playing at (I think it was Ovations) on Rt. 1. Anyway, Im still rocking out with my Ibanez RG 770 shredding and writing songs. I miss New England. I miss doing music full-time...but I'm still doing it with my whole heart and ultimately thats what counts. Keep on rockin in the free world brutha!
This was at Boston's City Hall Plaza. The only spots where there weren't any people were the aisles and certain spots that Boston Police kept clear....there were over 20,000 people there that night.
Wow, thanks so much for posting this video! It's great to see a performance of Benjamin from the 90's. He was easily one of the best musicians ever! We miss you Ben. RIP

He had a very cool voice. Ric got most of the vocals on the later cars albums but I always liked Benjamin at least as much. Very cool cat.

Yes, we're doing between 15-20 shows a year, they've been going very well.
