If you read Masoumeh Ebtekar's book, Take over in Tehran, you see the fear of a similar coup was the main reason for the take over and request for returning the Shah.

Just read the book of "Mission to Tehran" by General Robert E.Huyser who was sent to Iran By president Carter to help Khomeini's coming to power. Frazier i think your idea of the history is a looser one not Mosadegh who is loved by majority of Iranian.Reza shah has signed a contract with British in 1933 (Anglo-Iranian Oil treaty)giving 85% of iranian oil revenue to British and that damn traty was opposed by Dr.Mosadegh who tried to abolish it.All mosadegh wanted from Shah was to Yield to constitutional monarchy and shift the power to the majlis(congress)and be a good king not a dictator emperor.

If you read Masoumeh Ebtekar's book, Take over in Tehran, you see the fear of a similar coup was the main reason for the take over and request for returning the Shah.
If US has returned the Shah, she would have made an effective gesture of friendship that would heal partially the roots of hard feelings of Iranians toward US.
But, the chose to confront, and those hard feelings were rigidly solidified after US navy ships hit an Iranian passenger aircraft with two missiles over the Persian Gulf.

The biggest problem at hand, which I personally can't understand, is how could a country whose 60% of the population is under 30 years old allow itself to be hijacked by a small band of ancient religious zealots! It simply amazes me. Perhaps the memories of the 2 million people who were killed or disappeared after the Mullas arrived has taken the fight out of the general public....That indeed was the intention.
