Hi, Ive got 2007 pair of 66 RCV forks and was wondering if you know how I can make them stiffer? They do have compression adjustment but it doesnt stiffen them enough. Can I just add a bit more oil? Cheers.
Have you set the sag is the first setup issue. Measure the forks fully extended and also when you are sitting on the bike,, the fork should be around 25-30% compressed when you are sitting on the bike normally. If that's ok,are you bottoming them out? If so, adjust the high speed compression damping(if you have it) on the bottom of the fork leg. Or add air to the top of the fork legs if you have the schraeder air valves under the little caps that unscrew on the top.extra oil is a last resort.
Thanks for the reply. To set the sag do I use a shock pump to add air? The forks in question are basically the same as the ones in this video. Was air added to these?
@99williamsc3 if you have the 66 with the gold adjusters on the top of the fork legs, you will have to add a bit more oil(not too much or they will not get full travel) as you don't have the air valves. The later ones with the white lowers and black/red tops have air valves you can use a shock pump on.
1) by adding more oil you can tune and prevent metal-2-metal harsh bottoming, but it makes no sense on stifness - stifness you can change by another spring rate or by spring/air preload (if available)
2) older MZCH like my 66 2005 model have air valve in both legs (under golden top caps)
Hi Mate, got a 66 all mountain SL1 and the lock out on the right leg has stoped working (no lock-out) was going to send it away for a service/repair but having seen your vids am considering giving it a go myself. Any help regarding what might be wrong with the lock-out would be much appreciated.

Hey great video, could you do one on changing seals. I have some 2005 888's and one seal needs changing. going to do both before any one says anything.
Hi, dont suppose you know how to do with with a 2007 66RV do you? Its making a bit of an odd sound and it doesnt sag when I sit on it and I weight 95Kg!
@ZozobraDoom I think they were the first of the taiwanese ones after production left Italy? The ones I've seen made there leave a bit to be desired. I'd strip them and wipe them out and refill with fresh oil. They all follow the same sort of strip down on the ones I've done...One I serviced .the innards had unscrewed themselves so there was no rebound and the air side was bone dry!
@blumpher cheers mate. It says made in Italy on it IIRC. I let some of the air out and I've achieved the right level of sag for free ride use now but I think I'll change the oil at some point soon anyway just so I can inspect the innards. Is it strictly necessary to change the seals? They dont appear to be leaking.
@ZozobraDoom I don't bother changing the seals until they start leaking....as long as you take care putting the lowers back on, I've got away with doing it 3 or 4 times...
Sounds like you've got things set up better too. Good luck!
@TheWaveMicke yes, 7.5 weight fork oil, available from motorbike shops. If they don't have it, get 5 wt and 10 wt oil and mix together equal amounts. Much cheaper that way!
blumpher... great vid. just wondering what's the best air preload pressure for these forks? i weigh around 190lbs, any help would be much appreciated! i don't want to over inflate them and do damage. cheers mate
If you have the spring variant, the air valves on top of each fork leg are there to add more preload if you bottom out. I'd set the sag to be 25% when you were sitting on the bike with your usual biking gearon. If the fork sags too much, put more air in until you only sink 25% of the travel.Make sure you put equal air in both legs..
Benzine? that might take off the paint. If there's lots of metal filings in the oil, I'd strip it all and give it all a clean in white spirit then detergent and water, drying it off with some spray oil It should be peachy smooth when back together then...
yes, it'll be similar I seem to recall form the super t's I did in the past. If you put 5 w oil in it the damping will be lighter, if you put 10 w oil it will be slower.
you need to use suspension fluid 7.5 weight oil in the fork...try your local motorcycle or motorcross dealer as they are much cheaper than bike shops and a litre will last you a good few changes
Just want to say thanks again to you for making this video, scince watching this i have taken apart my 888 and DJ 3 to change oil, and even the confidence to change springs and lowers on the DJer, I also snapped my 888 rebound cartrage when i tried to put the top cap back on after a spring change, £85 for a new one but a lesson well learned.
Without the video i wouldnt of tried it so thanks!
Glad it helped, and you had a go...it's much more satisfying to repair stuff yourself, and as you've found taking your time, you learn and make the fork work better/last longer too!
the compression/rebound dials at the top of the forks (gold) that you can adjust with your hands, are stuck. The bike was bought second hand and i cannot turn them, any ideas why? should i try it with a pair of pliars?
hmmm. probably due to never being turned!..you will damage the aluminium using pliers, but there's not much purchase on them. I'd be tempted to take the damper rods out and try putting the gold bits in boiling then cold water , keep doing it until they free off.(the expansion/contraction can break corrosion bonds. ) Try some penetrating oil as well. you could try pliers with some cloth wrapped round them as a last resort I suppose but when the damper rods are out you might have better purchase.
Hey, sweet vid man really helpful. I got me a 05 888rc, and want to ajust the travel from 170 to 200mm, i have been told it can be done by removing a top out spacer. Anyhelp or a video would be more help then you could imagine!
I'd be surprised if removing a spacer made the fork travel longer, normally adding a spacer or longer spring would do that but if someone knows better, please let me know
A few questions, should you be using engine oil iin the forks? And do you know if an 05 888RC is a 26 mil socket? I tried using an adjustable spanner on mine and absolutely fucked the top cap.
engine oil isn't right, you need straight grade 7.5 wt oil from your local motorbike or motorcross dealer for the marzocchi forks...around £7 a litre, much cheaper than from the pushbike shop.Don't know about the 05 888rc, I would expect it's the same, I just use my socket set which has plenty of sizes!
you can if you want to...but when the fork only cost £80 and you can get the later rc2x version for £150 second hand with much better damping, it didn't seem worth the bother, as we would have had to change the seals at a cast of another £20 if we had pulled it apart to do a proper job.
It runs a lot better but I would buy the newer fork as, having ridden both, there is no comparison in performance
is that 220cc per leg? i need to rebuild mine and i cant find info for it...

@rockandrollsuicide01 not sure of that one, but I'd try an oil change and put the correct amount of oil in..that might cure it...

Cheers

@mugenintegra328 go on the windwave website and they have the oil levels listed for the forks....you need to know the age to get the correct level.

olliesloman 2 years ago
have a look on the windwave website and they have oil tables for all the forks showing you how much to put in.
Blumpheroni 2 years ago
the MZ 66rc uses 210cc per leg, 7.5w, for more progresion, 5w, be sure to not overtight foot nuts, torque them at 12Nmm.
