The recording of Fairground Organs goes back to that time on Palace Pier in 1973, i was hooked and started to go to rallies with my trusty old Uher 5" reel machine to record any organs i could find. The old recording of Organ were far better than what is produced by various sources now, that why i used my experience to properly record Mechanical music using good quality Valve mics that give you a nice rich warm sound.
I then went off to start my own studios in 1975 called Airship. We had our own label, small maybe but a few good acts came through, most notable was a band called Fiction Factory in 1982. We recorded the "Feels like Heaven" track and sold it to EMI who went on to produce their one and only album. The single charted and is quite often found on 80s compilation discs now as a filler.
In fact, if you listen to Queen's track "Brighton Rock", right at the start you will hear the fair on Palace Pier, they sent me down to Brighton with a Nagra and two AKG's bound together with masking tape to record that very sound bite, that is my claim to fame.
I learnt my trade firstly going into Trident Studios during my summer holidays back in 1967-8 , that’s where i met Gus Dudgeon and Stuart Epps. I worked in the same room as both those guys and Ken Scott on albums such as Ziggy Stardust, Queen 1 & 11, Mike Stone on the Queen's Night at the Opera and Day at the races albums.
A combination of Rode NT MICS. When you proffesionally record anything, you need to use different mics for different instruments and sounds. All the mics are Valve and that is why they look ugly
yes, Kevin & John have done the gold leaf as well, the whole thing is breathtaking. This track is on the first disc and i am working on it as i type this to get the whole disc ready in time for GDSF. They will have a volume two out in November as well, we did two sessions.
Great vid Grahan! This has to be one of the finest fronts in England, if not the world! tge attention to detail is second to none! ive noticed they added quite alot of gold leaf! it looks stunning has Kevin & his father done this aswell? the organ has some great music with it, i look forward to seeing it at Dorset this year and i sure will buy the new CD!
Some organ discs now are very badly produced or recorded in an echo chamber, not how they were meant to be heard at all.
