At the end, when the camera circles around the girl, it shows the EVA masked one then him which in my opinion means that in the end, he managed to overcome his inner-self or defeat the demons inside of him.
Pg. 5: Everytime he killed an elite it was like he was defeating that part of him that he hated. When his current girl jumped off the cliff she really didnt. It was just what she was going to do but our hero was still with her in spirit to prevent her. Thats why he appeared at the end behind her.
And that is my take on it. Could be way off but having an idea allows me to sleep at night.
Pg. 4: Once cornered our hero sees his beloved step back with the EVA on and dissapear showing she was never there. This is where our hero comes to terms with the fact that she is gone but he cannot move on until he defeat his own demons. (in his dream those are the elites) This is where the EVA comes in. It represents those demons inside him that prevented him from moving on.
Pg 3: While his buddy breaks the news of his suicide to his girl our main guy in unconscious at the bottom of the cliff we enter his dream world (halo reach). She then holds a funeral for him. In the dream world he is determined saving his former girl this time and rushes to her. He gets to her just in time to protect her. In the real world his current girl visits his past battle sites and angry over the fact she couldnt save him expresses her upset physically at the home.
Pg 2: At the base he begins having flashbacks about the training and battles that took place after the incident (also serves the perpose of showing how badass he is). In all those he sees the EVA(dome) helmet appears, I'll explain my theory on that later. After a life of seeing death everywhere he cant help but see the mysterious EVA on his military buddy. Overcome with grief he decides to jump off the cliff.
