  • Ok, first of all, this has nothing to do with the video. It's even less pertinent than a discussion about homosexuality would be (no, I'm not homophobic).

Secondly, I have Asperger's Syndrome, which is high-functioning Autism. I have above-average intelligence and a hard time getting along with people. These are traits several of you mentioned.

However, you have to understand that Austism is on a spectrum and fairly inconsistenet not related to this video. At all.

  • @drdisarper Spread the AS love my friend, we're blessed

  • love phil jupitus

  • @mikeyt12321 They aren't on earth

  • The title is wrong, it should be trees, not plants.

The fastest growing plant is bamboo and can grow up to 1 meter per day.

  • @MrThezho Absolutely right, although I believe that kelp can give bamboo a bit of a run for its money when it gets going. Maybe someone could stage a race. Bamboo v Kelp.

  • @darebinroad bamboo, you cant make anything useful ot of kelpaside from a few pill exracts and some posh side dish :P

  • a spicific type of seaweed grows at 1 meter a day, beat that.

  • @urshoeonhead

I may have some very mild undiagnosed form of some sort of Asperger-like syndrome. I will say, that while sometimes the way my brain functions if very inconveiniant, there is a certain tendency to find fault with the rest of the world rather than myself. If you have an inteligent person who is different he is likely to be proud and find fault with "normal".

  • The red wood is the fastest growing TREE but it is not the fastest growing PLANT. that title I do believe falls to bamboo.

  • @dsdougharty I am sure you are aware a TREE is a PLANT

  • @Endomorth Which means there are more plants than trees. Bamboo is a plant and not a tree. It PROVES his POINT. But still it could be one of the fastest growing plant as the title says.

  • Comment removed

  • obviously someone left a comment about autism, and the rest are just comments asking why theres comments about autism

  • Autism... sequoias needing forest fires. No. No, sorry, I'm missing the connection.

  • I thought it was some type of Bamboo that was the fasted growing plant on Earth. Maybe the Redwood is the fastest growing tree, not plants in general. Or I could be horribly wrong.

    As I so often am.

  • *fastest not fasted. Duh! I need to proof read more.

  • Redwoods as a vehicle of vengence... I LOVE IT!!!

  • too bad jeremy clarkson wasn't there he would say "It's the fastest growing tree ..... in the world"

  • @HiddenRainful ya, have you seen the autistic guy in london who can hear a song just once and play it on piano note for note? i dont know what his name is but he is crazy, its almost like a super power or something

  • fastest growing plant is bamboo i think

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou Yep, it can grow up to 4ft a day, in some places it is almost possible to see it growing. If you're wondering why I know this, I watch a little bit too much QI.

  • @MadSkeelz16

When you say you "can almost" see it growing, does that mean you can't actually see it growing?

That would be an average of about 0.85mm per minute. I suppose you could just about detect that with the naked eye. Interesting. ;)

  • @Nilguiri Well I've never seen bamboo growing so I didn't want to say you can DEFINITELY see it growing incase I was wrong, but the 4ft a day statistic is corect so I imagine that you can literally see growing if you were looking close enough.

  • didnt they say the sequoia is the fastest growing TREE not plant? big difference i'd say...

  • @diecheney there is yes... other plants might grow much faster than TREES...

  • Damn it, british english is so different from american. I feel I'm missing so much humour here.

  • yes a PLANEL show..

  • Re: fastest growing plant. I think it depends on your definition of 'fastest growing'. The sequoia accumulates the most mass per individual plant, but does not gain height the fastest (do kelp technically have a height?). Proportional gain in mass is probably some kind of algae.

  • @yanyorga interesting. Presuming that all of what you say is true, I'd say that "some kind of algae" is the fastest growing plant in the world, but as you say there is not one universally-recognised definition for such things as "fastest growing" so I know my opinion is just that - an opinion..

  • Love these clips

  • this is a true story, when i was in primary school, i saw a flower literally grow up to about half a metre high in a minute. no joke.

  • @MrAdnan252 same, same.. Although I was in high school and high as shit..

  • qi is more autistic than sarah palin

  • Um...would somebody mind filling me in on where on Earth the 'Autism' argument started? I'm confused. In fact, I'm unsure of the relevance to this video...

...and for the record, I have Asperger Syndrome. Just in case anyone's wondering why I care. Thanks a bundle.

  • trees are not the only plants. The fastest growing plants are a type of bamboo.

  • @Awesnap From what I have read, the title of "fastest growing plant" is probably a tie between a a type of bamboo and a type of kelp, both listed as growing up to 2" per hour and up to 2' per day

  • @petesauber regardless sequoias arent the faster growing plant.... they aren't even really the fastest growing trees so the argument is moot. There faster growing trees that have shorter periods of growth. Either way, QI is entertaining but gets a massive amount of facts wrong. Its like watching mythbusters and saying they do scientific experiments.

  • Why can't I hear the word 'autisctic' in this video? Enlighten me (foreigner) please =)

  • There are so many autistics in this YouTube thread.

  • smell fart, there its god!

  • Umm... why does autism appear to be the subject of this comment board? I don't know about everyone else but i fail to see where anything vaguely relating to it was mentioned in the clip.

  • @DarkestHeart266

Crazed nerds with self diagnosed Aspergers syndrome most likely.

  • @30270534 But I was one of those, so why can I find the relation?

  • @30270534 *Is a crazed nerd with Asperger's Syndrome diagnosed by a medical professional* Hi there. >=(

  • @DarkestHeart266

Apparently some one thought it would be clever to call someone autistic in place of stupid, failing to realize that autism has nothing at all to do with intelligence, and ironically proving their own idiocy in the process.

    much like this other fool:

    @phattown213

Sarah Palin isn't autistic she's an airhead. Her son Trig isn't autistic either he has Down Syndrome, not even slightly related to autism. I would educate you on the difference but I doubt your capacity to understand.

  • @DarkestHeart266

What in the hell is a comment board?

  • @NuclearOat Think it through, what does it sound like?

  • @goaterism

Well the thing is, it doesn't exist.

You can't just say anything and make it a word.

  • @NuclearOat are you serious?? .... I assume you know what a message board is right?? .... so how can comment board throw you this much??

  • @DarkestHeart266 Well, because some idiot were disputing on sophistry over the relation on plant and tree, that someone compare that kind of comment to Rainman and than they start talking about autism, IQ and social relation which mean a good re-centered of the discution is needed... So, does the rain drop on autistic plant make them have an higher IQ than this enormous red hood fruit? And, anyway, how does these fruit taste like?

  • @DarkestHeart266 is it a violation of Youtube's TOS to discuss something that wasn't explicitly mentioned in the video?

  • Actually it does. Autism often comes with above-average intelligence.

  • @groznybaranek This here proves that 'TheHeroInDisguise isn't autistic but is in fact a troll.

  • @groznybaranek well usually its only in one or two areas that autistic people accelerate more than other people do, but they lack in absolutely everything else

  • @groznybaranek It depends on how you define "intelligence". If you are referring only to the range of cognitive abilities-space relations, mental rotation, mathematical, abstract and mechanical reasoning, language abilities etc, then yes, some autistic people can score more highly in some of these areas. But usually not in all of them. If you also refer to the more modern, broader conception of intelligence which includes "emotional intelligence" also, then your comment cannot be supported.

  • @groznybaranek You also need to outline how exactly you define "autism". "Autistic spectrum disorder" indicates that various degrees of intellectual, physiological and emotional impairment are included in the diagnostic range. Autistic savants are characterised by exceptional performance in specific cognitive or manual tasks, usually accompanied by strong impairment in others. Similarly, Asperger's syndrome is (generally) characterised by high cognitive and low emotional intelligence.

  • @groznybaranek Autism is rare. average intelligence isn't. not related imo.

  • @groznybaranek It's sad they don't have enough humor sense. being intelligent and not understand a joke , I would kill myself.

  • Thank you for saying so, groznybaranek. ♥

  • @groznybaranek

XD makes me think of Sherlock

  • Comment removed

  • @groznybaranek That's Aspergers or Higher functioning Autism and it's actually average to above average. Pure autism usually involves intellectual disabilities too.

  • Didn't laugh. Not once.

  • This show is hilarious but as an Autist I was offended, Seriously, I have no clear signs of being stupid yet people called me a retard once they knew about my Autisme, You guys who see Autistic as Retarded and Dumb etc. Then YOU are the "Autists"

  • @TheHeroInDisguise That is without a doubt one of the most ridiculous rants I have ever heard. Don't ever talk again.

  • @Advantium Make me.

  • @TheHeroInDisguise Oh dear god I apologize for hurting your feelings I didn't realize you were 12

  • @Advantium Coming from the guy acting gangster on YT, seriously fuck off, You're probaly the Twelve year old..

  • @TheHeroInDisguise you say "This show is hilarious but as an Autist I was offended" I watched that clip 3 times and never heard anything about autism mentioned.. I have no idea where that came from or why you were offended by that video clip

  • @DeanMalenko I meant the comment, sorry for not being clear, my bad.

  • @TheHeroInDisguise You're an idiot, you just said you got offended by people using the word "autism" in a derogatory sense and yet you use it in an "offensive" manner to all those who are making comments on it. If you're going to defend autism don't use the word as a way of trying to offend people, it only brings you down.

Most autistic people appear to be completely normal by the way, only some are like Dustin Hoffman out of rain man.

  • @TheHeroInDisguise Where do they mention autism in this video? And "autist" is a face-smackingly stupid term.

  • Autism does not mean stupidity, but it does seriously restrict your social abilities. Besides, your intelligence is utterly out of sync with the rest of the world: information is absorbed differently and the output is misunderstood and frankly to most (employers / teachers) useless.

The end result is the same: People with autism work in less-demanding jobs than they IQ-based could and underperform in schools.

Thus, equating it to stupidity is merited, though perchance offensive.

  • my brother has autism! It is a disability and should be treated as so, not as a "retardation" or "lack of intelligence" - why bring it up anyway? his brain is developed in a different way, for example he can remember things PERFECTLY. literally, he never forgets a word you say, telephone numbers or anything.

  • Whats all this crap with autism? its not in the video is it?!

  • @Unit06JAW No, just a very well-fed troll in the comments.

  • @lytrigian om nom nom nom

  • As I was saying, sequoias are plants, but their growth might not be as noticeable as bamboo, since bamboo tends to spread across the ground, becoming a dense thicket very quickly. Sequoias become vast trees even more rapidly, although given the scale of them, they aren't quite as noticeable, so you can be forgiven for thinking that bamboo grows faster.

  • Now, Trees are a form of plant, only woody plants, as opposed to herbaceous plants, such as bamboo (a grass), plus, I have Aspergers, which is on the Autism spectrum, and my intelligence is fine! Yeah, I may have the occasional social faux pas, but I am not a retard, nor do I have a low IQ. Last time I looked, it was over 122. Back to the subject: Kelp is technically an alga, not a plant, being a colony of unicellular photosynthetic organisms. Sequoias are plants, and do grow faster than bamboo.

  • What has Autism got to do with forest fires and trees?

  • seven people have no sense of humor.

  • @twiggy695 No, they just have one different to yours. Hard to believe there are people slightly different then you..

  • I'm not watching fuckin ads!

    Close window

  • this is only the fastest growing tree, not fastest growing plant (that honour goes to Kelp... and the fastest land-growing plant is bamboo). BBC please get your labels right!

  • @purklefluff well he (Fry) said they were the fastest groing trees on earth.

  • @purklefluff Hah, I thought it was a trick question (I suspected reading before about kelp), but it turns out to be merely a poor title.

  • @purklefluff QI gets alot of its questions from the universities of oxford and cambridge. keeping in mind the university of oxford was the first university ever established, and that cambridge is rated top IN THE WORLD I assure you its correct. the celebrity contestance get points for correct or interesting answers, and points deducted for repeating common misconceptions or urban myths. you sir would be on -1 point :D

  • @uktraceur QI does get things wrong on occasion (such as the one about cruithne the second moon) however the misconception here was just a poorly titled youtube video. the BBC gets the -1 point =D.

  • wow i actually thought cannabis was the fastest growing plant.. or is it the fastest to maturity in just 5 months or 3 months under lights..

  • What does he says at the end?? "And than as excuse 10 years later.."??

  • @KatarinaLehotska to set fire to his garden.

  • @KatarinaLehotska i think he either said life was gotten or life was golden... either way, he basically means the same thing

  • what does Stephen Hawkings have?meh, i just find it darkly humourous that a man infinitley more intellectual than than anyone (even Stephen Fry! shocking.), can't tie his shoelaces. but he CAN beat you at Chess... and Draughts, and Scrabble, and Trivial pursuit, and a crossword, and Sudoku, and Poker (probably), and he can use bigger words than you, and would win at Who wants to be a Millionaire?, yeeeeah, he's samrt.

  • Loves how there are so many stuck-up, arrogant 'interllectuals' on these videos...

  • @JonathanHawes94

Those damn dirty interlecshuls! Dey Toook ooourr Jerbs!

  • yep. it's kelp.

    feckin' keeeeeeelp *sings*

  • bamboo?

  • Comment removed

  • HA! trees r plants LOL

  • any online argument that has the phrase "i actually clearly said that kelp is NOT a plant. " is not a worthy one....

  • and also probably worth a read.

  • Kelp!

  • Love it how he uses the word "autistic" for stupid, then puts "your" rather than "you're". Idiot

  • @OhMyStuff Why don't you save ur energy and do something good instead of being the Grammar Nazi

  • @michaelyo I was doing something good, I don't think using the word "Autistic" as a replacement for stupid is on really. And why are you replying to something that was said 6 months ago? Haha

  • @OhMyStuff Do you really "love" it? Seems a bit obsessive.

  • lol

  • Well, they did say "tree", not plant. I guess they could be correct there.

  • I always heard kelp was the fastest growing plant.

tim, there are other plants that grow faster than redwoods but there are no other trees that do. Is that more clear?

  • i always thoght beans would grow faster then anything else you know bean bushes

  • shut up about the beans dude

  • 'your a idiot retarded'

Thats not even close to being gramatically correct.

This leads me to belive that it is infact you sir that is retarded.

  • kelp is not a plant... it's an algae.. the fastest growing plant is bamboo....

  • Kelp and algae are both protists :) but since this is YouTube, you're probably all going to jump down my throat anyway. Have a lovely day :)

  • protista is the main genera that they are in yes, but that is not relevant to what i was saying... im saying that kelp is a type of algae, not a plant which therefore means algae is in the kingdom protista. so what? i never said that algae was a plant.. i actually clearly said that kelp is NOT a plant.

  • It's all irrelevant. Redwoods are actually not even the fastest growing trees. They may average 4-6 ft/yr in height, but many poplars and cottonwoods can easily grow 10-15 feet per year when young, and maintain higher growth rates than redwoods with age.

  • it was relevant to the comment i was replying too.. but i don't even know about tree growth... I'm more of a plant (non tree) kind of person. i also heard that willows can grow up to seven feet a year when young though.. so yea, redwoods aren't the fastest.

  • Please do not use the word autistic as a synonym for stupid. Autism has nothing to do with intelligence.

  • No I'm not changing the subject. I'm calling you out for being ignorant and insulting. You can't call someone autistic or retarded and expect everyone to go along with it.

  • and my first comment was clarifying for other people, not jumping down your throat for anything :) I'm not claiming you ever said algae was a plant. You didn't say that. Chill.

  • Yes, it's ridiculous because you are using a word and you don't even know what it means or that it has the capacity to really insult people when you use it incorrectly. You don't have to change your ways; it's your right to be as ignorant as you want to be. But it's also my right to inform someone when they insult or offend me.

  • Actually, it's my older sister. But I appreciate your attempt at concern.

  • u ARE youtube people xD

  • eh, yea.. but i try not to be ignorant like most..

  • @SatoTM3 Damn straight :)

  • Actually does, but people with mild autism tend to be highly intelligent, so it's the other way around.

  • @qwertydeluxe But it goes right along with the lack thereof :D

  • @qwertydeluxe not true. mild to moderate autism generally is associated with abnormal mathematical prowess.

  • @osterianio @catclz What I meant was that being autistic does not necessarily categorize a person as either "retarded" or a "savant". Some autistic people do have a talent for math, while others (like my sister) have an amazing ability to remember the smallest details even from when they were very young.

In this respect, autistic people are just like "typical" people. We all have our talents and abilities, and our shortcomings. A disability like autism can just pronounce these factors.

  • @qwertydeluxe I agree. Both my dad and bro have a form of autism and they arent stupid at all.

  • @catclz Yeah my brother has austism and he is super good with computers.

  • @catclz Autism is just a mental illness, it in no way makes people stupid, nor does it mean that they are stupid. People can claim that the autistic are stupid, but it just shows their ignorance and the stigma towards such things.

  • @vikeyev1 Correction: autism is a neurological deviation (a physical issue), not a mental illness. It impairs social and communication skills, which is very different from being stupid. Autistic people are in fact often extremely talented in some aspects of the human intellect.

  • @Elenandaron They give up social intelligence, which is arguably the most important aspect of the intellect, for the ability to memorize factoids or do long division quickly. Oh, and mental illnesses can be caused by physical "issues". Autism isn't a mental illness because a mental illness is acquired, like Schizophrenia. Rather, autism is a mental handicap.

  • @QuixoticTendencies Your use of the phrase "give up" suggests that autistic people have a say in the matter. I'm sure my autistic sister would love to be socially intelligent, but instead she must be taught everything about social interaction. It is not a choice.

I believe you responded to another comment of mine; I'm not sure which. I'd like to say that autism is now called ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder b/c it is a spectrum; no two people diagnosed have the same behaviors or (dis)abilities.

  • @qwertydeluxe Perhaps I should have said "social intelligence is sacrificed in their mental development". To say autism is a choice would be ludicrous in the extreme.

  • @QuixoticTendencies DUH i mean who would CHOOSE TO HAVE IT?

  • @QuixoticTendencies and whats wrong with it?

  • @ACHMEDTHEDEADYOUTUB1 What? Which comment(s) are you replying to?

  • @qwertydeluxe Well put :)

  • @Neutrinoghost OMGYOU'RELIKESOFUNNY!

    [/sarcasm]

  • @Neutrinoghost GTFO asshole

  • @qwertydeluxe You're an autistic down :D

  • @qwertydeluxe true, my brother has autism and he has a brilliant memory, he knows every town and what county they're in, all train lines, he will tell you connecting trains. He knows capitals of the world and flags.

  • @qwertydeluxe It does, actually.

  • @qwertydeluxe Yeah! People can be smart regardless of whether or not they can draw good.

  • @qwertydeluxe it depends how you define intelligence... autism is a restriction or retardation of social intelligence

  • @qwertydeluxe

I totally agree. Heck, I know a couple of autistic men who are incredibly inelegant in there own fields of interest!!

  • @qwertydeluxe no. but autistic people are generally quite intelligent

  • @qwertydeluxe Indeed, autism is has nothing to do with stupidety...

In fact, people who have, for example, Asperger Syndrom are generally smarter then people who don't have it

  • @M3g4t0n Yes, when it comes to asperger, you are right. Asperger is a form of autism that in general affects mostly intelligent to highly intelligent people.

However, this is only a part of autism.

The majority of people with autism also have other disorders (both physical and mental are common).

Just because the intelligent ones are more often covered in the news or stories doesn't mean they are more common in reality.

  • @apella88 I know that Asperger has this because I have it myself ;)

But in general, people with autisme have a higher IQ, they just sometimes lack the means of expressing it :(

  • @M3g4t0n An example would be that they are supported in a different way because of their autism. In the UK there are entire school for people with mental disorders, including Autism. Its good because its a kinder environment, but the negative aspects of it is that the learning is dumbed down so its easier for the less able and there are less oppurtunities that the kids can take themselves. I had to go through that myself because of my Autism. I matured slower emotionally, so that school helped.

  • @Deuling1 Right behind you... Though I went to a normal school, which I was perfectly capable of finishing might I add, I only started maturing at a decent rate when I first started working. Thanks to my (now) ex colleagues and my now fellow students in College, I'm well on my way.

Autism isn't a disease, it's an obstacle that can perfectly be conquered with the proper people and time :)

  • @qwertydeluxe in fact many people with autism have elevated IQs in compensation for a lower social understanding. rain man, much? or a bloke at my school who was a maths genius and had an A in a level further maths at 13.

  • @qwertydeluxe Nor does it mean people are smart. Silly Rainman.

  • mis-titled.. as everyone has pointed out. not the fastest growing plant, but tree.

  • a tree is a plant, but the fastest growing tree is not the fastest growing plant.

read and think twice before you start accusing people of sophistry, ok?

  • I did read and have thought it at least three times. If you say "not the fastest growing plant, but tree" and then concede a tree is a plant, then it's the fastest growing plant. QED. I'm sorry you took umbrage at the word sophistry, but without an explanation of what is the fastest growing "plant" I think it's hair splitting.

  • If I say a cat is a mammal, does it mean that the biggest cat is the biggest mammal?

  • No. The biggest mammal is the biggest mammal. The fastest growing plant - no matter what type - is the fastest growing plant.
