I played enough hockey to give some input here. He had no "plan" going in, just like a lot of players don't. The goalie was playing back, close to the net. This forces the shooter to take a quick shot, because you can no longer get around the goalie. Well Doughty never intended to shoot in the first place, so just just waded in and decided to wing it. It looks like he thought about going to the backhand at the last second but the goalie was already too far back. So he just went 5 hole.

I seriously think that was ment ;) you don't see him trying to drag the puck left or right and then loosing it, he just dribbles infront of the goalie and directs it through the 5 hole, doughty for president anyways!
