Easy to remember that I'm turning 61and sipping coffee at 6: in the morning...even easier to remember the great days of my youth when "Perkins Restaurant" started playing this song. Thank god for my need for caffeine, I had forgotten it.
The Billboard for Fillmore East says it all. My gawd, look at the bands performing. Spirt with the Kinks, The Who, then Mountain with I believe Steve Miller and opening act, the Move. Come-on. Incredible.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS FANTASTIC GROUP, AND ONE OF THE BEST 60s DANCE TRACKS - THE ORIGINAL 1968-69 7" SINGLE STILL KICKS IT ON THE DANCEFLOOR. PROPS TO PATRICK COWLEY (R.I.P.) FOR RESURRECTING IT IN 1981! DAVEDJ
Yeah, that's Ratner's (Dairy Bar) in the foreground. I lived a couple blocks east of the Fillmore East back in those days, over in Alphabet City. Spirit thrilled me beyond belief. I still have some of their vinyl.
My friends and I used to listen to this song before getting pumped up to drive downtown from the suburbs to visit Rochdale College, a notorious hippy hang-out in Toronto in the late 60s. Certainly brings back memories of that crazy, wonderful time.
When KLSX 97.1 became the new "classic rock" station in Southern California in the mid-'80s, they played this all the time. I was only 9 years old and just turning on to the sounds of the late '60s/early '70s. I remember getting mixed up between two new bands I was hearing, those being Spirit and Rare Earth! You never hear this song anywhere anymore and it's a crying shame. If I get my own radio program, you better believe I'm playing this one!
If I get half a chance, I'm going to record a tribute disc one day. It was an honor to play guitar for Ed Cassidy & Co. after the tragic loss of Randy. Thanks for keeping the flame burning. Peace, SLINGER
after looking at other Spirit posts I agree the sound is fabulous for the recording- my fav's is the benefit- "the family that plays together" what a great title!
Agreed. Cak in my college days in the early 80's, this was still played all the time on the two big Philly AOR stations, but it disappeared from the radio soon after that. Too bad.
Each time I listen to this song, I focus on a different track--Jay's vocals, John Locke's pounding piano, Randy's soaring guitar, and Mark Andes' bass. The song is as amazing today as when I first heard it in 1969.
One great song...saw them at Fillmore West when I was 15- still one of the top 5 live gigs I've ever seen...They just nailed it live- song after song...Damn good...
randy had an osillator in his guitar for unlimited sustain there was an other video version of this were they were running around a set with skunk baxter that was in youtube
Great posting. Never saw Spirit but did see Jay Ferguson and his band perform this at Bowling Green State U. in the mid '70s when he was touring behind the hit single "Thunder Island."
I saw them in 1968 at the Music Hall in Houston, Tx. I was 11 yrs old. I was totally in love with Jay Ferguson!! What a great song, thanks for posting.
Lord man, I was at the show listed in marquee in the still above. Spirit was one of the greatest bands of the era and did not let down on this evening. Headlining over the Kinks, as great as they were, was not a stretch, believe me.

Saw them in Palm Beach in early 1970's - they left the lights on the whole concert so no one would light up.

Spirit was fantastic. Skin (the drummer) wasn't Randy California's dad, he was his father in law. R.I.P. Randy!

@Doublefeature56 Ed Cassidy (Mr. Skin) was Randy California's step father.

Are you serious?
I didn't know that.
What was the "combo"?
I thought I knew a bunch about this band.
And, I'm not being sarcastic.

I used to be a Fillmore East regular, but how did I miss the bill on the marquee here...Spirit, the Kinks, and the Bonzos. What a triple play.

Great tune. Was Jay Ferguson in Jo Jo Gunn? Is Ed Cassidy alive? Sad about Randy. What a loss.

This sounds just a little bit slower than when it was a hit back in '69, but I know some radio stations had faster turntables than other stations
