Very true. I admit I was staunchly pro-IRA for a time, until I learned that their struggle against British tyranny amounted to nothing more than nationalism, and preservation of the Irish ruling class.
It depends which IRA you are talking about though. These more recent groupings RIRA, CIRA, ONH, etc operate on, almost a right-wing, nationalist policy. However, the Stickies, the INLA (though maybe not any more) and to a lesser extend the Provos are very different and follow a much more marxist ideology.
Comrade - there are far too many splinter groups for you to base that on. The wider Republican movement is a socialist, anti-racist, anti-fascist, internationalist society. When you hear the term "nationalist" in Irish terms, it does not have the connotations that you would typically associate it with.. It incorporates integration, while preserving a culture/language that was removed by force.
My grandfather fought with Connolly in the G.P.O. and was jailed in Wales . Have just got his small book of autographs and some words from some of his fellow prisoners
