The pasacaglia is a "seguidilla", typical even today, and the "ritirata", the music of "retiring" of the army in the night, is very similar to that wich is to be listened in our days in spanish army. I don't find that spanish influence in the "barbiere", even when Neaples was under spanish goverment for centuries.

Bueno la musica no tiene fronteras, lo cierto es que los españoles no se han destacado nunca por la musica NI SIQUIERA AHORA., y no me vengan a decir que el flamenco por que eso es tan folklore.

It never had a military purpose but did portray soldiers in garrison changing the guard at night. The movement in the is video and in Master and Commander is not the ritirata or have any military meaning but is the 5th movement, the Passa calle and is about ordinary people singing in the street. Hola lamusica, lo que es dificil de entender hoy en dia es que son 3 piezas diferentes (indpendientes) de musica, no es una sola pieza, aunque hoy en dia se interprete como una obra unica y eso tambien esta documentado. Parte 1. Pasacalles, Parte 2. Ave Maria y la ultima Parte 3 "Sonata en Sol Mayor" G-5 con su "Allegro militare". Posteriormente se unirian y interpretarian juntas. Estamos de acuerdo precioso. Pero para rendir honor a Boccherini hay que enterder su obra.

It is called "La ritreta di Madrid" composed for the King of Spain (Naples and two Sicilies).
Ritreta as a Military Retreat, of place to rest on leave of duty. He mixed several pasacalles, very popular for that time. But the purpose of the Retreta de Madrid was military, "La retreta militar" or "tempo di Marcia", The moment to march to retreat and rest....

Interesting, you've caused me to learn a bit about this piece researching it. Thanks. The ritirata di Madrid is the last movement of the quintet Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid. It never had a military purpose but did portray soldiers in garrison changing the guard at night. The movement in the is video and in Master and Commander is not the ritirata or have any military meaning but is the 5th movement, the Passa calle and is about ordinary people singing in the street. Fascinating!

Iunius, it is considered as military music in Spain, where it was composed. In Spain there was a concert called "Insolitos aspectos de la musica militar", (Unusual aspects of Military Music). Other are French E. Ozi "pas de Manoeuvre" and Spanish Retreta. "Toque de Ordenanza" of 1761. During the Spanish-American war of 1898, it was used by Spain's Army as a military retreat, too. Boccherini wrote 11 military marches.... more....

no, is not. es una composicion a las calles y gentes de el madrid nocturno. Boccherini sentia un gran apego a esta cuidad tan maravillosa donde yo vivo e hizo esta obra para si agradecer a los madrileños y a la corte en especial que madrid le adoptara hasta su muerte en 1805.

Hola lamusica, lo que es dificil de entender hoy en dia es que son 3 piezas diferentes (indpendientes) de musica, no es una sola pieza, aunque hoy en dia se interprete como una obra unica y eso tambien esta documentado. Parte 1. Pasacalles, Parte 2. Ave Maria y la ultima Parte 3 "Sonata en Sol Mayor" G-5 con su "Allegro militare". Posteriormente se unirian y interpretarian juntas. Estamos de acuerdo precioso. Pero para rendir honor a Boccherini hay que enterder su obra.

Mi ricordo d'aver sentito un Quintetto quattro o cinque anni fa, al Conservatorio di Bruxelles; e mi parve magnifico, e poi nuovissimo, pieno d'episodii inaspettati. Mi ricordo bene che in alcune parti il Quintetto, per l'uso dell'unisono, si riduceva a un Duo; ma gli effetti ottenuti con la differenza dei timbri erano d'una finezza straordinaria. Non ho ritrovato nulla di simile nelle altre composizioni strumentali
