  • peter cetera, its my good¡¡ long live CHicago¡¡

  • i love how he's adding extra notes on bass, sounds more fleshed out

  • Peter Cetera is such a talented singer and it's a loss for Chicago without him.

  • @CAT31in09 I TOTALLY agree!

  • @CAT31in09 Certainly agree with you about Cetera not being on Chicago anymore.

  • Man, I can't get over what an idiot Peter Cetera was to burn bridges with this band. They has such good cohesion in these days. I still love them today. But Peter Cetera is a total fool and idiot.

  • 5 people cant appreciate what good music is..

  • Very cool. But what a terrible guitar solo :P

  • @GJmusique I think that MICHEAL LANDAU played lead guitar on the studio version.

  • @psychodelicrock12

I read it was Steve Lukather. Members of both Toto and Chicago have been befriended for a long time.

  • @GJmusique Sorry, GJmusique, Chris is really freat guitarist, he's not some kind of shredder, but he has the balls when he plays.

  • I WAS 3..

    :P

    AT LEAST I WAS..

  • Like the commercial says, the ladies like cetera.......you like cetera, lol.

  • Peter Cetera left the band after the first leg of the Chicago Tour in March of 1985.

The band was unable to get Cetera back for the Summer Tour of that year.

Cetera wanted to do a solo Album and stay in the band but the band said NO!

  • @pachacutti Plus, he wanted to spend more time with his family.

  • It looks like Bill Champlin is playing "Bass" notes on the synth when they show the guitar solo at 2:20. ..not to say that Cetera couldn't play...he could...but he definitely had help here. Also...Lukather and Porcaro were a big part of this album..no surprise considering Toto played the backing tracks to most of Lionel Richie's "Can't Slow Down" album in 83 and several other folks in the mid 80's.

  • @Supermonkey22 You mean Lee Loughnane (trumpet player) .... doesnt surprise me! Go Leemeister!

  • No replacing Cetera...He rocks!

  • Pretty sure that's the great Danny Seraphine on the drums...

  • Is that Mike Baird playing drums?? Sure looks like him...

  • Listen to Cetera with the LOUD bass!

  • glad im not the only one that noticed, sounds amazing!

  • This is my favoret chicago song!

  • I wouldent doubt it. There isnt much Lukather and Porcaro didnt do in the 80's.

  • LOVE THIS SONG

  • Thank you, it helps a lot! I'll be sure to check out the performance. I wasn't lucky enough to have seen them in concert with Cetera. Although i have seen them since as they tour around my area quite frequently.

    thanks again!

  • Does anybody have concert dates for the 1984-1985 tour? Particularly Oakland Ca

  • Peter lost a crap load of weight between the '70's and when Chicago 17 came out!!

  • ChicagoKid,who's the girl in the vid of this song?Is it Tawny Kitaen?

  • Imagine a Chicago song w/o big horns!

  • lol.. great video except for the squeeky mouse in the background on the the "stay the night" refrain

  • Chicago played a free concert on the Ben Franklin Parkway in Philly in the summer of '87!

  • Jeff porcaro recorded the drum track in this tune.

  • Is that right? I´ve heard that Steve Lukather is playing the guitar solo on the studio version, but I always thought it was Danny on the drums

  • Sure, Jeff Porcaro made the drum track for this tune only with chicago in the studio.

But he also contributed with Peter Cetera in his albums as soloist. Solcitude i think.

  • I saw them a few months after this was filmed when they came to Dallas. I wish I had paid more attention to the show, but was with a very cute girl ;-)

  • would have been a pretty good concert

  • great keyboards plucky

  • still a great song !!!

  • Peter left this band so long ago , the music of Chicago is a legacy and the replacement sounds great .The same with Three Dog Night , the music still sounds great and I am glad bands continue on

  • Chicago and Peter Cetera parted ways years ago. Everyone knows that. A difference in musical direction. They have ALL moved on. Chicago doesn't need him. And YES Jason Scheff is an awesome replacement for PC. PC is not the voice of Chicago, and hasn't been in years. Move on, people. The band has.

  • INDEED!!!!

  • One of the keys to people moving on is for Chicago themselves to move on. jason Scheff is very under-used as a songwriter when 98.77675% of what he does is sing the songs that Peter Cetera mde famous in the first place.

I always find it amusing when people complain that "fans don't move on". The problem is Chicago hasn't. Different singer, but same tunes as when Peter was in the band.

  • Its time for Peter Cetera and Chicago to reunite.... Its time... The tour would be huge... Jason Schemp is NO Peter Cetera, not even close.... No offense to him.... If Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth can get back together then this reuniion can happen. Pick up the phon Peter and give Robert Lamm & Co a call

  • Chicago 17 was 80s magic! It is too bad it would be Peter's final album with all the boys. I cannot believe how amazingly well they played in this video. They did so much good work in the 70s and even sounded better than ever in the 80s. Hail Chicago! I am so glad they are still making albums.

  • I like scheff better then cetera

  • Chicago is a great band with great talent overall!! But Peter Cetera really gave Chicago a name. Great Vid.. Blessings

  • Ah truly love yuh COOOMMMPAANNNEYYY

  • Peter Cetera give Robert Lamm and Chicago a call and get this thing back together....

  • compared with the album version a bit more rock in it...

  • I saw chicago in the 70's at the zenith of their career, with Terry and they flat out tore it up. They still had it here especially Peter. Someday I hope he gets back to the bass and records some new stuff. Dude is amazing....now only if he'd get back to Chi... oh well I can dream

  • I will say this version is much better than the studio version. Better bass lines and more energy!

  • Mostly the same basslines, just louder. But they do kick ass.

  • hahah...love the red jumpsuit. ;p

    awesome song though.

  • Twas 1984 my friend.

  • Peter made that red jumpsuit sexy! --<3

Proud Fan Of Chicago 1968 thru 1985.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • Food for thought. Cetera is 40 years old here...at what age was he in his prime? I have seen him rock out at 26 he was so good....and he had so much success after 1985....thoughts? Or was chicago 16/17 his true prime? The vid of feeling stronger every day is mesmerizing.

  • By prime, do you mean commercial or vocal? He was at his vocal prime from Chicago VI to X in my opinion. Commercially, he was at his peak from Chicago 16/17.

  • I meant vocally, but you can certainly tell with 16/17 how much experience and charisma he has on stage. My fave video is the Feeling Stronger one on youtube from the studio. Vocally he is just perfection. I do think it's sad he gave up the bass when he went solo. he went from rock and roller to balladeer.

  • My favorite thing about Cetera is that he never seemed to just go through the motions. It seemed that any rock n' roll Cetera had in him was stamped out during his solo career sadly.

  • Jason should try playing the bass lines Peter played during "Want you to know, one thing's for certain".

  • I keep re-watching this vid just to see Pete sing and play this difficult bass line at the same time... dude was amazing.

  • What's funny is he told Bass Player magazine he wasnt the most adept bass player. BULLSHIT!

He seemed very modest in the interview and didnt seem to boast himself as a bassist. But it shows here he had talent.

  • I totally agree!!!

  • Sorry to disagree, but this particular song's not actually that challenging a bass part. And I'm not saying he's a bad player, but yes, there are much more adept players out there. What makes him such an amazing musician is his total package, good chops with a great voice, and as you can see here, rock star swaggar.

  • Shame the voice is no longer with Chicago. I have followed them since the 70's and they are just not the same without Cetera

  • Cetera is such an awesome singer. He plays and sings at the same time with sme crazy shit. He doesn't play bass anymore though.

  • he has good voice!

  • Je l'avais oubliée celle là! Je cherchais Stay The Night de Billy Ocean et je tombe sur celle là : très bon aussi.

Excuse me but i speak english like a spannish cow, so i prefer write in french, sorry!

  • wishing they would release this on dvd

  • This kicks so much ASS!!!!! :D Love it! Just love it!

  • Pinnick reminds me so much of Kath for some reason...

  • Heavy guy like Kath.

  • What an amazing voice...I just find this song to be really dated. Like most people I find that after Cetera left Chicago, new material was pretty damn awful (Chicago 19 is almost unbearable and 18 isn't much better). Honestly, though, after Terry Kath died I think the soul of Chicago also died...and that was 5 albums before Chicago 16

  • As great as Chicago performed on this "17" tour, for anyone who caught any of the shows, this was the tune that brought the house down each nite.

By this point Cetera was a riveting stage presence and this was his in concert spotlight moment. You can see why. He's in superb voice and his bass playing is crisply in the pocket.

  • Peter Cetera rocks! I love Chicago! They rock! I listen to their music all thetime. They get 5 stars!

  • Cetera is in fine voice here!

  • he's still in fine voice ;) saw him less than a week ago

  • I don't doubt he was - for someone in their 60's. It's admirable he continues to do concerts and entertain fans. But when I speak of "fine voice", I mean the vocal power of this tune, Next Time I fall, early Chicago, etc.

  • oh ok =) ^_^

  • BTW, he kicked ass on the bass during this performance. Great speed, precision, and just overall he was amazing! I'M TALKIN PETER CETERA HERE! PETER FREAKIN CETERA!

  • I'm not 'twisted' over it, nor am I against what you wrote eariler. You said it the best,"He's just talented, period."

Hands down, that goes without saying.

    Well said!

Proud Fan Of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • He certainly WASN'T lipsynching here, musicispower84! Certainly not. He's on fire here, as well as in every performance in this particular concert. His singing is perfection, his playing is perfection, the whole damn concert is perfection. Can't get enough, as stated by me before, his killer loud a** bass! Cetera is the man!

Proud Fan of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • I know he's not. My point was he is so great live he stays true to the original style of the studio recorded vocal that he could pull it off perfectly and without (I said WITHOUT) sounding like he's lipsynching. I know it's all talent and power comin from him right here. Believe me, vocal music is the only thing I'm talented at. My ear is tuned like his voice. I just wish I had both gifts. LOL. Anyway I know he's clearly NOT lipsynching. Dont get it twisted my friend. He's just talent, period.

  • And playing this bass line while singing lead is not easy!

  • Indeed! I'm currently learning how to play guitar too and doing so isn't easy to sing them together. But I'm starting to get the hang of singing "if you leave me now" with guitar. So wish me luck. Someday I'll get a camera when I get good and post it here.

  • To be honest, Peter is not playing the whole bass line himself (check at 0:55, his right arm isn't even on the fretboard), it is doubled on synth bass (as it is on the record) as you might notice at 1:42 and also from 2:20 to 2:30.

That said, he's a very good bass player and an unbeatable singer. I don't think Jason can get even close to Peter's talent, I know all the "old" fans will agree.

BTW, does anybody know who the guitar player is? He rocks!

    Greetings from Paris France.

  • It's Chris Pinnick.

Proud Fan of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • I had read this Pinnick name before but didn't know what the guy looked like. Great guitarist!

    Thanx bro!

  • you should check out Mike Landau, he play the guitar solo on the album! He is awesome!

  • That's very observant. I'll go one step further. I would assume he's just miming the bass altogether so he can focus on singing the song. Lee is playing the bass line on keys altogether. Chicago's not above that sort of thing. They use pre-recorded vocals and percussion in their live shows, and they've mimed or partially mimed countless television appearances. (See the infamous "If You Leave Me Now" outing on the old Bill Cosby show.)

  • i just noticed the bass line thing too though. but he really is playing when it looks like he is. thats a shame though. i dont like it when players do that. and cetera was a really good bass player

  • PC is actually playing the bass while singing, he's not "miming". The bass lines are not pre-recorded; the keyboardists are playing the bass line and PC is doing his own selective playing.

  • It's being doubled. Check out 2:28. There's real bass on top on key bass.

  • Nah it's the same bass im a bass player myself we have more then just one string. sounds like the d string he hit right there then went back up on top on low e string mate.

  • If you watch all of Chicago's videos, Cetera does some hard shit on bass while he sings. You can even hear proof of that on the recordings as well. Agree with ya all the way.

  • Whoa man! Peter Cetera was amazing on this live performance! He was not only solid with his vocal performance but he made it well enough to the point where he doesnt sound like he's really lipsynching at the same time. No one could pull this song off like that! The instrumentation was amazing for this too! Just phenomenal!

  • If Terry Kath had been around this song would have been perfect. This guitarist is no slouch though.

  • Great added solo's!

  • This is amazing! I love it when Cetera performed in the original key as close as he could to the originaly way he sang the recording without sounding like he was lipsynching. He was rockin it here. Love this!

  • wow

  • cool

  • I thought so, I just didn't want to assume.

    Again,

Thank you kindly --> Chi-Kid. I adore this 'live' performance of 'Stay The Night' as well as the music video! If you happen to have anything else from this excellent concert, please post!

Proud Fan of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • haha, is that David Bowie on vocals...hahaha I love Cetera...is it true he got his voice messed up a little while ago?? anyways, i love chicago, R.I.P. Terry Kath, truley an underrated guitarist (i know that's Pinnick right there)

    =VH=

  • The bass sound in this is exceptional. In the studio/album version of this song, it sounds so buried behind everything else. Nice that you can hear how talented Peter was at the instrument. This right here, is what's driving me to become a bass player!

    Thank you kindly, Chi-Kid.

Proud Fan of Chicago 1969 thru 1984.

    The 'Cetera' Era.

  • Yeah, I love how loud the bass is in this mix. It's probably not intentional, but I love it as a happy accident.

I can't fathom why he would ever want to lay his bass down. It gives him so much extra flava in performances, as well as something to do with his hands so he doesn't have to shimmy around rubbing the air like in the "Glory of Love" video.

  • I've played this song live and let me tell you... this is song is very difficult to sing and play the bass on at the same time, especially the refrain! When he was on, Peter was absolutely fantastic.

  • You have great videos Chicago kid. Thanks, Diana.

  • Does anyine know what kind of strings Peter was playing with at this point in time?

Also, thanks for posting this, ChicagoKid

  • *anyone

  • He was using roundwounds by this time. It the 60's and 70's he used LaBella flatwounds.

  • chicagokid thanks man,a chicago fan from the days of CTA,actually saw them at Mothers...RIP Terry THe best man

  • I always liked this tune.

Nice to see Mr.Pinnick in a video. Is there more with him in it?

  • That was cool, thanks again chicagokid.

  • This is an awful song. I love the band, but this tune just reeks.

  • Great song ...and those jumpsuits are sexy!

  • Pete is a kick ass bassist

  • Ah... I should've picked up on that. I agree it's not fair to have Keith sing Peter Cetera's old material.

  • Im a complete a Heavy Metal Music Fan, but this band its one of my favorite Old School Rock bands.. Peter Cetera voice is the best¡¡

  • Let's all stop taking about the "founding" or the "new" members. Can't you all realize which Band are we talking about? Chicago is the greatest ever! What does it takes to be there? The're all GREAT musicians my respect for everyone. Keep on 'kid!

  • I think Cetera is better at hittin' those high notes than his replacement Scheff. You just can't beat the original. Kudos for Jason for being #2 though, he's doing fine with the band...

  • Its David Bowie!

  • this is way better than jason scheffs version live

  • Really? Actually, I was just thinking that Jason has W-A-Y surpassed Peter...

  • Surpassed Peter?? Bless your poor little heart...Although I respect Jason, he simply can't touch Cetera in the vocal department.

  • I wish they still had the original drummer he is so much better than the one they have now

  • actually i disagree with that statement..Tris Imboden is a marvelous drummer...he's more diverse than Danny Seraphine..that's why Imboden is known as the Salsa King on top of his title of Chicago Drummer

  • Tris is a real pro and may well be more diverse than Danny Seraphine, but Danny is one of the true stylists in drumming history.

Tris' style never fully clicked with live Chicago with a "lighter" approach and drum fills that just don't quite elevate the music the way Danny's masterful and lyrical approach to fills did.

Danny Seraphine propelled Chicago and the band has simply never had the same energy and power live since he "departed".

  • I actually agree with both statements, LOL. Imboden is excellent, very talented. But Danny is an original in both senses: original in his style, and original to Chicago. His "loose-tight" style is his, and fits Chi to a T.

  • By the way, is that Lee singing the background vocal in this particular video?

  • Lee did more backing vocals back then. Seen Chicago in Sioux Falls, SD. back in 2003 and Lee did a good job covering Peter's lines in "Wishing You Wer'e Here". It was rather amazing.

  • Actually, Lee sang Terry's old lead vocal on Wishing You Were Here (I saw them the same year in Louisville)- I think it was Jason who sang Peter's part.

  • I'm pretty sure Peter Cetera said in an obscure interview that *none* of the members of Chicago were on the original "Stay the Night" record. Chicago does a pretty good job of covering itself....

  • Kind of sucks when you are one of the 3 founding members and get booted after a vote initiated by the 2 newest members of the band. Danny is still the better drummer. Took him 15 years to get over the shock.

  • Any video for Livin' in the Limelight? I now recall reading Steve Lukather played the solo on that 1980 debut album from Peter!

  • The solo is one of my favs, yet the live interpretation fails to capture the magic, for one, it's too flat and even sounding... during the video for example, it soars with the visuals. Steve "Luke" is one of Eddie VH's friends.

  • Have you got any recordings of that? Sounds interesting to me...

As for Lukather @ Chicago 17 - he's not credited as such in my booklet..?!

  • Poor Chris Pinnick, I think he deserved to be an official member of the group, his playing style seemed to fit the band better than Donnie Dacus. He looks all depressed back in the corner in these videos.

  • I absolutely LOVE Chicago, and I THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart for having the concert clips!

  • This is f***ing awesome!!! Thank you! If you have any more from this concert (or any from the 16/17 era) please post!

  • I just want to say "Thank You" ChicagoKid1969. I always wanted to see video from the Chicago 17 tour . This is the first time I have ever seen this song from the 17 tour. It made my day. Thanks again!

    Ceteraboy1

  • One of my personal favorites here! Jason can NOT beat Cetera's voice! Peter was the rock and without him now, Chicago isnt as big as they should be with Jason!

  • At least your honest

  • Thanks so much for this post. if you have more please post from a BIG chicago fan
