its a good camera but it has a real problem with bluring out the background on portrait shots. but only works if the background is very very far away or completely white.
I only trust reviews from enthusiasts, hobbiests, amateus, and people with who aren't getting paid to give them.
When was the last time a salesman admitted the flaws in a product to help you make an informed decision?
It's just like IMDB. Ever notice how they don't publish user comments for B movies for a few weeks till you've gone to find out the hard way anyway at the theatre?
There's money not only in writing good press, but delaying bad press. Official sources aren't always reliable.
a it does the same thing but when yu do digital zoom on full resolution you are losing resolution but in the other mode it is already low resolution so it doesn't go any lower its a gimmick for sure lol comment back
Yes it's definitely a sales gimmick. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed.
Basically you mess around in the menus for a long time, and how are you rewarded? You're telling the camera to deliberately drop resolution (and lose image detail) so it doesn't interpolate (educated guess) what should be there? That's hilarious!
You'd have to be crazy to use that, and crazier still to think it's actually a selling point.
"OMG LOL MY CAMERA CAN GIVE ME BLUR INSTEAD OF FICTIONAL DETAIL LOL!!111"
I'm trying to decide between these three "prosumer" digital camera and need some advice:
Nikon Coolpix P6000
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50
Canon PowerShot G10
I don't want an SLR because of their size, and the fact that for simply viewing on a computer monitor (which I will 99% of the time) the extra photo quality may not be as noticeable as it would be in print?
What are people's experiences on the noise levels and general photo quality at low light levels with these three cameras? Thanks
For a number of years I've been a big fan of the Coolpix line (my first one was 990). I also have the Canon Digital Rebel XTi and Canon 50D. I wanted a compact camera with lots of manual controls. I went to the store to get the Nikon P6000 and ended up buying Canon G10. Features and layout of controls is much more usable in the G10. P6000's pop-up flash alone with it crazy placement right under your fingertip is enough to make you consider a different camera.
You didn't mention the fact the sensor is the same size as the tiny one found in the G9, so increasing the resolution to an extremely high 14.9MP leads to a reduction in low light level performance.
If you splice up the same area into small pieces to increase resolution without spending money on increasing the size of the sensor itself as well- each light-sensitive piece of the sensor will be smaller and therefore far less sensitive in low light.
I'm trying to find a new compact camera. I'm an enthusiast, rather than a pro, and I'll be upgrading from an old Nikon 5mp Coolpix. (im wanting something with a bit more power, but not the expense or bulk of a DSLR).
In the Premium Compact range, is this the top camera? Would you prefer a different one? If so, why?
Any one of you guys who have the G10 also own a DSLR? How does the image quality really compete? I've read reviews but I'm not convinced. I have the 5D with a few L lenses and it does get heavy to carry around everywhere and more importantly ruins a lot of street photography / candid shots as soon as it comes out of the bag.
I own the xsi and g10 and must say that the g10 competes for the quality. Though the xsi does pull ahead, its very impressive to see a point and shoot show such amazing quality. Unfortunately, shooting speed is slow, but if you are doing everything but sports, this is your camera. Another point to note, the digital zoom does a great job correcting the loss of pixels. I have taken many excellent shots at the 20x (5x o and 4x d). Enjoy!
I would like your opinion on the video capability of the G10. It doesn't seem anywhere near as good as the G9...I don't know if I'm doing something wrong.
I have just bought a G10 based on your great review. Have a question though, does the camera record RAW in auto mode? I can't seem to get mine to do that.
You may want to try to set it to P-mode. I'm not to familiar with the G10, but in the EOS series Auto mode does support RAW so it could be the same case with the Powershot G series. P-mode set Aperture/Shutter time automatic like Auto mode, but has the possibly to record in RAW, set ISO and exposure compensation, although it will automatically choose values for these itself if you do not tell it otherwise.
That's correct TubeUser333, RAW is for more advanced users so won't work in the point and shoot setting. Program does a similar job to auto (handling the exposure) but opens up more features in the menu. =:O)
Wish the next one will have a vari angle LCD, Wider angle lense: at least: 27mm, more zoom, lower MP for better noise reduction. HD capability and AVCHD compression. Faster or multiple processor for better continuous shooting. Smaller size , fit in pants and rechargable battery. (someone please sent this to canon) if you agree with me
Thanks Mike that was very helpful, it sure sounds like a great camera, am just a bit worried that I will remember all that when I want to take a quick photo :)
These G series are so overpriced. Only good thing i like is the compact size but an sx10 has alot better features. I can't believe the these UGLY looking cameras cost more than the sx10. They look like an early 80's toy camera. They perform bad in low light. For the price its Urrrrrghhh.
Is this the best option for a consumer wishing to get more into photography but is still not ready to step up into the entry level Dslr market? I heard the luminix L3 is the G10 main rival? I want a light camera with the best image quality but has functions in which I have full control.
I have one question. when pushing down on the shutter button, is it instant? could you please compare the shutter speed of the g10 to a canon eos rebel xti or 40d
If you haven't prefocused then no compact is as fast as a dslr.
With prefocusing, you can get a lag time of around 0.12seconds which is actually a bit slow for todays compacts, but only slower than the standard 0.08seconds so it's not by much.
No they don't. Digital camcorders take cassettes. I've not heard about 35mm digital film, maybe it's a videography terminology that I'm unfamiliar with.
great demo. some useful tips. cheers.

I don't get why a lower quality due to poor resolution rather than interpolation is any better?
Sounds like a gimmick. I bet if you did a double blind test you couldn't tell the two apart.

Gr8 review Matt thanks,
I`m considering buying a G10 - how will it compare to my Nikon D70 which doesnt produce photo quality anywhere near my brothers older Canon 10D.
any comments are welcomed - cheers

If your D70 isn't producing exceptional quality pictures, then YOU aren't doing it right.

The G10 will have no chance against the 5D and L lenses. I understand the weight issue but the size of the sensor can't compete.
The G10 would be good for street candids if you can keep it at low ISO.
