Read the novel, Rescue at Pine Ridge, the story of the rescue of the famed 7th Cavalry by the Buffalo Soldiers, and visit website; rescue at pine ridge. com. The novel embodies Native Americans, Outlaws and Buffalo Soldiers, in the days of the Native American Wars with the approach USA. Story is about, brutality, compassion, reprisal, bravery, heroism and gallantry.
buffalo soldiers are not written out of history. the army to this day still maintain many of there traditions and symbols. in vietnam the 9th cavarly were one of the most feared and respected unit in that war. to say they are written out of history is false. the stetson hat that they were wearing are still being worn by drill instructors and some police departments around the country.
@black10872 Thank you for commenting. Remember though that in both ww1 and ww2 black troops were looked uuuuuuupon as useless and unable to fight and were reviled by the army. The entire proud history of these troops was forgotten and tossed aside to facilitate the propaganda of institutional racism.
@nublackmusic yes they were looked upon as insufficent and not battle worthy by many white officers and soldiers that did not fight with them. the racist propaganda at the time did looked the other when it came to black troops. but being that general pershing was the senior commander in france. the racist media could not really write them out because pershing personally fought with black troops in his earlier days patrolling the western plains. thats why he was nicknamed "BLACKJACK"
@nublackmusic also the nickname blackjack was meant to be a negative term for pershing because of his many years serving with them. but he was very proud of that nickname because he quickly realized that these troopers were the best and most professional soldiers in the entire army. and they saved his ass more than once. the racist media no doudt tried to write them out but, there legendary deeds and actions prevented this.
All-Negro cavalry unit. And they did not Fight the Indains they fought the US Gov. Buffalo Soldiers did not mistreat Native-Americans and were not responsible for their removal from reservations. I am So Sick of all these dam perpetuating LIES ALLOUT LIES.THERE ARE BLACK PEOPLE MIX WITH INDAN IN THE USA FAMILY FIGHTING FAMILY LIES .

I guess you forget Pershing. "Black Jack" commanding the 10th ? It was not bad for him to serve with the elite regiment. He became CO American Expeditionary Force in WW I.
Ford never cast a white as an Native American after the 1920's, going against conventionalities. From Stagecoach on, he usually only used Navajo Indians, and they were very greatful for it.
Only on his death bed he give phase...when he got back to the United States, he called them cowards. It wouldn't of been prudent for a white man wanting to be President of these United States, to declare they were saved by a bunch of Negroes. Guess he wanted to make right before meeting the creator.

How do you keep a people down? You never let them know their history. The 7th Cavalry got their butts in a sling again after Little Big Horn, fourteen years later, the day after the Wounded Knee Massacre. If it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, there would of been a second massacre of the 7th. Read, and visit site/history, rescue at pine ridge. com

Strode was terrific in this western. I saw this as a kid and have always remembered his performance. This and other shows and books about them encouraged me to want to learn more about them. The Buffalo Soldiers provided a valuable service to those on the frontier and they deserve every honor. Thanks for posting this.
Wonderful film! At every turn this film was full of surprises. Thanks for the post.

This is a John Ford western. Most of his westerns were filmed at Monument Valley, on the Navajo reservation. Those were probably, real indians.

Actually he praised them in his book, published before he ran for president.

The buffalo soldiers were not written out of history. In particular, Theodore Roosevelt had great prase for the 10th Cavalry in Cuba.
