I remember seeing this. As a little kid though, the memory was very vague. I thought it was a dream I had, but glad to see it was real. I just remember Don Knotts and Andy Griffith, from the roster, because I was watching "Andy Griffth" re-runs. Later in the week, it showed Dick Van Dyke talking to the "Peanuts" gang. The opening had him in an animated house and Lucy walked in asking, "You called?" The ending was him standing on an animated cake, with the gang dancing around him.
I never liked when a woman wore mens tuxedo. Just A tuxedo Dinner Jacket & fedora that Judy Garland wore looked classy for her musical number, is different. Judy who wore that in one movie and a couple times had her own CBS series sunday nights at 9 pm during the 1963-64 season. Sally Struthers looked ridiculous in a full Tux. But look at the CBS alumni was Astounding!
I love this very much. I am only 14 years old and I wish I could go back in time into the 60's and 70's to see how great it was. I would love to go back and live where life was so much simpler and easier and nicer. I love Mary Tyler Moore, Bea Arthur, Lucille Ball etc. They are all in my fav shows: The MTM show, The Golden Girls, I Love Lucy and I LOVE the Dick van Dyke show. I guess u culd say i love MTM!!!
Great line up of male actors, but look at the great, experienced, talented female sitcom/comedy stars who headlined or shared the top billing of shows in those days - Bea Arthur, Jean Stapleton, Betty White, Isabel Sanford, Esther Rolle, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, MTM, Linda Lavin....all in their 40s & 50s here - when real experience and talent mattered more. If wonderful Tina Fey didn't write create 30 Rock herself she wouldnt have a sitcom on the air I think. Back then talent > demographics
This kind of thing makes me tear up. I love it! I'd love to see the whole series. Yes, many many people here are dead now but forever in reruns and movies and in our hearts.
Many celebrites including Ed Bradley, Sandy Duncan, Arlene Francis, Allen Funt, Valerie Harper, Alfred Hitchcock, Carroll O'Connor, Dan Rather, Telly Savalas, The Smothers Brothers, Jean Stapleton, Nancy Walker, Bea Arthur, Lucille Ball, Bob Barker, Bill Cosby, Bob Denver, Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, Art Linkletter, Danny Thomas, Demond Wilson, Jamie Farr, Steve Allen, Mary Tyler Moore, Danny Kaye, Bob Schieffer, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett, Walter Cronkite, Bob Keeshan, Jim Nabors, and others.
I remember this week-long special well! It did seem like such a big deal, esp. with MTM and Carol Burnett going off the air ... man, it was all so simple and sweet back then...
I have an old episode of Match Game 78when Gene Rayburn appeared on the show dressed in a tux,and made a plug for this special, and Richard Dawson said he was going to be there to represent "Hogan's Heroes". Did he appear?
And the way Bea Arthur came out with that mad face was funny, along with Sherman Hemsley's famous walk. Priceless
@jlucci1177 EXACTLY! TV nowadays SUCKS! people can't act, nothing is funny and the writers write horrible scripts! But thank god for Youtube, we can watch all of our favorite shows, and movies! :) I hardly even watch my TV these days, and I am 26 years old! I don't fit in with my generation for sure! my favorite shows are Bewitched, Maude, and Golden Girls!
Yes, she looked pretty good even on "Everybody Loves Raymond" a few years back, playing the recurring character of "Pat MacDougall," the Brad Garrett character's ("Robert's") mother in-law.
Unfortunately, Mary Tyler Moore has started to show her aging for some time now. But given her age and diabetes condition, still pretty trim and good-looking. Foolishly, she had a nose job, and. why remains a mystery? Most women get nose jobs to acquire the perfect-shaped nose Mary always had.
Its scary at looking at all the lengendary people and shows 9 had. I change my mind, at cbs's height nbc at their height could not hang. CBS's in the 1970's versus NBC in the mid80's to early 90's ??? You make the call. NBC didnt have the bonifide legendary's like CBS had.
This special was a celebration of a great network that was at the height of it's popularity, however it was at an empass, Mary Tyler Moore had ended, Maude, Carol Burnett show, Bob Newhart show, and Kojack would end
that year; Richard Thomas & Will Geer would be absent from the Waltons, Carl Riener & Sally Struthers would depart All in the family, and Rhoda and Good Times would be
to have the great Alfred Hitchcock toddle onto that stage(it was very near the end of his life) along with some major and a lot of minor tv stars is surreal to say the least...not in the same league to put it mildly!
I wonder how many people taped this when it aired? I was lucky enough to get original Betas from an Ebay seller, I've transferred them to DVD and it's been circulating amongst the traders (if you have a copy from channel 9 in DC it's probably my transfer!) I've wanted to give copies of this to the local library but there's probably some copyright thing in the way of that.
Wow! Its amazing how many stars they got to show for this! So many now no longer with us too! Gleason probably was being Gleason and that's why he wasn't there. Biggest stars who were gone by this point? Jack Benny and Gracie Allen? I am sure there are others, not to mention a lot of early radio CBS stars too.
NBC at its highest point (mid 80's to early mid 90's) couldn't hang with CBS's 1970's lineup. All in the Family, Maude, Mary Tyler Moore, Rhona, One day at a Time, Kojak, Goodtimes, Jeffersons and didn't the entire Roots miniseries also come on this station too lol????
wow...I was born years after this special aired, but I grew up watching most, if not all, of these people in reruns, so this definitely made me teary-eyed! Thanks for posting!
Actually, many of these stars are alive and well. Those who are not live on in our memories and can be introduced to the younger folks thanks to syndication!
This was back when you actually had to have REAL talent to get on a network TV show. This was before the scourge of reality television. When you only had three networks, this is how it was. Now...with 600 channels with 24 hours of airtime to fill, it's very different.
This was right after Ellen Corby had returned to "The Waltons" after recovering from her stroke, but she looked great here. Will Geer died in early 1978, so this must have been filmed not long before his death.
Great clip. It's pretty neat how they sorted out the stars by day. Back then television knew how to make the audience feel lkie they were watching something special, today everything's so quickly edited and the heart is gone.
Alright, I have a question about this video. At 3:00, Vivian Vance is on. I had heard she had suffered a stroke the year before and was partially paralyzed. I'm assuming I am mistaken? And, by the way, great clip!
No, you are not mistaken. Vivian Vance had suffered a stroke. It caused some minor paralysis, mostly on her face. But the following year, she lost her battle with cancer.
I remember this so well and always wondered if there was footage. CBS ran a week long of specials 'CBS: On the Air" and every night they featured a retrospective of that night's programming through the years. Yes, you will never see this kind of star power assembled on one stage ever again and many of these stars are no longer with us.
@richiguy CBS will be celebrating their 85th anniversary in 2013, and they will probably do a special then, with their current roster of "talent" (for lack of a better word) and their older alumni, but it won't be as memorable and meaningful as this one. They don't have that powerhouse of talent now that they did back then.
It's odd that they didn't have Desi Arnaz there (unless they invited him and he couldn't make it). Even though we ALL love Lucy, "I.L.L." was at least as much due to his effort as Lucy's.
i agree. there won't be any stars like them anymore. this was the end of an era. and just look at mary tyler moore. she's just gorgeous and so beautiful.
Wow, so many great TV stars, including Lassie! CBS really was the best network until the mid 90's when they cancelled Dr. Quinn, in my opinion. Now I watch ABC shows.
