This scene scared me as a kid, and its dark tone still gets to me at 20 years of age.
For me, the buildup to the Marleys' reveal got me on edge, and even though Statler and Waldorf are cracking jokes as usual, their quips have a malicious edge to them that makes me shiver a bit.
It's a nice change of pace, considering this is marketed as a kids' film. This movie has stayed one of my favorites, largely on account of this scene and the Ghost of Christmas Future scene, which is also quite dark.

@RichardOnADragon well actually worse given what they've said in the song. they were greedy, evil, conniving, and heartless towards the poor. in other words they went to hell
It's sad to think that if this was a true story that Jacob (and Robert) Marley would still today be suffering with the chains and forever more. I always felt bad for Jacob (and Robert).
what I love about this is that in the Christmas Carol there was only Jacob Marley. So what do they name the 2nd one in the Muppet parody? Robert (Bob) Marley! FTW!
Ebeneezer Scrooge said the same thing to Jacob Marley's ghost in the book "A Christmas Carol". Jacob ignored the remark instead of telling Scrooge to "leave comedy to the bears". :)
@NaiTaiDai Haha. Yeah, sometimes. And also, Dave's Waldorf sounds a lot like the pig viking he performed in the "In the Navy" skit on the Muppet show.
@multiz007 Agreed but they really had no choice...Jim Henson was the voice of Waldorf but died in 1990 and Richard Hunt was Statler but died before this movie was done...Considering this was the first movie since both their deaths I think that Dave Goelz and Jerry Nelson didn't do that bad of a job
@multiz007 Yeah, its too bad that Jim and Richard passed away before this movie could be made. But I think Dave Goelz and Jerry Nelson did a fine job with the characters.
the 7 people that disliked this have no sense of christmas, and have no childhood. this is a classic of all time and beats just about any holiday movie hands down
But even with that caveat, Michael Caine played a good Scrooge. Although he had some outbursts, largely to set off comic scenes, he held his own against the muppets, and seemed to be a Scrooge resigned to his lot, not finding pleasure in anything.
Scott on the other hand seemed powerful even as an old man, and really enjoyed wielding that power over others like it was a contest of will.
Unlike Albert Finney, neither played the part like a craven coward.
I love how this version pulls no punches. It was seriously scary and still is, even though I'm 21. It uses big words. It doesn't treat kids like idiots. Awesome. My favorite version of A Christmas Carol.
"What a terrible pun! Where do you get those jokes?"
For years I didn't realize they were referencing the book, which makes these lines even more hilarious. As far as I'm concerned, this is the definitive film version of Dickens' masterpiece. Watching this film has been a tradition since I was very young and now reading the book every year has become a tradition as well.
YES! I love this part. I love how the camera sloooowly pans around the chair while eerie music takes up all the sound! That particular part is so much like a good horror movie. And then of course you its safe when you realize its just Statler and Waldorf. But I remember being a kid in the theater and I was terrified until the muppets showed up.
Michael Caine was a fantastic enough Ebeneezer Scrooge for a serious adaptation. He was even better than Patrick Stewart. His being the genuine role, surrounded by Muppets and their hilarious, top-notch, material is what made the film.
This is an very Jim Henson take on the classic story A Christmas Carol. Startler and Waldorf is so hilarious as Jacob Marly and his brother Robert Marley. I laughed watching this scene.
