On this date in 1960 {Mar. 7th} "Sink The Bismarck" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #3 and spent 18 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 28th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1960 chart...
Reached #3 on Billboard's Country chart and was #1 on the Canadian Singles chart
When 1st released 'Bismarck' was misspelled as 'Bismark' on the record label; later corrected...
Inaccurate but amazing none the less. How the Bismark sank is still up for debate. <3 Johnny Horton though. He had to make up to the Brits for Tha Battle of New Orleans with this song hee hee.
Let's give a big ol' navy salute to the gallant crews of the Hood and the Bismarck! No hagglling over dates and who was involved with what and on what date. These are seamen who went to sea and never returned home, they died in the service of their countries. And thanks to Johnny Horton to paying homage to them with this great song.
I love listening to Johnny Horton and I'm seventeen X3 That just goes to show that there are still kids my age who still appreciate the classics of country music like George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, etc and some of the newer singers within the last thirty years like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Alabama, etc before it became more rap, pop and that kinda thing =/
the only problem with this song is that in 1941 the war had not just begun it had been going on for three years while the states sat back and stayed out of it because ?? they where scared ???
@GojuSenseiMike Not so. You see, America was still an isolationist country at that time. The memory of the first World War was still fresh in America's mind, and we wanted to avoid another one, thank you. Plus, there was a little thing called the "Great Depression" going on. We were more focused on making sure people had jobs and food than fighting a war at that point. Of course, that changed on 12/7/1941, what with Pearl harbor.
@GojuSenseiMike It says MAY of 1941, and the US wasn't in unitl December. This song actually is about the war before the involvement of the US. But you are correct that the war had in fact not "just begun".
@thinkersrock69 Even by British standards, it's weird to consider May 1941 as "just begun," considering that German/British hostilities escalated in 1940 (prompting the U.S. to pass the Lend-Lease Act in January 1941 to supply Britain with military equipment).
@powerdriller10 Well personally I like it, the British were a huge part in both world wars and I like hearing about the things that happened from there end of it, I actually wish there was more of WW2 history BEFORE pearl harbor at highschool but sadly Americans only seem to care about Americans so oh well.
One interesting point about the battle with the Bismarck was that slow, obsolete Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers struck the worst blows agains the battleship with torpedos. If not for a quirk of fate in which the Bismarck's rudder was jammed, she might have escaped.
Whats Wierd Is The Lyric "Guns As Big As Steers And Shells As Big As Trees" i mean the guns were as big as trees ause trees are bigger than steers this guy got it mixed up but its still awesome
Great song though very historically inaccurate. it was a lucky torpedo which struck Bizmarks rudder. the rudder got stuck so the Bizmark could only go in circles. The brits could not sink her though they tried for hours. eventually every gun on the Bizmark was destroyed and her crew scuttled her.

my grandfather died on the bismark i think that they should have not made a song about it cause 2.100 brave sailors never came back
taulbeeno7 1 year ago
@taulbeeno7 I lost two great uncles during the battle of Guadalcanal One was Navy USS Chevalier
the other was Army Air Corps. However I believe it is good to make these songs. It allows people that didn't have family involved to hear about it.
