  • I use egg shells and used coffee grounds, on top of compost....seems to work well..

  • @PianoManFX ... What ever works is the way to do it. The compost prpbably had a lot to do with it.........Donald

  • I want to buy a tomatoe plant, the ones that i saw said hybrid should i buy that,or is there another kind,i'm new at this, I LIve IN HouSton Thanks

  • I planted hybrids for years and may do so again. I'm going open pollinated so I can save my seeds for next year. There's really nothing wrong with hybrid plants...... Donald

  • Donald, Do you have a problem with the birds getting to those tomato's right when they start having color? If you do what do you recommend, bird netting?

Our neighbors have had tomato's disappear from his tomato plants... squirrels were carrying them off!!! Our tomato's in our patio plants were safe, but we were thinking of growing them in the garden next year.

  • The birds did peck on a few of mine but really not enough to worry about. If it would become a serious problem I would certainly consider the bird netting or a cat that's not as lazy as mine....... Donald

  • yeah man, here in jersey our soil is pretty much stable with its nitro, and phosp, but with a little extra horse or cow manure it juust rockets off!!!, jerseys famous for its soil but other places its just to clay or coarse for an easy growing luxgery like we have, alsome vids man!!!!!!

  • It is nice to have good soil to work with. Glad you enjoy the vids...... Donald

  • webcajun, what would be the purpose of beatifullady's lime?

  • She does make an excellent point about testing your soil before adding lime. Only add lime if the soil test recommends it to adjust your PH.

Fertilizer on the other hand is a little different. Plants need and use an "X" amount of nutrients each growing season. To keep my soil fertile I add at least that amount each time I plant. It doesn't use it all and it'll start building up. That's why my garden space gets better and better each year.

  • Finally...A real gardener! Your videos are fantastic. My garden is only 50'x150' but it keeps me busy. Keep up the good work. John from Indiana.

  • A 50' x 150' is a big garden that can and will keep you busy. It should produce a lot of fresh vegetables for you and your family. Staying on top of the bugs and weeds which is not always as easy as it may seem.

  • Do you test your soil or do you just add fertilizer and lime every year? Without a test how do you no what and how much you need to put down?

  • No soil test. I add the amount of fertilizer recommended for the vegetable I am planting. One pint of 13-13-13 or 17-17-17 per 100 ft. of row is a good starting point. I'll add a sprinkle around each plant before watering or before a rain during the growing season. If broadcasting fertilizer, I'll apply at a rate of approx 500 lbs. per acre per year. There's approx 43,000 sq feet in an acre. Sweet Corn gets a little more.

  • I only have a 25 x 25 area that I plant every year. I ussualy till in a 50# bag of 10-10-10 every year with a bag of lime.
