@tylero1985 Yes. Telemark bindings are much more dangerous because they don't have a release mechanism. Even if they do release they will still fall with you because they are attached to your boots by ski leashes. Bad news if you're on extreme terrain.
@tylero1985 It might be with 75mm-bindings, but with the newer NTN-bindings you do have a "pop off-mechanism" which you can of course adjust to match your weight. NTN = new norm telemark. Look'em up! ;)
@tylero1985 No.There are telemark bindings with release function. You can have ski stoppers as well. Telemark equipment is found in a wide variety from old-school simple bindings to very burly stuff with stability similar to alpine gear.
My friend ... You are simply MAGIC!!! I'm just about to try that.... Pls call an ambulance ...!!!! Sure is not easy but it doesn't look impossible!!! LoL
@a3fvideo skiing is the best damn thing in the world. i love watching your videos and imagining i could be riding right now... in spring i´ve been on a ski trip in italy with all of my friends and it was the best time in my life. you have awesome driving skills
mad telemark skills! it may look easy, but anyone skiing telemark will agree with me that skiing backwards tele-style is soo much more difficult than, say, an icy, tourist-wrecked mogul slope...
@christianwestoo agreed, only thing keeping me from tele skiing is bad knees, one acl tear and reconstruction and a very small tear in my meniscus in my other knee. Tried it for a day and loved it but my knees just cant handle it. I stick to alpine but it definantly doesnt have the difficulty of telemark.
@phil656565 Friend, I too have meniscus tear but good acl. I am 62 tele tor 17 yrs. Believe it or not it is not hard on the knees. The physical pain is in the quads like doing walking lunges at the gym for an hour at a time. There are injuries with the new big boots but rarely to the knees, mostly the ankles. Give it a try but only if you want to for fun. If you are a good skier then intermediate tele comes very fast; advanced is a bitch with lots of work. Have fun whatever you do.
@flynfinn49 like i said i tried it for a day, put a pretty good amount of stress on my acl, i was at the intermediate level at the end of the day but my knee was swelled up pretty well. Alpine works great for me, i still do knee strengthening excercises every other day to prevent future injury. 65 days on the snow this year and will probably get two or three more, snows been amazing.
I alpined for about 10 years and then started to telemark about 10 years ago. I was frustrated with my alpine skiing not improving and enjoyed the rapid progress of learning something new. I loved telemarking so much I stopped alpine altogether. I couldn't say which requires more skill but for an unbiased point of view my partner (ex alpine examiner) says my alpine sucks and he thinks I tele pretty good. Strange but true! Perhaps cos I'm passionate about telemarking? It's all in the love!
I alpined for about 10 years and then started to telemark about 10 years ago. I was frustrated with my alpine skiing not improving and enjoyed the rapid progress of learning something new. Perhaps cos I'm passionate about telemarking? It's all in the love!
I am very interested in this aspect of telemark, but did not tried it yet because I still lack the equipment: can you tell me about this "old fashion" telemark, with straight skinny skies and light leather boots, which seams soo attractive, is it not too difficult in steep terrain or in deep powder, ice or breakable crust? It seems to me that in harsh conditions it is only for experts .. am I right?
I think skinny skis require more balance and skill because they have less sidecut and are much more narrow than the super- shaped skis of today. I ski mostly on the Karhu Guide which I consider to be fat, but they are not compared to many skis. When I want humility, I try to do turns on my double-camber, touring skis or my traditional, straight Karhu skis on more gentle terrain. Alinitto, your comment is right on.
@rockymountainwomen okay, modern skis are, hmm, more giving that the old ones, but there has to be a price (apart from the obvious economical POV ;).. humility is good, but what about their lightness, their flexibility, their confort ? I take it to be sooo very important, and it seems to be a forgotten subject in tele skis .. in this sens, the ATs seem much more sensible .. telemark does not deserve this brute force approach, telemark is an art, this should not be forgotten ..
@sloaiza81 Thanks, I usually use my brains to understand, that testosterone, I give it a different use ;) if should put it more reasonably we could communicate ..
@phil656565 as for the telemark in general I tried it on my own skin :) and I like it so much ..after 3 years of continuous practice it seems to me to seeing some light at the end of the tunnel (hopefully it's not the train . :) in the sense that the movements seem to be more and more effortless (somehow like in chi kong, a kind of internal energy..) in this sense I think that a light equipment though less giving in crust, steep or ice, will help conserving THAT energy, moving lighter, jumping..

gee, I've been doing 'newschool' tele for the last 6 or 7 years without knowing it! I'll give him the backwards stuff though, that's pretty hard, but really, who wants to ski backwards? Seriously, this is a dude going fast on green runs- so what?
mafiashadow ,sorry you are a idiot ,NEVER compare telemark and alpine,i really can tell, even if you ever tried telemark, yes you only tried i was born on skies(alpine crosscounty, short skies, carving even oldskool woodenskies ,i tried everything on frozen water) then snowboardet for about 18 years ,got to know telemark about 12 years ago and since 9 years nothing else, there is nothing comparable FREE YOUR HEEL MERCIE STEPHANE
damn i thought i could pick up tele pretty fast... i picked up snowboarding really fast after getting to the advanced intermediate level on alpines... i was hoping the feeling of ridin on snow would transfer over... eh gonna have to try it anyway
The only main thing which is different between alpine and telemark is the position on a ski compared to the other one when you turn. Kneeling down is pretty easy, and the top of your body has the same position. Really, when you know how to alpine ski, you can learn tele quite fast.
Anyone who wants to learn to Tele can. I think it's best if you never alpine first, but what do I know. It took me about six days to free-heel confidently on blues. If you alpine first, you have to 'forget' everything you know. A snowboarder only needs to learn to deal with the extra board. I only tried alpining once, and it feels VERY unnatural.
I desagree with you. I tried telemark one time and i know is more difficult than alpine. But if you have any alpine experience you will progress faster than if it's your first time on the snow.
i completely disagree. you don't need to "forget everything you know" at all. I raced for a few years and was a very strong alpine skier, it took me about 3 days to get the hang of tele, and i wouldn't have been as good as i am now with out alpine.
you dont have to learn alpine before telemark. infact the nature of telemark is that its a combined cross country and riding style, an all round style where you master the mountain in all ways both up and down and on the flat land. norwegian kids learn telemark skiing before anything else its the best base training for balance.
omg this isnt newschool???? ur the gay! have you ever ridden a pair of twintip telemark skis in a high speed switch??? guess not... ive done oldschool telemark! That is though this is even thougher
ya but who has more skill? a good fixed heel skiier or a good free heel. To learn to free heel, you have to know how to ski alpine. So know matter what, any teleskier is technically better than a alpine skier. There are definitely exceptions, like pro athletes but for the most part, this is true.
