How about Chicago who's paying 2 goaltenders over 12 million a season, what about NY Rangers who are paying both Drury and Redden near Gomez numbers (who aren't fit to sharpen Scottie's skates). What about Philly who's paying Daniella Briere 8 million a season for ice capades? @goberge69 Gainey didn't want to trade Halak. Halak asked for a trade because everyone was thinking Price was going to be number 1. Gainey didn't trade Halak because he didn't get an offer that was good enough. Sure Gainey makes mistakes (as all GMs do) but he never blew up the farm for quick fixes. Cammalleri, Gionta, Gomez, Gill and Moen are all Gainey moves that are paying in spades. Don't forget Markov too (Gainey signed over Souray). Or Gorges and Pacman for Rivet, Kovalev for Balej - lol.

Gainey did make bad moves, preferring Price over Halak was one of them. Although I still think Gainey was one of the greatest Habs players, I think his management skills were awful and firing Carbonneau was something out of this world, something he shouldn't have done. I guess it all comes down to a personal opinion on the subject, in the end the franchise is fairing better since his departure.

@mackjeez Yeah I'm sure if you were GM we'd be paying Cristobal Huet 6.5 million to let 6 and half goals in a night. Preferring Price was easy because at that point he was playing better. Carbo was fired because he didn't communicate with players and many were lost + the habs had a dismal second half and - probably - only made the playoffs because Gainey took the helm. Of course he makes mistakes - he's human. That being said he did a hell of a lot right starting with protecting our youth.

That's why a team has at least 2 goalies, its only logical to put in a substitute when your number one is doing bad but in the long run a number 2 is still a number 2, he was expecting a up and coming goalie to deal with the Habs franchise stress, it practically ruined him. Gainey realized his mistake when he let go of Carbonneau, the reality was the team couldn't get along the only outcome should be to disassemble which he did but lost a great coach in the outcome.
